Elven Names posted:

Elves rarely have names resembling the patterns of other races. Instead of a last name or family name, Elves append their clan names. For instance, in Mithrun's case, his full name would be Mithrun of the House of Kerensil. The reason Thistle's full name is "unknown" is due to having been seperated from his family at a young age and no longer remembering his original clan name.

Seems Marcille was raised outside the Western Kingdom of the Elves, but her mom is from there. She might have taken her tallman dad's name.

P. sure the story would involve a magnifying glass and wouldn't be very interesting unless you really want to pontificate on the ramifications of the formative years of morality inherent in pretty much all races

A user of Summoning magic, Fleki's raven-like familiar also enables contact between Mithrun and the rest of the team. An excitable, foul-mouthed drug addict. Out of the Canaries' convicts, Fleki is probably the least interested in magic itself, and only got involved in Ancient Magic to make money.

So she went out trying to cop a buzz off that walking mushroom, right?

This honestly kicks rear end, when you're just a hustler that fucks up and catches a hell sentence in elf jail, what else are you gonna do but hang out with your fellow rejects and burnouts, and put your brain in a bird and trip balls?

That's a lot bleaker than I expected. Also doesn't inspire confidence in the Canaries as an organization that one of their conscripted members can just spend all of her allowance to fund her drug addiction and nobody does anything about it.

It feels like a suicide squad kind of organization. If they live they get to help out the government and if they die at any point it's just one less person on the ledger.

Their bios lean towards this impression. There's not a lot of friction between the members in the main story, which might be why their rough edges aren't all on display, but the convicts at least are, to varying extents, broken, twisted, or chasing their vices. Some might be a little more culpable than others :v:

Having woven Ancient Magic into his own body, he can now transform himself into a beast-form. In essence, he has become something similar to a werewolf. For a time, he lived among a community of like-minded people who all had similar abilities.
He has a feminine appearance and a soft demeanor, but is a red-blooded male through and through. Typically exposes most of his body, leaving him close to naked.

The Canaries are kind of a happy ending for Lycion, since he made friends and he gets to show off his wolf body. Kui had better let him do something cool before the end of the manga. But maybe keep him away from Laius.

Now I'm wondering how he would react to Liaos's attention and interest. I have a feeling that we'll see them share a scene before the manga ends; when one of the protagonists is a man obsessed with monsters, has more than once expressed an interest in becoming a monster, and was really, really curious about the human-monster hybrid that joined the party, adding in a character who can turn into a monster at will and having him be part of a group that's pursuing the main characters really doesn't seem like an accident.

The question is whether Lycion will be appreciative, annoyed, or disturbed by what ensues after they meet.

Their sentences are also ridiculously long. Fleki, an adult elf at the age of 130, got a sentence of almost two and a half centuries for the crime of smuggling forbidden artifacts.

The whole general vibe is that elves who end up in the Canaries aren't expected or intended to serve their time and reintegrate with society and are just kind of expected to burn out and die.

Actually something that's bothered me is that the Canaries have a "first death" listing and I thought it was unique to the island dungeon the story takes place in. Because you'd need to bind the soul to the body and the only time we've seen that happen outside the dungeon was the flashback to Farlyn and Laios' childhood and the bloke that wore a ring he found from the dungeon before he passed away.

Although I guess these deaths could have been resolved with the equivalent of a magical defibrillator and healing magic to patch up the wounds. Something far more immediate in timing.

It's unique to dungeons in general. Dungeons are known for making death less likely to stick.

The Curse of Immortality is automatically laid upon anyone who enters the Dungeon, and lifted when they leave. When a living humanoid being sustains fatal trauma under the effect of the Curse, their body expires but their soul remains bound to their body. The Island is not the only dungeon where the curse is present - most dungeons that attract adventurers in numbers possess the same effect.

That's really odd because the story seems to substantiate that it's an exclusively elvish property to have immortality in a dungeon. The ring from the red dragon flashback was gold and bought from and elf and Thistle's whole deal is using an immortality spell to keep the souls of the citizens bound to the kingdom. Oh well
