PS1 had Persona 2, Wild Arms, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Moon. N64 had like 10 RPGs total and none of them are on that level.

Also when it comes to gaming video essayists that haven't been mentioned, I like Futurasound Productions, Clemps, Jeremy Parish and his assorted retrospective series, LGR (he mostly does old tech but sometimes games are part of that), Nitro Rad, Noah Caldwell-Gervais, and Thorhighheels.

If JRPGs are your only driving factor then yes the PS1 was the clear choice, but if you prefer literally any other genre of game and also had more than one friend then I stand firmly by my statement. I guess Playstation also won out on stealth games by virtue of MGS1 being not only extremely good but also the only game you could call a stealth game, but for that reason if you had said "I prefer stealth games" you would have sounded insane at the time.

Mission Impossible for N64 is vastly underrated in my opinion, it had some really fun stealth levels involving disguising yourself and poo poo.

I think the biggest element missing from modern games is mystery and allowing the player to imagine the world a little, the old games had that through their limited art styles letting the imagination fill in the blanks combined with secrets that weren't all sussed out within minutes of a games release.
I think it's less that old classics inspired that feeling while new, even classic games, don't need to and don't. I still get it from time to time though.

It's not even true of all old classics. Compare Sonic 2 to Sonic CD. I love CD, it's fantastic once you get the point, but there's a whole Scott the Woz video about how it's just... Visual gibberish. Whereas like Sonic 2, or Metroid, has a feeling of intent your brain fills in around.

The other thing is that older games, especially fps games, had level design by 1-3 people. The level designers for Doom and Duke are a handful of people. So they had a vision and executed on it, whereas everything now is giant sprawling open world mashed together nonsense. But it's covered in pretty textures and a pretty skybox.

I never liked the N64 because the controller never made sense to me. Still doesn't

PS1 also had Tekken 3 and Castlevania SOTN and Dino Crisis 2 off the top of my head

I actually liked the N64 controller because of my giant ape paws. Modern controllers are too small, though nowadays I don't have enough functioning fingers left to work them anyway. In conclusion, kb + mouse supremacy.

On YouTube I basically have a nonstop feed of Simpsons scenes, Sopranos scenes, Gundam reviews, Transformers reviews, and 40K/AoS battle reports. Oh and I guess a bunch of people talking about socialism.

Tabletop Titans and Play On Tabletop are pretty dope. TTT are playing Gray Knights vs Drukhari right now!

I find it weird how people rave about like, Bioware or Ubisoft or Blizzard or any other studio. A studio at its peak is a unique mix of staff. Once those people are gone, they're not the same even if they're under the same banner. (And often the 'genius' people claim is at the top is a Vince. Chris Roberts is a loving moron for example.)

You can look at it in very clear delineation with id for example; Two Johns Two Carmacks; Wolf, Doom, Quake. One John Two Carmack; Doom 3. One John One Carmack; Raaaaaaaaaaage. 0 John 0 Carmack; a hero emerges named Marty who narrowly avoids making a Call of Duty games with demons called Doom 4.

Pat on Castle Super Beast has never been more wrong than when he said Rare was trash that only ever made 2 good games - GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. Woolie called him out on it saying it was the wrongest most crazy thing he's said this year with like a power gap.

Saw Anna and the Apocalypse. Had a lot of fun with it until the second half where the zombie apocalypse premise was played very straight and the musical conceit didn't work anymore.

Any other horror musicals that's light on the horror out there?

I really don't like horror musicals or musicals in general but I liked Bang Bang Baby a lot. Repo The Genetic Opera seems to be well received, but I don't know if I hate it because it's bad or because it's a musical.

I think its fair to criticize them with respect to how their games have aged. The FPSes with performance problems and aiming (ESPECIALLY jet force gemini). The platformers mostly suffering from outdated design (the fuckin note resetting in kazooie, the overall level designs of tooie kind of falling out, everything about dk64). Diddy Kong Racing is fine mostly because cart racers died pretty quickly after, but i think its story mode is pretty repetitive and bare bones upon revisit. And I think it's fair to not really be... into... conker's humour.

But they were absolutely ruling that system at the time and people have fond memories for a reason.

I just happened to be a kid that liked RPGs and was enamored with Spyro after one of those demo discs. Only n64 games I owned were smash, pokemon stadium, the pikachu mic game, and all timer Paper Mario as mentioned. Wanted pokemon snap real bad though.

RGB is the highest quality analog video output and the N64 doesn't support it without modding. It doesn't really make the graphics much better anyway because the N64 has hardware anti-aliasing and an additional blur filter for some reason, but you can remove both on a modded console and it'll look nice and sharp.

I decided to take this opportunity to deep dive into Rare's design history and while I can say this is wrong I can also say that their legend is probably a little overblown. A lot of their games seem to fall into the 'flawed gem' category. Stuff like Marble Madness, The Wizards and Warriors series and the Battletoads series (if your game is so hard 90% of the people who play it don't get past the 3rd level you made something pretty flawed) and stuff that didn't really pass the test of time Like Conker's Bad Fur day and Killer Instinct. (Though if you wanted to tell me that Killer Instinct is better than Mortal Kombat I might not agree but I'd listen).

And they made Donkey Kong 64, a game so jank that a marathon charity stream of it managed to get Chuck Tingle and Alexia Occassio-Cortez to make an appearance.

They also did a few of the earliest WWF games on NES/Game Boy

Eh, I don't think you can call Battletoads flawed for that reason because it was an intentional design decision. If you set out to make a game most people can't beat than battletoads is a very good job at that.
