I had no idea KL released a bluray of Deep Star Six last month, I just rectified that. I'm a sucker for deep-sea thriller/horror movies (The Abyss, Sphere, Leviathan, Underwater) so upgrading my DVD was a no-brainer.

No idea if what they have for The Abyss is HD or not though. Edit: I just finished watching DeepStar Six and idk I really enjoyed it. It took itself seriously, had good production value, solid characters, and managed one legit jump at the end. I would watch the hell out of that again. yoohoo fucked around with this message at 04:51 on Nov 12, 2020 |

The Abyss is not in HD on prime, I saw it and got excited for a brief moment until it started playing in 4:3. It does look marginally better than the DVD copy I still have, but not by much.

There’s an open matte print of The Abyss, so that might explain the aspect ratio.

Yeah it was shot in Super 35, which was a thing for a while. Still seems odd that whoever owns it wouldn't be doing quality control.

Elysium 4K announced which means all Blomkamp movies are on UHD, which is great, but now they may release a 4K collection of his movies and I already bought District 9 in a Steelbook. drat. My need for cool art is now conflicting w my love of consolidation. I can’t wait for John Wick 4 so I can get all 4 in a nice Steelbook and gain a little space. Does anyone else have these types of impulses? Part of why I won’t touch some of these Steelbook collections from Best Buy. The Matrix Trilogy? 3 UHD discs, one case. Great! Pairs well w my Matrix Collectuon on Blu-Ray. The 4 Batman movies? A single UHD in an individual Steelbook for each movie. Noooooo thank you. Xenomrph posted:James Cameron of all people didn’t like widescreen? Not for analog 4x3 home video on his Super-35 films. Though, his 4x3 versions would be carefully reframed shot-by-shot to work best for TVs since just taking off the matte would result in frequent bad compositions. The Ultimate Edition DVD of Terminator 2 had a feature on this that showed the raw scan of the full 1.33:1 Super-35 frame, the 4x3 master, and the letterboxed master side-by-side for one scene. It's the same thing with Kubrick - the low resolution nature of analog SD video meant a lot of filmmakers would rather the image take up as much of the screen as possible without losing too much image. Which is why you'd have Vittorio Storaro opt for 2:1 on films he shot. With Blu-ray and UHD, this has become a moot point.

It was a thing for a while is an understatement in the level of "the pope is just a Catholic dude." It is still used today, and a lot of major films were shot using that format. It was especially common for big budget movies with a lot of special effects. It was the adoption of digital that put an end to its dominance.

What HDR versions of film-originated movies do you all like? I haven’t seen that many, but so far Phantom Thread has impressed me the most with its restrained but effective boost and Blade Runner (not 2049) was abysmal—way too bright and washed out. All the richness and mood is lost. It seems like newer movies—whether shot on film or digital—look alright, but older stuff either doesn’t translate well or executives are maybe screaming at the colorist “we gotta use ALLLLLLL the nits!!!”

I had the Back to the Future 30th anniversary steelbook that had all 3 movies in 1 case, but I was okay with getting the Best Buy 35th anniversary set that had 1 steelbook for each movie. I've got the Saw movies in individual DVD cases largely because the special features still haven't been carried over to the bluray releases (except for 'Jigsaw', which I have as a steelbook), and the series isn't one that benefits hugely from a bluray upgrade in my opinion. Likewise, I've got two copies of 'Armageddon' on my shelf - one of the Criterion DVD and one of the generic bluray. I might cannibalize a spare 3-disc case and consolidate that, though. I've also got two copies of Mad Max Fury Road - a really cool steelbook version that I got first, and then the Mad Max High Octane Collection that I got on sale later. I haven't brought myself to try and get rid of the steelbook yet. Meanwhile I've got consolidated collections for the Blade trilogy, Resident Evil series, Underworld series, a consolidated steelbook for the Jurassic Park original trilogy (and while I currently have individual steelbooks for Jurassic World and Fallen Kingdom, I'd probably get a consolidated steelbook for the second trilogy if they make one), the first 4 Terminator movies, slim cases for the Matrix trilogy, and some others I'm forgetting. Edit-- mis-spoke on the Saw movies. The first movie's special features never got carried over, but the others did. Except for Saw III, where the DVD and bluray have totally different special features with no carryover whatsoever - and each version has a shitload of special features, it's kind of nuts; the DVD has 3 audio commentaries, and the bluray has three totally different audio commentaries, and they've each got a ton of featurettes and stuff that the other version doesn't have. Neither are native 4K, if that matters to you. Fury Road was shot in 2K, BR2049 in 3.4K. For the latter, that's better than nearly every other movie originally shot on digital.

Fury Road is actually not great on UHD because some of the digital flames and explosions are kinda blown out and it takes me out of the movie a little bit. For a lot of movies it wouldn't be a big deal but Fury Road has a lot of explosions. Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049 are both flawless.

Oh yeah. The original Blade Runner looks amazing. Film really benefits from the format. So yeah, look for your favorite older movies on the format. I think the Burton Batman pops. I really like the Nolan trilogy. Casino looks great. 2001 looks great. I think Sony and Warner are putting out pretty consistent options. Gremlins looks good. I’m thinking of picking up Die Hard soon. (I know that’s Fox but still)
