Anyone seen my ball joints?
My friend keeps pinging me all these crypto articles and how much buttcoin is up recently trying to get me into it, because he knows I day trade a bit on the side.

The only reason he was invested in btc was that he picked up a few hundred dollars worth at some point some point around 2-3 years ago, he was selling a graphics card on kijiji [Canadian craigslist] to some college student out of town (at a Tim Hortons coffee shop no less). Apparently the guy fat fingered the decimal point on the transaction and what should have been $200 dollars worth of btc was actually 20,000 dollars worth of btc.

Whoops. Neither of them noticed right away. My friend made no effort to track down the guy of course and played finders keepers, I guess Kijiji uses some message anonymizer like craigslist...

So yeah, I'm not taking any financial advice from this guy and his parade of lame-o Canadian penny stock investments that are suggested by his room mate. He tells me btc is great for free foreign transactions.. and I'm like dude.. all my brokerage accounts I get free international bank wires, and unlike buttcoin if I fat fingered a wrong wire transfer by a decimal place, I can pick up a phone and get the wire held and money reversed.

[I do risky enough trading with naked options trading but I stick with large US companies with high liquidity, and always cash out once I reach a certain profit threshold and save a portion for taxes].

I think I got $5 in dogecoin because of the meme/t-shirt thing from a few years ago that I got, but other than that, there's zero chance I'm touching btc... I keep telling my friend to cash out a chunck of his btc and drop it into ETF's or stocks in a big tech company but eh.. I guess I'll watch what happens.

I just checked and wow, the price is comically high. Surprisingly so, really. You'd think people would be selling like crazy to get out while the getting is good and take advantage of the next round of dumbos. But nope, demand to buy is higher than to sell. At some point the price will start to drop for some reason and it will hit a threshold and people will start selling like mad. It will probably drop 10-15k in a day.

The tax issue that made the last crash a mega lol was a lot of bitcoiners discovering how capital gains works. A lot of Bitcoiners treated their crypto money as play money until they cashed out to USD. So in December when all cryptocurrency was up they were swapping their bitcoiners for litecoins and litecoins for tether and tether for random shitcoins to try and chase gains, and then the market crashed in January. To a lot of them it was like that the old joke about a guy who goes out to a casino with $50, finds himself up $10,000, and loses it all. He goes back to his hotel room, his wife asks how it went, and he says he lost $50. So they had been up a lot, but it's fine! Except that's not how it works. When they swapped Bitcoin for Tether or other shitcoins they realized their gains in 2017, exactly as if they had cashed out to USD, and now they owed the IRS short term capital gains taxes on assets that had lost over 80% of their value.

So, when everything from the Tether printer evaporates the valuation of Buttoins will plummet, right? I'm okay-versed in real economics, but less-so in the fantasy economics of the stock market and even less-so in the scam economics of crypto.

It's a psychological thing at this point. Bitcoin has always been a stupidity based market but because the price is higher people now think it's worth that. So even if you wiped out every tether dollar in existence you'd still have an unknown amount of well-off nerds with disposable income that want to buy the dip because Bitcoin has now proven itself to be $30,000+

It's the same way the price didn't completely crash after MtGox inflated it from <$100 to $1000 with market manipulation. They all just went "Well poo poo, it's worth $1000 now.

I'm not even sure you can ever reverse the damage the fake billions of buy orders did. The price might plummet some if tether itself is taken out, but you can't reverse years and years of transactions that have gone into supporting the current price. If Bitfinex can't cover it's order book when tether goes down then that just screws over everyone who has coins there. It might hurt the "legitimacy" but you'll never convince the true believers it's ever bad.

I buy feet pics🍆

The price is supported only because the volume of BTC/Tether inflates it. Demand exists because there's always a bunch of people able to throw more Tether at it, and the order books are notoriously thin and volatile. Greed is one thing, but when you yank away the price peg that's been driving up the price inexorably to show how much "organic" growth there is, I suspect it'll show that the demand really isn't there. Worse yet, the people mining have to sell bitcoin for actual, real money that can be used to pay for actual goods and services (you know, dirty fiat) and that's a huge sell side that cannot be avoided. At the end of the day, the economy bleeds cash because there's no economy; there's no endogenous economic activity that sustains it. Every dollar in is a dollar that has to be gotten from another bagholder, there are no revenues generated from the activity of mining except for whatever price a bitcoin can sell for to another rube.

So when the price of bitcoin is "proved" to be because Bob, Bill, Brent, and Ben are all bidding for it, but oops, only Bob exists and the rest are just trading IOUs with no actual value, and also the other IOUs in circulation that Charlie and Chen are using to bid up that price turns out to be less valuable than Monopoly money and billions of "wealth" disappear...then we'll see some real fireworks. But when that will happen is sort of a fool's guess at this point. There are strong vested interests in pretending Tether isn't the most obvious scam in financial history.
