Goons being just the right amount of smart to know about bitcoin way in advance and still make no money on it is hilarious.

A bit dumber and they could've been true believers in the "currency of the future".

A bit smarter and they could've have taken their smug assessment that "this dumb thing is only useful to drug dealers and money launderers :chord:" and realized thats two groups with $$MONEY$$

I'm "goons" btw.

it was MTGOX and eventually dropped the magic card part entirely and renamed themselves as Mt. Gox

also before that they didn't even deal with physical cards - it was e-cards for magic online lol

there’s a guy who bought a bitcoin specific cold storage hard drive that encrypts itself after 10 failed password attempts. so far he’s tried, and failed, 8 times to get access to the bitcoins. I think there’s a couple hundred milli on there

yeah I don't feel bad about my mining efforts from 2009 because like people already said, even if you were visited by a time traveler who told you to hodl you'd still have multiple chances of losing it all just by making seemingly correct financial decisions

the thing is, are BTC actually being used as a medium of regular exchange?

it seems like 99% of the BTC traffic is people buying it up to hoard it, swapping with other crytos, or trying to buy illegal poo poo.

I think Tesla was already told they can buy BTC if they want but it won't count as $$$ for the purposes of reporting financial reserves so they'll need the BTC equivalent of actual currency as well.

the increase in the price in the last 5 years or so is 100% because of security speculation. most of the people/funds who own crypto have no intention of using it as a currency, they're buying it because number go up

the vast majority of retailers who “accept” bitcoin actually just accept USD from a third party you send the bitcoin to

I find this hard to believe cause when Bitcoin was at $100 selling ten thousand of them would have absolutely tanked the market, and there wouldn’t have been enough buyers anyway

YOUNG GOPERS: ‘O,’ THE PAIN!
By Amber Sutherland

The Grand Old Party is over for New York’s young Republicans, who spent last night crying in their vintage cognac as they mourned the end of the Bush era and quaked in fear over the prospect of an Obama presidency.

“I have no idea what’s to come,” said Amy Noakes, 26, as she and about 100 other conservatives commiserated at Ice Bar in Murray Hill. “It’s going to be more like socialism than capitalism.”

Noakes and her fellow GOPers talked of a political apocalypse at the penultimate New York Young Republican’s Club meeting to be held before Barack Obama’s inauguration on Jan. 20.

“I’m trying to savor the last days of capitalism,” said Cathy Reno, 23, as she bitterly sipped a three-olive martini. “I fear Obama’s inexperience, and that we have no idea what his worldview is.”

“I’m hiding all my guns where Barry can’t find them,” added Villamor Asuncion, 26, referring to Obama’s old nickname in high school.

Grad student Michael Pocelinko, 22, agreed.

“I’m buying as many guns as possible, and I’m enjoying the last days of national security while I can.”

Others worried about the fate of their money in the hands of a man they see as the lowest of the low – a tax-and-spend liberal.

“I’m divesting all equity before the capital-gains tax goes up,” said Jeff Miller, 25.

Miller anticipated a return to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s big-government polices of the last Depression.

“I fear a repeat of the bad tax effects of the New Deal and a gross overreaction to the current economic issues,” he said. “I fear overinflating wages and prices. It would lead to a huge unemployment boom.”

Some tried to keep a stiff upper lip, claiming that they really didn’t care that their candidate lost and that eight years of Republican rule was coming to an end.

“I could give two s- – – s about the inauguration. I could care less,” said Allie Nigolian, 25. “I don’t get Obama; I don’t buy it. People are gonna realize that he’s full of s- – -.”

yeah to sell bitcoin you need to have people queueing up to buy the equivalent amount right then. this is why hodlers keep evangelizing so hard, without a steady stream of buyers it really is just a number on a server. perhaps the same could be said of all religions
