Just as an FYI, the general critique and discussion thread is the Photo a Day thread.

The specific subject threads are also usually full of discussion about photos as well as some gear chat. Of particular note are the Street thread and the Film thread (if you ever break out the Spotmatic again. I find it odd that you say the cost of B&W developing is what made you move away from film, if you develop at home it's the cheapest way to shoot film that exists. Literally a few cents per roll.

Thanks for the correction.

The rolls themselves were expensive as poo poo at my camera shop, never mind developing them. I have a Canon A-1 and prefer that to the Spotmatic so I'll be using that with film when I come back to it.

I checked videos of film developing and was going to go that route but it seemed the most tedious poo poo ever. I simply don't want to do any of that. I watched some video on how to make a print and it looks so tedious to me and takes forever.

Yeah, people’s feelings toward developing at home seem to be bimodal—either you love it as a fun part of the hobby or you hate it as an annoyance to be worked around (e.g. sending it off to the lab).

Both takes are a-okay.

Had 1213 photos on my SD card. PC told me i was out of disk space when i had copied 1212, so literally 1 photo too many. PC cancelled the whole operation forming me to copy the entire load again.
I love the Canon R6 but the transfer speeds to PC is REALLY slow, literally an hour to unload a 16gb UHS-II card over USB-C to USB3.
So i am going to buy a card reader. I have never really looked into card readers before and am a bit surprised there seems to be few/none with USB3, at least in the store here.
Im good with any random $20 one then, right?

xzzy
Mar 5, 2009

USB 3 readers are pretty common. If it's 3.1 or 3.2 you want with a USB-C connection, yeah, that's a little more rare.

My Anker AR200 is usb 3 and is speedy enough.

But even the shittiest card reader will be faster than transfering photos from a tethered camera. I don't know what interfaces camera makers put on those things but they're always dogshit.

Listen buddy, we all got problems!
Any $20 reader on amazon will do fine. It won't be the fastest speeds but it will certainly be better than what you get through the camera.

I have a cheap Chinese one (uGreen) and it happily churns out pretty close to 5Gbps. You can get better than that but you have to go up market to big memory brands like SanDisk etc who charge far more.

The Canon 5D4 was at least 5 times this speed though, with some sort of weird proprietary cable that looked like 2 mini HDMI side by side. Every camera i've ever had has had much faster transfer speeds than this. Why'd they upgrade to USB-C if they are going to tank the speeds...

Gonna buy a card reader then!

Fallen Rib
Many years ago I got a basic no-name USB card reader for less than zero dollars. When I added it to my cart, the combo special activated on the other thing I was buying (pretty sure that was the intervalometer) and reduced the price of the whole package by more than the stand-alone cost of the card reader (which was like $1.99 or something).

That reader crapped out after about 5 years - the case split and it would no longer grip a SD card in the slot - but the $20 impulse-buy replacement from Best Buy has been chugging along faithfully ever since. My current - and my previous - laptop has a built-in SD card reader but for whatever reason Windows keeps forgetting it exists. I can remind Windows about it by re-installing the USB drivers, but it's easier to simply use the little grey oblong. Even if your camera's tether speed and reliability is good, saving wear-and-tear on sometimes-delicate ports on your camera is something a disposable sub-$20 USB card reader can do quite well.

FWIW, the 5D4 sounds like it had MicroUSB3, not proprietary cable. It basically sticks a second connector alongside the regular microUSB cable. It was never super common, and was thankfully replaced by USB-C, but it was a standard.

I assume you're using a cable that came with the camera? Many USB-C cables are USB 2.0 only, but I'd assume that Canon includes a decent one. Also, confirm that you're plugged in to a USB3 port on your computer. They're typically blue.

I've made a huge mistake.
The official specs of the R6 is that it has a USB3.2 Gen 2 interface (ie up to 10Gbps). I would definitely do some diagnostics to see if something is slowing it down. But I'd still pick up a car reader, camera usbs always seem to relatively underperform.

There is no cable bundled with the Canon R6. I had several USB-C cables at home but none worked with the camera, only when i bought a 10Gbps cable did the camera connect to the PC. The USB port on the PC is blue and according to the motherboard specs a 3.1 port. Can the USB cable be USB 2.0 and 10 Gbps? I don't remember but i am not sure the box for the cable actually said it was USB 3

Any pro tips for onlyfans photoshoots? I've never done them but one model wanted better photos than what she can herself take. Full nude fap material of course. Maybe some semi clothed teasers to incite people to buy/subscribe.

Like what kind of lighting you'd recommend? 2 flashes on either side of bed, maybe 90 degs from each other? With white umbrellas is what I've thought.

I don't actually know what kind of stuff is in onlyfans but that's what came to mind from the porn pictures I've seen. She said she wants none of that artsy crap or generic portraits.

What other locations would work? Generic stuff which comes to mind is shower, kitchen, sofa, tabletop...

Post her account so we can recommend things that fit in with her established aesthetic.

Serious answer:

Treat it like any other editorial style shoot. I've done plenty of boudoir for sex workers and the key takeaway is that this is content that they need to either sell in a lump or tease out (no pun intended) over a several day period. Find out which she plans to do and structure the shoot accordingly. I know she said "no artsy stuff" but if she wants to use images from the same shoot over several content drops y'all will have to establish a narrative and play it out. You know like some clothed ones outside, then some flirty ones on the stairs maybe half undressed, then nude in a third location. That's a generic suggestion, definitely talk to your client to get ideas more in line with what will sell for her.

