i imagine this is a story-beat for a little later in the tale. oda seems to want to really hammer home the "none of us individually are enough, but together we're the best" in this arc, so i figure that final step of "lets blow away the things that have held me back so far" will come when the story is at its peak overall (probs against bb or one of the wg teams)

I'll be honest I don't think Oda will ever have sanji break his code, because a huge aspect of the strawhat characterization is that they persevere in the face of opposition and don't change who they fundamentally are. I'd like to be pleasantly surprised, but I don't see it as being very likeky.

Finding a way to reliably defeat women without hurting them seems like a legit way to get past his issues, though.

I know it wasn't the point but I'm choosing to take this chapter as making GBS threads on Sanji further. Now he's going up against an injured Jack who was already beaten, while Zoro is just playing with the big boys. How far has Sanji(deserving) fallen.

If Sanji is in fact fighting Jack, then he's beating a guy who could fight an entire country full of natural born warriors who fought him to a standstill for nearly a week. That guy is nothing to sneeze at.

Sanji screaming at the top of his lungs had the bonus side effect of very loudly broadcasting through every single responder symbol. If he chose to stay silent its likely Usopp and Yamato (& probably the others, hiyori in the storeroom's probably notable even if we dont see it here) wouldn't have noticed them, which feels it'll probably be a little relevant down the line.

That's what I was hoping for right here and now, but if it happens later on then that would be cool.

now that the chapters officially out: holy wow I can’t wait for the anime to get to this part so someone can inevitably make an edit with Pledge of Demon playing.

Also Robin has her old brick nose back (unless I’m just dumb and she’s had it for a while), 2021 is truly coming up Nico Robin.

He already has, with Violet and Pudding. Even some of Black Maria's cronies were starting to be swayed.

Sanji will never kick a lady, it is bananas to think that.

Also Sanji/Jack is a matchup I've wanted since the Zou arc and it's weird to see it treated as some demotion of Sanji.

I'd actually like to see a fight with Sanji (and say Pudding or Robin or someone) with him actually playing support to fight a woman such that he launching his partner with his kicks or getting them into the air while his female partner actually does the "fight a woman" part.

Sanji did find a way to beat a woman in a fight.

He asked his good friend Nico Robin to come beat Maria up for her.

I mean, I was thinking more like some kind of highly specialised Conqueror's Haki, or some esoteric 'harmless' martial arts poo poo, or some combination of the above. Sanji doesn't have to be Zoro, but being able to deal with every opponent without breaking his moral code seems like a key requirement for the level he's playing at.

It's not a requirement if he has a crew backing him up that will help him when he needs it. Nobody has to be able to deal with every opponent, that's kind of the point of this chapter!

This sounds pretty good to me??? I don't like Zoro THAT much but no more putting up with the dumb perverted jokes which has became the majority of what Sanji is since the timeskip????

His stuff with Pudding was pretty good but now he's back to lusting after women in general.

Whole Cake Island was the best post-timeskip arc and it was the Sanji arc so I guess Sanji is still cool.

His highly specialized form of conqueror's haki is also known as "charisma" and he used it on Black Maria's underlings.

Oh yeah to be clear, I'm not one of the people calling for Sanji to kick women, that's pretty hosed up. Giving him some credit here in this chapter, he found a way to deal with Black Maria. I just can't stand Sanji lately.

Fishman Island was an absolute low point that definitely soured him for a bit, but he's had a bunch of cool moments since. Winning over Violet, airwalking to defend the others from Doflamingo, all of Zou, all of Whole Cake Island, fighting a dinosaur in his raid suit... He's always bounced between doing really cool poo poo and tediously fawning over women; it's wearing even thinner than usual because Pudding gave us a glimpse of what we could have had instead, but it's the same Sanji he always was. Plus his fighting style remains absolutely cool as poo poo.

This is important to me since Oda's weird martial arts are my favourite stuff.

Hell, I like Sabo despite agreeing with basically all of the criticism against him just because I think the Dragon Claws stuff is cool as gently caress.

I'm not making a fucking QCS thread for this but seriously can we take a harder stance on Kiwifarms freaks like this guy, Jesus Christ seriously, you used to be better at knocking these creeps down. I guess ADTRW mods aren't responsible like GBS mods are.
I don't mind Sanji but his early roles in the crew are being out-classed now. He used to be the sneaky, level-headed one who would get stuff done behind the scenes (Which Usopp, Brooke and Robin have taken over). The rest of the crew have caught up to him in terms of strength now and some of them are even developing Haki (Like Usopp). Carrot, Jinbei, and Law have been around for almost a decade now, if Carrot had Armament Haki she'd probably be just as strong as Sanji is and I'm pretty confident that Jinbei and Law are both a lot stronger.

Sanji's just become an A-String gag character and all these secret recipes that he supposedly learned that people speculated would boost the crew haven't actually come into play yet. Even his Raid Call has just been used as a gag. I think people are just hanging on to the Monster Trio moniker, Sanji has a few standout moments against some stronger opponents like Virgo and Doffy but both of those moments involved him just stalling for someone stronger to take over.

For raw strength you need Luffy, Sanji or Franky. Sanji is more of a glass cannon, but makes up for it with speed.

I guess Robin has some serious punching power now; we might even get to see it!

I feel like handing over the reins to Robin was the opposite of Sanji being a lame pervert or chauvinist. It was a drat good character moment for both of them and cool as hell that Sanji can trust a woman to fight for him. I've always appreciated Sanji's ability to shine in a support role and I feel like lately he's been showing a lot of good and laudable traits lately, despite his rough start at the beginning of the New World era.
