For anyone who has made one of these, how expensive is the material to print the actual models? I can't really afford to drop $400 on a good 3D printer atm but I'm curious what the cost per mech is. (I also see a lot of awesome designs on that site and just want to theorycraft my bankruptcy)

I haven't printed one of those, but have done a fair bit of 3D resin printing. I would guess the cost per mech is easily less than $10 if you print them hollow. edit: The Elegoo Mars is only $190 from Amazon (but you'll easily spend $400 once you get resin and supplies for curing/cleaning.) Do it!

I outsourced my parts from https://www.reddit.com/r/3Dprintmything/ I also printed my crab in resin, so it was a little bit more expensive. Cost me ~$175 for a resin version of the king crab, which, considering the thing is a foot tall, was decent. Saint Celestine fucked around with this message at 06:10 on Sep 7, 2020 |

Got a little impatient and unmasked the canopy pieces. Also added a tiny gunsight. Probably would've finished the kit this weekend, but the weather made it a little inconvenient.

Vorenus posted:That's quite tempting. How would you compare the building process to a mass-produced scale model? Any downside to having it printed with polystyrene vs resin? The building process was much simpler, given that the number of parts was much lower. There are some pros and cons. This particular model was designed to have all the limbs articulate. However I printed it in resin as to keep everything smoother and retain more detail without the little print lines of plastic. HOWEVER. Resin doesn't flex. Resin is also more expensive. The ball joints that on a plastic model would easily flex a bit and join together do not in resin. I had to sand them a bit, and epoxy it. Resin is also a bit heavier, so I had to pin the arms. I think resin was still the best choice, as theres a lot more detail, most parts are smooth with no print marks. If you want a giant mech model (12" tall), 3d printing is the only way to go, as theres nothing else out there currently.

I've been working on what technically is my second ever scale model (#1 was a snap-together plane when I was a literal child) - a 1/35 T-34 from Tamiya and I've been having a blast. I've built a bunch and painted a few Gunpla kits but this feels entirely different for some reason. Though I think 1/35 scale is a little too beefy for my general tank-building desires and will be weary to build this size again. I picked up some leveling thinner and it's honestly magic. It's the best experience I've ever had airbrushing and it makes me want to airbrush everything I own. I kind of stopped last night after doing just my basecoat because I'm not positive where I want to go from here -- I need to figure out what I'm doing with these dang tracks and painting a bunch of tiny accessories before I get on to decals and weathering and all that fun stuff. I ended up going over the turret a second time, lightly, to dull the preshade a little more after I took the picture.

Vinyl tracks are a terrible curse. What I usually do with them is leave the drive sprocket off, join the tracks with wire (if the tank has skirt armour you can hide the joint there, otherwise under a wheel or something) and slip them both on at the end.

I put it all together, tracks included and just went "well that is going to be a problem" and wanted to hit my head against my table a bunch. I'm sure I'll figure something specific out that doesn't look awful. Even if it does look awful I'll make a diorama or something so the awful looks on purpose!

The Tamiya 1/48 scale are pretty nice for slightly smaller armor, but you may want to go down to 1/72. Which is a pretty rad scale, TBF - you've got a lot of great choices for armor, planes, and people. S-model in particular is pretty hard to beat in terms of quality-to-price for 1/72 tanks and tank-like things.

Looks like I'm doing another one, still on the theme of 'flying things I loved as a kid' though rather far away from Star Wars this time. A Flaptter from Ghiblis 'Castle in the Sky' by Bandai. Some nice details on it I think, going to have to research the colour names to get it right though. I'll probably get started over the weekend, any tips or thoughts on how to approach this will be greatly appreciated.

Isn't Ghibli the one that did the weird Char/T-35 mashup tank with the mouse crew? I keep seeing that around and wanting to "pull the trigger" (AtKSTD) but it's been a long long time since I've done anything other than 40k modeling (and a long time since I've done even that).

I built an Ohm kit (the larvae monsters from Nausicaa) for my brother once, it required quite a lot of spackle. And definitely glue and paint, those are single coloured sprues as in classic model kits, not at all like Gunpla. And the Miyazaki tank mentioned is the OOP AKUYAKU #1, which now goes for up to 100 GBP on ebay. At least I think it's OOP since it's backordered in the first five shops I checked. lilljonas fucked around with this message at 16:18 on Sep 12, 2020 |

Thanks for the links for the colours, I was looking around for ideas on that and saw mention of using Google Lens, it's pretty impressive but pays to check over each part with it as it misses some words. : That looks to be about right, no specific make of paints mentioned so I'll stick to the Valejo ones I have and get any extra colours I need. And yeah this was order through Amazon UK, arriving several weeks later from Japan.
