I'll be honest, I always skip the bolter porn in every 40k book I read nowadays because I'm only interested in the speaking parts.

Horus Heresy 3 by Ben Counter is kinda... bad. It's mediocre and it's frustrating. Like it gets the job done but this isn't a great way to close out the opening trilogy. sigh. Graham McNeill has his faults but he's always a fast-fast-fast read and this one just drags. I'm 40% in.

Tau don't have many books but most of them are good. Fire Warrior is better than the game its based on. A low bar, sure, but its a decent read about a panicked recruit getting ptsd.

Mike Brooks is great so far. His short story leading into this novel is a really great Ork story so I am optimistic this Ork novel will be good. It's the first full length Ork POV novel. I wish there was a LE edition for it.

I often forget the sillier things about Astartes physiology, like that they have xenomorph-style acid spit that can be used from everything to digesting grass like a cow to melting a plasteel lock. The only times I've seen an author remember that other than in a codex is in some of the Night Lords books (although apparently the gland has been reduced to a vestigial organ for most marines now?) They also have a skin pigment that changes color to alert them to harmful levels of radiation. Never seen that used.

I can't tell you exactly what is different about Brook's ork style writing, but I've always found it intolerable and did not in his short story. It very well may be after 30 pages, but it seemed better in the short story he wrote. I believe it is Imperial Fists and successors who have lost the use of their Betcher's Gland. I do see it occasionally mentioned. I believe it is Space Wolves who spit on the ground as a kind of gently caress you and if they make it acidic then it is an ultra gently caress you, which I thought was pretty cool. The skin pigment is a defense against radiation. A marine who is exposed has his skin go into overdrive producing melanin. I think that is mutated in both Raven Guard and Salamander's, one having none and the other having too much.

Are there ever kindle deals on 40k books? I miss being young, living at home, having low customs and shipping rates and just buying a bunch of physical books. It's way more expensive now.-

There are occasionally very good bundle deals on websites like Humble Bundle or Fanatical. I wish 40k books were eligible under Kindle Unlimited but alas.

Finished The Great Work ... huh Also Cawl is very extremely very Right on the edge of being 4th wall breaking. He's so aware of what's going on in the universe it almost feels like he's winking at the reader in some places. Which I guess is in character, but doesn't do much for me. Have to read some more post-galaxy fracture books to see how the rest of the NuMarines and RETURN OF THE KING feels.

I saw on the Sunday Preview that next week the Imperial Infantryman’s Handbook will be re released. Is this the first re-release? I can only find extremely expensive versions on ebay so I wonder if it is actually good or if it's just hard to find.
