You posted https://imgur.com/kvfpIE1 which is just Imgur's gallery page for that photo. When I quoted you, I edited it to https://i.imgur.com/kvfpIE1.jpg

On a computer, simply right-click on the photo, choose Copy Image Address, and paste that into your post - use Ctrl+V to paste and you'll automatically get [img] and [/img] tags around it. If the photo's huge you can change these to [timg] and [/timg] to make it a thumbnail.

Imgur makes it near impossible to do on mobile. The Awful app I believe has a way to do it but I can't quite remember.

Imgur mobile app, if you tap into an image (so it's the only one), long press, and "copy URL" it gives you the direct image URL. Awful then lets you automatically add it as a timg tag. Just did it in another thread.

I think that poster may be implying that in cities like NY you have enough people rich enough where pied-a-terres are actually a thing, like oh yes I live in the hamptons, but I like to have a second home in the city because I have a bazillion dollars

On their "professionals site" Louis Poulsen actually has these cool diagrams for their lighting, which are really helpful, though I don't understand parts of them. My understanding is that for the polar one, you have the light source at the black square pointing "downward," so you can get an idea of the spread of the light in the oval pattern. I assume the 80/160/240/320/400 is supposed to be distance? If that was in cm that would make sense, 80 cm ~ 31 inches.

I'm guessing the second image is the same idea, just on a different measurement system - I could imagine this as the lamp pointing straight downward. I have no idea what the hell the third image is.

I like the idea of these, because buying lighting is annoying since you can't really test it out in your living area first, and if it doesn't work you have to pay a bit to return it.

How does a Victorian with city "Landmark" preservation status get turned into a dumb escape house place? And how much would it cost to get the place turned back into something decent?

Yeah, but it's a thing in nyc because a lot of the available apartments are co-ops and most of them specifically don't allow you to use it that way, it has to be the primary residence. So "allows pied-a-terre use" has a specific meaning and usually is worth a price premium. I assume it's just realtor mumbo jumbo anywhere else, no?

but the best part is the (turned off) pump room in the "basement", look how loving cool this is!

it's on 1.5 acres in the middle of downtown Fredericksburg, is adjacent to a park with a boat ramp and two blocks from the VRE station...but I imagine the lower part floods a lot and $1.3 million is asking a bit too much

Potential flooding sucks and the price is high, but it's kinda cool in a way.

The only mistake here is not going hard on the Victorian theming in every room. Why would you not make it a Sherlock/Agatha Christie mystery house? Total lack of imagination on the owners' part; no wonder the escape business failed.

Yeah. I have no idea why you'd try to run an escape room business out of a national historic register victorian house unless you're going to lean hard into that, otherwise a strip mall box that's a blank slate and you can rearrange with quick stick built walls would be vastly better.

The Zillow search term of the day is "A. Hays Town"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._Hays_Town

quote:

Town’s earlier homes borrowed from American colonial architecture and Georgian architecture influences. As his career progressed he began developing his own style influenced heavily by Spanish and French architecture. Interior courtyards and fountains reflect the Spanish tradition, while raised exterior stairs and French doors reflect the Creole influence of New Orleans. Town also took the climate of southern Louisiana into account while designing his homes, using large roof overhangs, an abundance of breezeways, and cross ventilation to provide air circulation.

Town's involvement in the selection of interior materials, colors, and even furnishings was extensive—sometimes going as far as to include the recommendation of a certain type of dog to accent the house. Town was one of the first architects to salvage old building materials and incorporate them into new houses, giving his homes a comfortable, elegant feel. He would often scrounge abandoned warehouses and rice mills for floorboards, fireplace mantels, or flagstones, handpicking the individual elements that would eventually be incorporated into his architecture.
Town lived to be 101 years old and designed buildings from the 1920s all the way to the 2000s, which is insane to me.

Crappy construction thread has dug into that a few times. Natural building techniques tend to be advertised as the "cheaper" and easy-to-DIY option when in reality if they aren't done correctly and in an appropriate climate they can be prone to mold, poor indoor air quality, structural weakness, etc. A thread specifically for them would be very welcome though because when done well they are really neat.

Curious if anyone can identify the era and 'style' name of this lamp? Something i got from my grandpa who passed in the 90s (~70) and it was always at his house when was there in the early 80s. I'm sure it's older than that, but just trying to identify what this would be called and when.

Pic of bottom included because it's rusty and perhaps cast iron or something if that helps. My guess is 50s or 60s?

I've always just called it my "grandpa lamp". Bulbs in it modern of course:

Id guess later 60s? It's got kind of an mod shape in the body, but the shades are verging on some Victorian revival poo poo. The transition from the atomic modernism of the 50s' to the vintage 70s involved a lot of staple midcentury mod lamps getting weirdly ornate shades.
