Kestral posted:Yep, I'm familiar with Cybersyn - fascinating, albeit at least 50 years at least ahead of its time. And those 50 years have done a lot to increase the complexity of the world we live in. There's a real chance that the only form of central planning that "works" (massive scare quotes for "works") is one run mostly by algorithms that base their decision-making on factors that are totally inscrutable to the people who designed them. Not a pleasant thought. I haven't read People's Republic of Wal-Mart yet, but I thought it was skeptical of a modern implementation of Cybersyn? yeah, the book is a little weird, because they list all these interesting and convincing arguments....then totally cop-out in the end by saying its "good in theory" lol but can you imagine how efficient we would be at delivering goods and services if we nationalized walmart and amazon and used their supply chains to our benefit rather then delivering hundreds of boxes of throwback surge and big dog tshirts

nationalized walmart and amazon would own, we could use the survivors of our many wars for cheap labor in our new colonies

USA #1!! https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/us/ There's only 3,045,822 detected cases in the world altogether and you guys are hogging a third of them to yourselves. Also the first detected case in the US was January 20 so you've managed to go from one to one million in only 98 days.

Y'all think they just wave a scanner over you or use drones to detect COVID cases by air? -_-

We get temps starting in the 60's and consider it ti be a fever when it's above 93. Yeah, it's not a proper human body temperature so therefore it's really useless.

Question about viral shedding: are there only so many viral particles that a person can shed in a set period of time, or is it essentially limitless? For example, if someone were to say practice saxophone or opera singing for an hour at home immediately before going to the grocery store, would that person be less infectious than if they hadn't? Or is there functionally no "recharge time" needed to come back to maximum shedding levels?

Today's the first day of a mandated 30 day mask wearing order by Harris County judge.

NihilismNow posted:We (Netherlands) haven't stopped wearing masks because we never started. Government officials still hold the line "Masks don't work for untrained people, they may make things worse". And they've doubled down on it so often it would be a huge loss of face to admit that maybe masks work after all. I've seen less than 10 people wear one since this started. Still, 2 weeks past the peak so maybe they are right masks don't do that much. Similar situation in Belgium. However, the government never said they didn't work, they said they're not very useful for people who aren't sick. And that the mask that are very useful for both, had to be reserved for hospital staff, because there was/is a shortage. But now with the reopening of the stores in a week, they decided to give every Belgian a mask and some spare filters. I have no idea how they're gonna pull this off logistically, and neither do they, it seems. Gonna be interesting. I am happy they had the courage to make it mandatory on public transport. Otherwise you get a lot of people who feel embarrassed to wear one, or idiots who feel the need to start arguments why they don't have to, or whatever. Now it's just everybody, and very few will complain.

Ornamental Dingbat posted:Spain somehow had 22K recoveries yesterday. This doesn't seem like it would necessarily be a surprise. The majority of people that test positive don't end up in the ICU they just go home and feel like poo poo for a couple weeks and beat off and play Fallout 76 and then eventually they feel better but they probably don't all call in and say "hey I'm fine now" or go in for a second test so sooner or later there's going to be big spikes of "recovered" people.
