My wife and I just started DS9 and it just struck me as ironic that the platonic ideal of a Star Trek show takes place on a stationary starbase.

we rewatched toys for the first time each in what must be at least 20 years and holy moly is that movie longer and stranger than i remember. ll cool j is the standout of the film and robin wright sounds like a different person because i guess im not used to her voice being higher pitched and twangy this movies visuals are both disorienting and starkly abstract and it brings back some of those scissorhands vibes which i like but also found disjointed since they never anchor the film in the greater world outside the factory. like why not show the neighboring town a bit? it would have humanized everyone. as it is they may as well be toys themselves in a tacky tableau highlights include the fact that the whole film is set in the rolling fields of windows xp wallpaper and the battery life joke that for some reason made me burst out laughing

I love gibson’s books but the best parts of them are in how he creates imagery which there’s no way to do well in film when you’re supposed to show and not tell. you’d need a director and production designer who were super careful and detailed with the look it’s weird because the structure of most of his books is very movie-like, in how you have multiple people/groups who weave in and out of one narrative but if you look at that movie and his 2 xfiles episodes his dialog is awful

actually how do you get $30M and keanu reeves, take a very short story about a technical boy who goes lo-tek with a sawed off shotgun and go all oooh this is the matrix ooooh look at the cyber? it's not bad but it could have been an early john wick

this is maybe a weird nitpick but the thing that bothered me most about the chess show is how the main character never really has a coach or even people to practice with except for a couple extremely short periods of time. it's kinda implied she's read a bunch of books on her own off screen, but the show portrays her just as a unique genius who was able to become the best player in the world by pure talent & instinct. you never really get the impression she was studying or trying very hard, and all the players she ended up winning against were also talented & took the game seriously while she just got wasted all the time but it didnt matter because she was naturally so much better than everyone else. she sobered up like 1 day before her world championship match and that was enough to win
