Hooo boy. That's actually awesome. So does this count as a contained failure, even though the shroud could have smashed a family? Because perhaps the "contained" quality isn't all it's cracked up to be.

I thought all of the United 777s had GE90s, but N772UA seems to have the PW4077. It's line number 5, a very early production 777 from 1994.

In true supervisor fashion I'm just picturing the days of paperwork that would have involved if it happened in my area. I'm glad no one got hurt and also that it didn't hit my place.

Since they were relatively low and over an urban area I presume they couldn't dump fuel? If so would that 777 been pretty overweight considering they were flying to HNL?

Well it's utterly nailing the aesthetics of "engine failure".

you can land a plane over weight once in a while, it just can’t do it day in and day out and requires some extra maintenance inspections

And over stressing the landing gear isn't going to be a big conversation given the circumstances.

I wonder how much over MLW a 777 on DEN-HNL would actually be. Presumably a little bit, but I doubt they were anywhere near MTOW given the capabilities of the 777.

People are loving stupid.

I work with a union committee that mediates disputes between pilots, and I dealt with at least a dozen emails during the height of the pandemic where pilots with high-risk spouses/kids/parents were wondering if there's a way to pull someone off a trip because said person has tons of social media posts making it clear that they were totally ignoring common sense about masks, gathering size, and social distancing.

Probably the most entertaining one was when we had a class of about 25 new flight attendants all graduate from ground school, and immediately get quarantined because they all went out to celebrate, and one of them got the 'rona.
