Man, I know it's new nu-metal made from a mix of old and new recordings, but the Static X album that came out a few months ago is really not bad at all. You could have told me it released when they were at their peak and I would have believed you. If anything, I can respect it as a labour of love rather than a cash grab.

Not really an album release, but it's as long as some of the EP releases I post:

Keys of Orthanc covered Caladan Brood's Book of the Fallen and it's very very good. Keys of Orthanc are already an extremely good "epic" atmoblack band and they cover my favorite song by probably the best epic atmoblack band around.

My controversial (100% original do not steal) opinion on Metallica is that all four 80s albums are near-flawless, the black album is merely good; and I long ago stopped caring about anything they did after that.

Yah, but it would be even better as a side project.

Then this century they've released some stuff that ranges from complete WTF to... at best nothing wrong with it but quite superfluous. Eh, whatever.

they're like Dark Tranquillity recruited Devin Townsend for cleans (and they're named after the Be'Lakor song from Stone's Reach, so there's clearly some of that in there)

and it's as good as that sounds if you're into that kind of thing!

I haven't listened to Soilwork since Natural Born Chaos, that EP really came out of left field. Especially the 16 min opener. Trumpet? Piano?

Also digging the Majestic Christmas album, TSO has always been a guilty pleasure and it scratches the same itch.

Honestly, this and The Living Infinite were pretty drat good. I was surprised, especially since they'd fallen into that cookie cutter Melodeath category

The Living Infinite is seriously one of my favorite melodeath releases ever, there's some incredibly loving good songs on there

Soilwork has been surprisingly solid for a melodeath band that is still going after ~25 years. Them and Dark Tranquillity are pretty much unmatched in that regard. DT's album from this year is really good too

Nazzadan
Jun 22, 2016

I'll be the voice of dissent and say I didn't like the new Soilwork very much, however the new DT is VERY good and their hotstreak of quality melodeath over the decades is basically unmatched.