As far as lighting goes if you plan crank out (no pun intended) a bunch of content in one sitting plan to vary your lighting. Shoot a set with bounced bright ceiling light, shoot some moody beauty dish stuff, do some shadow drenched natural light stuff. As far as locations go an apartment works fine, a cute airbnb or fancy hotel is a great option as well if she has the budget.

Heed my words and become a master of the Heart (of Thorns).
Had my first "professional" photoshoot this weekend, of a family of 4.

For one of the shots i had them all grab a bunch of leaves and throw in the air and i did a burst of photos. None of the photos came out all that great as they weren't particularly coordinated when throwing but the total amount of leaves across all the photos i took would probably look pretty cool.

Is there a blend mode in Photoshop that lets me easily combine "all" the leaves onto 1 photo?

I have done something similar in the past, my wife blew on a dandelion and i combined all the umbrella-seeds onto 1 photo. I did it manually, loading all the photos as layers in photoshop, hiding all but 2 layers then comparing them back and forth to see which seeds did not overlap. Repeat for like 20 photos. The end result looked really cool, with my wife blowing like 800 seeds out of 1 flower, but the process took way too long.
Is there a quicker way to doing this?

xzzy
Mar 5, 2009

Was the camera on a tripod? If so, maybe. Use the "stack mode" feature to see if you can make it work.. it's normally used to take a series of exposures to delete objects that have moved (like people). Maybe it's easy to have it keep stuff that did move?

Ineptitude
Mar 2, 2010

Heed my words and become a master of the Heart (of Thorns).
Not on a tripod, but the whole burst was 20 photos in a second so there is virtually no change in the models between the shots. If doing the process manually then it doesnt matter if there is a slight change between each photo, all the lighting conditions and camera settings are the same so its a matter of finding the best "base photo" and adding the leaves onto that. It doesnt sound like there is a way to automate this process. The blend mode you mention is the one to use to "remove tourists from your scenic photos" isn't it?

xzzy
Mar 5, 2009

Yeah, but the general idea has to be adaptable to your case. Maybe try the auto align feature to get everything square.

Yeah I think you'll have to do this manually, but it doesn't have to be that hard. Auto-align the layers so the background isn't changing per frame, pick your baseline image, stack every other image on top with their layer masks inverted (so nothing shows), then paint the leafless empty spots in your base layer white on a stacked layer's mask. Painting outside the border of a leaf shouldn't matter, since the backgrounds are lined up. Maybe use a soft brush so tiny non-alignments aren't as visible. The tough part will be leaf overlaps, which have precise edges, but you should be able to fill in a lot of empty space before that's an issue. Since these were taken in a burst maybe it'll make sense to skip a few images so the leaf positions change significantly. Hopefully you'll find you don't need all 20 images to make it work.

Having layers that are just the leaves would be the best (no unwanted background overlap when masking them back in), so do that first if possible, maybe with color selections. If you can get something that's ~85% good enough maybe give the isolated leaves a bit of gaussian and motion blur to hide non-perfect edges, then the above technique should work with very minimal headaches or precise masking.

The "automated" way to do this would involve using the difference blend mode to highlight what's changed between two images, and using levels/curves etc to convert that to a pure black/white mask that outlines the shapes of the leaves from both images. Then you could apply that to your stacked image to get a good result for image 1 + 2. Rinse and repeat. If the people truly don't move this would be pretty easy once you nailed down the steps to getting a clean mask, but you'll probably end up with a lot of difference mode noise from them too, which you'd have to clean up manually, or get clever with blurs and such to ignore.

I think painting the masks manually is probably faster.

yeah go for the X-T30, it's almost as much in a smaller and cheaper package. X-T30 should come with its dedicated battery charger but will also work plugged in ala a smartphone via USB-C (I have the X-T20 and it uses an older plug but still works perfectly with an iPhone or iPad power wall wart, makes travel so much easier now).

Fujifilm is good stuff and there are plenty of lenses for this family of cameras at various price points, from "good" ($350-500) all the way to "real photo money" ($1000-plus). So save a bit on the camera itself and shift towards having a second or third lens option.

Best beginner options for lenses are the 18-55 f/2.8-4, or the 23/2, 35/2 or 50/2 prime lenses (non-zoom but wider, super sharp and fast autofocus).

also the X-T3 and X-T30 don't just use USB-C for data, many current cameras can send photos via wifi/Bluetooth to smartphones or tablets. another option to take your wonderfully artsy baby photos and send them to friends easily.

If you’re getting the X-T3 it can take two SD cards, so be sure to get good quality ones. It’s an area where cheaping out can cause problems.

Otherwise really the idea is to take photos and figure out what you need and want from there.

Was running real low on space so i bought a new storage device. Was planning on buying an SSD but prices for M.2 devices have gotten very competitive lately so i ended up with that instead.
I've always had my LR catalog on a SSD but the actual photos on a HDD. LR performance, particularly when opening photos during a culling session, have always been bothersome. Now after moving my photos to the M.2 boy oh boy it is fast.
LR performance has been a contributing factor at times to me not bothering to cull/edit photos for a few days but those days are probably over now.
While LR doesn't move on and open the next photo in a culling session the advertised 35 times faster it is noticeably faster. Particularly the speed when you cull multiple photos quickly. I assume there is some sort of caching feature in LR because if you take a pause for awhile you can cull 5-6 photos quickly then it starts slowing down. With this M.2 drive theres no such slowdown after several photos, i can rapidly cull and not "hit the wall". (I assume there is a wall but i rarely cull more than 15 photos rapidly before pausing to consider more carefully)
