fishtobaskets posted:This reads like one nitpicky dude with opinions wrote the entire thing with zero editorial oversight Honestly, this might be one of the better style guides I've seen, because the way it describes things gives each point more ways to stick in your head. It's giving good explanations of why some of the less obvious stances are being taken, gives usable examples, and one of the more understated good points, specifically says when some distinctions don't matter. And, of course, does it in ways that you'll remember. I've written while adhering to style guides, and the more you can memorize those rules, and the less uncertainty there is, the better. I guarantee Defector won't have problems with inconsistently adhering to the style guide.

if the video says "wait for it" and is longer than, say, 35 seconds, I will not be waiting for it.

You want something really brain melting, check this out: https://babelia.libraryofbabel.info/ It's an archive of every possible combination of pixels in a 416x640 image, with 4096 colours. It contains, in some version, depictions of all works of art, from the past, present and future, images of every person or animal who has, is, or will ever live, and every great work of writing, since it will generate images of text as well. You can use a search function to find a picture your already have in the archive, but there's no way to search it otherwise.

There aren't any actual images of the passport but there was one issued. The reason was likely to establish Egyptian citizenship since there were fears that the French would try to keep him. The French also greeted him at the airport with full military honors befitting a king.

Just knock the first part of that URL and you’ll get the text portion, which is what the site originally was. I didn’t even know they had added pictures. Even knowing what it’s up to, it is extremely cool to input any text you can think of, and have it be found in the library. I’ve wasted hours there.

This database contains, for example, the cover art for every album that has ever been released. It also contains the cover art for every album that ever will be released. It has a picture of your social security card, and many, many, many, many pictures of you. Somewhere in this collection, there’s an image that depicts you at the moment of your death. There’s also quite a lot of rainbow colored static, but that’s not much of a revelation.

I like the way it's described in the about page. quote:Borges' story, as well as its online iteration, demonstrate a property of the essence of language. Though it is commonly thought that the meaning of language bears an intrinsic relationship to the conscious, rational intentions of the speaker or writer creating an utterance, the Library of Babel reminds us that language is always possible in the absence of any intention toward signification. In fact, every word we speak or mark we make, even the most intimate and spontaneous, is indistinguishable from its mechanical reiteration. The Babel Image Archives exist to make us mindful of a similar property of the visual world (which is, in its own way, a language). Though we think of the world we perceive through sight as the most fundamental layer of reality, it is itself a representation, subject to the same vicissitudes as language, capable of being dislodged from its motivating context. If we glance at our surroundings, it seems as though the objects before us are immediately present, but anything we see forevermore has been foretold in the library, long before this moment and indifferent to the presence of its contents. Just yeah, a reminder that meaning is a function of our brain, and not intrisict to anything. that's not anything amazing to realize, but it's easy to forget. Every dril tweet was in here long before he thought them up.... Ariong posted:This sort of thing is incredibly fascinating to me. I have wondered whether you could use the search algorythm to find every instance of a face, for example. Could you use a production still to reconstruct a scene from a lost movie? finding every instance of a piece of that still, and then finding all the variants of that, and reconstructing? Obviously you would have a lot of garbage even then, and whether or not it was a correct reconstruction would be impossible to know, but still, it would be cool maybe to set a computer on it and see what sort of things it came up with.
