It took me a long time to drop it, because it seemed like it could be fun and I love that art style. Because of you I checked it out again. Now I'm sad., such wasted potential. No one talking about Roboco being a w...normal house maid robot? And those stupid underwear shots. link Agravity Boys. HB had better not mess with Chocolat du Jambroe. High school family, new series What the hell kind of art style is this? It's like Agravity boys chapter last week where the lead of the show only had one expression, except it's played straight. Why would anyone compare this with Bone Collection. Bone collection was not a good looking series, but that was because the series chose an extremely busy art style and had nightmarish panel composition. This, is just plain ugly.

Like if this chapter is the straw that broke the camel's back, what were you reading in the previous 10? I haven't heard of either of those so I went into Ayakashi with no expectations. Sure, there were some fanservice bits in it, but I thought I could see past it since there were also interesting hooks in it like Matsuri being chill about changing genders and what that might mean, or Suzu being pan and wanting to get together with Matsuri, or Yuzu's friend getting called out for creeping on the other girls and actually changing her ways. It's like it could potentially be good, but the author just can't help but draw the manga with one hand under the table. gimme the GOD drat candy posted:it's amazing that high school family got published. Ayakashi is the ToLoveRu mangaka- whose original series was basically porn back when you could get away with uncensored full-frontal in Weekly Jump, and then he continued it literally as porn outside of Jump. And now he's back, so his new thing being softcore porn is on brand- it looks like he's taking up Yuuna's banner as the fanservice series. Also since he had a previously successful series he'll probably get a longer run than most newbies.

Undead Unluck just had a multi-month timeskip, which is giving me the same kind of rushed editor vibes that Time Paradox manga had too. Kind of a shame but I'm not sure how much longer this series has

it just won a reader survey award last month, i don't think they're getting rid of it that quickly

Considering that the Undead Unluck timeskip was just skipping over what could have been a training arc to get to the action, that reads more to me as pushing on with the plot than rushing anything or grabbing at changes. The plot does set it up so the manga could end at pretty much any time, but that's been part of the whole premise since quests were introduced.

Like other then to watch Fuuko and Chikara train, there was no reason not to skip to the next set of missions.

I'm OK with time skip if we get a couple good issues of "look how sweet our powers are now" then back to the usual madness. I just accept I constantly feel like a series I'm enjoying is in the final arc. Jujutsu? Final arc. Undead Unluck? Final arc. Chainsaw Man? Final arc. I know it's dumb but it makes weekly a slight bit less bad.

To be fair Jump has trained its readership into believing that the series that they love will be canceled at a moments notice to make way for a series made up entirely of what lurks in their Comic Book Room 101 and that will just sit in the anthology for years on end. It's kinda insiduously brilliant but it also makes its readership utterly paranoid (and somtimes a bit spoony, see the people who somehow liked Ghost Plagerist)

I want to believe high school is on some adult swim tilt with how obnoxiously up front it is with its badness and I loving love it. It's the freddy got fingered of the high school trope and every chapter it gets to live on is a miracle and piece of art in itself.

Man I feel like an outlier here, I thought it was immediately funny and I feel like the premise lends itself to a lot of potential comedic moments. I don't mind Bone Collection being replaced with this, that series only felt like it reached it's true potential in the last two chapters.
|
# ? Sep 10, 2020 00:41 |
i do think the art is generally unappealing despite getting the style it's going for. somehow the cat works for me while the dad incredibly does not? comedically i see the potential even with this weak start, so we'll see. not gonna keep my salt over bone collection tied to it.

And that’s ok! It’s really funny to me (and whoever at SJ gave it a green light) and I’m glad shonen jump took the chance on so many comedy series at once. When it gets cancelled I’m sure I’ll whine about the next manga that took its place like you are with boner collector or whatever

I don't think it's bad enough to be intentionally bad. Like, the thing that really stuck out to me about High School Family is that this is the kind of series none of us would have ever heard about if it wasn't for how everything that runs in WSJ gets translated now. There's probably a million other unfunny gag manga that lived and died totally unknown by western audiences. Blockhouse fucked around with this message at 02:44 on Sep 10, 2020 |

In case you don't know what's the deal about High School Family, it's drawn by Nakama Ryou, who also drew Isobe Isobee Monogatari, another absurdist gag manga. It was also successful enough that it ran for 4 years together with Kochikame, so it's not just some fluke, Nakama is a well established author cause his comedy is well liked in Japan.
