So I hope I'm not the only person who is constantly confused by at least some of the references in each riff. I figure they're mostly just comments on movies or TV shows I never saw as well as past current events I've forgotten about. Sometimes I'll Google it in hopes of finding out what it means. But one that really mystifies me is in Independence Day at the start of the climax with the counterattack. General guy says don't fire until the package has been delivered and Kevin says "Wait, break off the engagement. We've just learned the old penny in the jar thing IS true." I can't even begin to guess what this is in reference to.

Could be this:quote:You might want to take a second glance at all those pennies you have lying around. According to Little Things, a few World War II era pennies still in circulation are worth around $85,000. Basically https://www.google.com/search?q=old+penny+in+the+jar But, yes, I think being confused by the references is an integral part of MST3K/RiffTrax experience

Another Kickstarter thing, if you backed above $15 you get another gift card for $3.99. You have to go to the Backerkit survey again but it will then apply to your account.

There's an old joke that if you put a penny in a jar every time you have sex in your first year of marriage and then take one out every time you have sex after the first year, you'll die of old age before the jar is empty.

The rifftrax writers skew way younger so theres a lot less "rat patrol: in color" except when its a joke about how they used to say "rat patrol: in color" which is stupidly meta. I feel like basically every film gas a callback to another film, or in the case of any film with a helicopter an extended like 6 or 7 movie cross riffer running joke. Edit: or the inside joke nobody was intended to get about mikes girlfriend stealing a keyboard

Yeah, I do think Sean and Conor (and the others) are the reasons we got stuff like GamerGate references like in The Wizard. I'd say video games references in general but do not underestimate Mike Nelson's love for Super Mario Brothers 3.

How dare the RiffTrax dudes present themselves as knowledgeable about something as arcane as video games. They're obviously fake gamer scum. Because, what, normies don't play video games? What the hell point do you think you have?

They do crack jokes about sports, up to cracking a joke about the fact one of their old standbys went on to win the world series thus ruining their value as the punchline. One of the best jokes in all MST3k is "Les Steckel opens training camp" in Red Zone cuba and thats a deep cut sports joke.

I'd go with Wizard of Oz, and it's one of my favorite Riffs. They also did Casablanca, but that's kindof cheating because they said they wanted to do one of the best movies as a goal, and picked that.

One of the recent riffs I watched had a line of dialog about being "back in town" and the joke was "something something at Dino's bar and grill". I suppose it's not a mega obscure reference and a boomer dad rock fan could come up with it but still, it's a line from a 45 year old song how many people would get it.

might also be an Achewood reference, because that song comes up very prominently in an Achewood strip, that fandom ends up in some weirdly high places at times, and that fandom has never met a joke it couldn't beat to death in record time

Or it's just a reference to a hugely popular song from when some of the riffers were kids that's been played on the radio constantly since then. It was in a Saints Row game for gently caress's sake. Unless

It wasn't my favorite or anything but there were some quite funny moments, IMO. Also how did I totally forget about the part in the end of the movie where Ripley gets down to her undies and has her rear end crack hanging out.... Somehow that doesn't figure into my usual talks about Ripley as a great feminist character. Bill and Kevin blamed it on Ridley Scott's dirty uncle Ernie. Also found this, the worst 26 movies according to Riff fans https://www.rifftrax.com/worst-movies-of-all-time Pretty uninspired list. I know, I know, "somebody did a list on the Internet and I disagree with it." Still, I should check out the Battlefield Earth riff.

The Casabalanca riff is genuinely really good, but it helps that its probably my favorite film. Yambao was legitimately a big deal when it was made and features iirc the only nudity of a legend of hispanic acting ever did in film. Shame the film is very very bad.

The last few riffs I watched were okay but not great. But I adore their Matrix riff. Anaconda, Independence Day and Godzilla '98 were all movies I recall from my childhood so I wanted to see the riff but Matrix was THE movie for me when I was 12-13. i watched the VHS of it so many times. I'm glad the riff is so good. Also the best part of Anaconda was the opening theme with that flute. Goddamn I totally forgot about that. https://youtu.be/kt7RrrDAEfw?t=70
