We all hoped it would be a surprise success because the studio pitched it as counter-programming to Star Wars. The idea was you couldn't bring you grandma on Christmas to see Star Wars, so all the families would go see Cats.

In the broadest sense counter-programing can work even with something as broad as Star Wars, but... well.

For what it's worth, during the last holiday season I was very surprised to find CATS to be far more enjoyable and memorable than Rise of Skywalker. Mission accomplished

I like Star Wars, but I just watched a lovely bootleg of Episode 9 and decided that was good enough. I saw Cats opening weekend in the theater.

Also 20 years from now I better get a twee indie movie about the making of Cats. Like it's a romantic comedy about a VFX artist and there's a tiny CGI Idris Elba that only he can see giving him advice.

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

Anyone here watch secret Cats sequel WW84? I didn't feel like it caught the same uncanny nature of the original film, and she unfortunately didn't get cat ears, but otherwise the character would have fit right in.

I re watched this for the first time on christmas and the funniest part to me is still when judy denche turns to the camera and reminds you about all the cats you just saw.

also wondering if anyone made a "(whispers to my date) that's skimbleshanks" joke yet?

Do you find something comical about my appearance when I'm driving my automobile?
Yeah, that ending doesn't work because at no point does any other cat address the audience, and then all the sudden the cats are singing this song at us?

Start it at 10:51:11 and Skimbleshanks should rocket into the sky at midnight.

Edit: start six seconds earlier if you want him to explode into dust.

I've listened to the soundtrack so much that every time I actually watch the movie I forget how often they reprise the main theme instead of having another song. Also I wish the soundtrack had the naming of cats on it, I like that song.

I think there wasn't a lot of disagreement that Macavity and Skimbleshanks are the two actually good songs.

Mr Mistoffolees makes sense in context of the narrative, laughable as it is, though really not on its own.

Hearing the orchestra describe how they have to deliberately play everything off-tempo because Tom Hooper wanted the actors to ~follow their hearts~ instead of following basic loving meter: :stonklol:

It really does take an hour to explain how insanely stupid Hooper's methods were. Expecting the orchestra to predict and keep up with actors who could choose the flow and pacing of songs on the fly during takes. Without proper rehearsals. It's like that Simpsons joke about how making Itchy & Scratchy live is a terrible strain on the animator's wrists.

Grizabella song just finished. Her nose may be full of snot but I agree that she was already the protagonist before Victoria

Ughhh I forgot the child mice singing

And the rum tum foot scene

And all the added lines

And how every single face is freakish

And how even though the singers don't match their timing with each other, the movements of the 3D dancer skeletons are creepily EXACTLY in sync

This is a psychedelic experience the second time too
