actual full on closing of borders between states of course doesnt make sense. but on a basic level if State A is doing social distancing and State B is not, then State A has a choice of either closing for much longer than they would otherwise need to, causing their economy to suffer, or they institute some kind of control over people coming in from State B that results in tracking and isolating those who have the virus.

Literally.

The issue here is class not politics. It's why poor populations are getting hit harder by this.

Do you care to point out where a democrat said this? Literally

quote:

“It is always the American government’s position to say, in the choice between the loss of our way of life as Americans and the loss of life, of American lives, we have to always choose the latter.... It is policymakers’ decision to put on our big boy and big girl pants and say it is the lesser of these two evils. It is not zero evil, but it is the lesser of these two evils and we intend to move forward that direction.”

Find me a literal quote where a democrat literally said that he'd be willing to have Americans literally die for the economy.

edit: this statement has nothing to do with class. It's to do with all Americans dying for money.

People started dying when I was in high school...a suicide...a car crash...and that was a mindfuck. Certainly the deaths of friends after highschool has also been a mindfuck. However, I can't imagine how I would have felt if one of my friends had died when I was eight.

Does anyone have the lancet paper dr oz is citing? Still not convinced he means 3% of the CHILDREN will die, that makes no sense from what we know about fatality rates in kids, which seem to be extremely low. Not that it makes his attitude any less ghoulish, but it makes more sense that the 2-3% refers to something involving the general population that opening the schools would precipitate, if 2% of kids die then like 10% of the total population dies based on how much less fatal this is in 8 year olds than 80 year olds...

There's no more rush hour, so that's nice. Truck traffic is still busy during the day and for most of the night but car traffic is just gone. Major truck stop chains are still going strong but there's no dining rooms so I have to eat meals in the truck. It's just more relaxing to eat at a booth or table. I feel bad for the truck stop employees because they are still working but now behind plexiglass.

It's eerie driving past outlet malls and restaurant rows and movie theaters and all of the parking lots are empty. And seeing billboards for music and comedy acts at the casinos and knowing that Sinbad show in Vicksburg just isn't happening.

LOTS of construction, but I think that's also because April is the start of the second quarter and the second quarter is warmer so all of the construction projects are scheduled for then. The low traffic means shorter waits and less gridlock at the choke point of the construction zone.

I skipped around the thread so I don't know if talk about the stimulus check is bad, but I got my check and donated it to my local food bank. I'm employed and financially stable so I don't need it. People who lost their jobs because their workplace is closed need the help and food.

https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanchi/article/PIIS2352-4642(20)30105-X/fulltext is the piece i think, with a link to the modelling study. The writer is opining that, given that in the model closing schools reduces OVERALL covid deaths by a couple % (so a country which would have had 100,000 instead has 97,000), it might not be worth the knock on effect on the kids

quote:

They found limited benefit on slowing the spread of the virus, and the authors stress that closures must be considered within the wider context of loss of essential workers due to childcare demands, restrictions in learning, socialising, and physical activity for pupils, and the substantial risks to the most vulnerable children, including those in low-income settings. Following school closures amidst the west African Ebola epidemic, rates of child labour, neglect, sexual abuse, and adolescent pregnancies spiked, and many children never returned to school.
Many children will suffer from a lack of access to school-provided social assistance, such as free lunches or clean water and washing facilities. Those engaged with school-facilitated health care, such as vaccinations and mental health services, may miss out on vital health provisions

I'm not agreeing with dr oz, not in his message or the way he delivered it, but mischaracterising what he actually meant is disingenuous and also poor treatment of the original author who is talking about child wellbeing not Number.

He wants the governors in those states to stop mandating social distancing so economy numbers can look better.

For Virginia he's referring to the super draconian gun control laws the governor tried to shove through right after the state elections. All but a few reasonably sane tidbits of this legislation recently got obliterated in the state legislature due to a near complete lack of support among "people living in Virginia" and it won't be back on the table for another year.

Trump wants economy good because its the only thing he could boast about that wasn't attacked, as even democratic voters liked a good economy.

What he naturally doesn't understand is that nobody gives a gently caress about a good economy (which will not return quickly any way) when they and their family are dying (which they will if he gets his way).

A good (great) economy is the only solid basis trump has (had) so of course he wants to protect it without thinking any step further.
