Also heavily recommend Peter Fehrvari’s work-Fire Caste, Cult of the Spiral Dawn, and Requiem Infernal. All very spooky, deeply psychological mindfucks. I read Fire Caste, got halfway through, went HOLY poo poo and started over with a different understanding, then proceeded to track down all three of his books and a bunch of short stories. As far as I’m concerned he’s top tier.

Horus Heresy 3 by Ben Counter is kinda... bad. It's mediocre and it's frustrating. Like it gets the job done but this isn't a great way to close out the opening trilogy. sigh. Graham McNeill has his faults but he's always a fast-fast-fast read and this one just drags. I'm 40% in.

He's my new favourite. All his poo poo is linked and figuring out new links in books is a great excuse for a reread

Tau don't have many books but most of them are good. Fire Warrior is better than the game its based on. A low bar, sure, but its a decent read about a panicked recruit getting ptsd.

Mike Brooks is great so far. His short story leading into this novel is a really great Ork story so I am optimistic this Ork novel will be good. It's the first full length Ork POV novel. I wish there was a LE edition for it.

I'll be honest and say that I read a short story written in Orkish in some Black Library compilation years ago (something about a Kommando or something?) and, while it was tolerable, I was p.glad that it was just a short story?

Yeah and Brooks goes a bit heavier on it than others too. So if that's something you think will annoy you try the short first.

I liked it but it's one of the reasons I like Haley's Evil Sunz shorts more.

I often forget the sillier things about Astartes physiology, like that they have xenomorph-style acid spit that can be used from everything to digesting grass like a cow to melting a plasteel lock. The only times I've seen an author remember that other than in a codex is in some of the Night Lords books (although apparently the gland has been reduced to a vestigial organ for most marines now?)

They also have a skin pigment that changes color to alert them to harmful levels of radiation. Never seen that used.

I think the Raven Guard's is broken though because they're canonically pale (not albinos though because they have gothy black hair)?

Agreed, a full book written like that would overstay its welcome pretty quickly.

D-Pad

I can't tell you exactly what is different about Brook's ork style writing, but I've always found it intolerable and did not in his short story. It very well may be after 30 pages, but it seemed better in the short story he wrote.

I believe it is Imperial Fists and successors who have lost the use of their Betcher's Gland. I do see it occasionally mentioned. I believe it is Space Wolves who spit on the ground as a kind of gently caress you and if they make it acidic then it is an ultra gently caress you, which I thought was pretty cool. The skin pigment is a defense against radiation. A marine who is exposed has his skin go into overdrive producing melanin. I think that is mutated in both Raven Guard and Salamander's, one having none and the other having too much.

D-Pad

Weird, somebody just posted an excerpt on reddit where the metachromatic organ is actually used. I think I've only seen one or two other mentions before.

I like reading him. He's up and down as Arcsquad12 says, but I can more broadly say that he sucks at characters but REALLY nails writing horror and body horror, he does it like no one else and therefore is best when he's writing chaos.

It's a new re-release of at least two books, and it looks like maybe some new material too. It's well worth getting for the one of those two books which I have read.
