I literally exclaimed out loud, "holy poo poo!!!"

I guess these two books is where abnett hid all his recent good writing.

I thought the same thing. I think the existence of custodes besides Constantin implies there is a connection to current palace custodes because as far as I know Constantin disappeared by himself. Maybe they aren't all involved but I would guess Trajann at least has to know and be supporting Constantin behind the scenes by sending him some golden boys. It would not surprise me at all if this is the custodes homegrown plan to resurrect/heal the emperor. Maybe the captain-generals always knew what happened to Constantin despite the belief he just disappeared. It makes sense the first thing post heresy Constantin would do would be to try and save emps. We may find out in the last siege book that emps whispered in more than just Dorm's ear and set Constantin on this path. We know emps knew about Enuncia so he might have told him to seek it out and use it to heal him.

So almost all the really great books and trilogies have short stories the author's have written related to the main story. I would search those out. Stuff like Black Legion, Night Lords, etc all have companion shorts.

I remember The Headstone and the Hammerstone Kings being a good short story. Haven't read it in a while though.

Oh I completely forgot. The Horusian Wars book Divination is a short story anthology by John French. Each story is about one of the inquisitor's retinue members from the main book. It's the best short story collection BL has put out IMO. You don't have to have read the main two books as all the stories are mostly unrelated to the main story except for featuring those characters. That being said you'll appreciate it more if you have read the first two books. I highly recommend it if you are looking for good shorts.

I assume this isn't a "lesser known" short but Unmarked is really good (although I really love me some Persson) and I especially love the implication that he was on the Iraqi side at 73 Easting.

After seeing so many good reviews I want to give Penitent a try. It’s been years since I’ve read a 40k book, and even longer since I read Pariah. Should I re-read it before jumping into Penitent?

The Sabbat World's anthologies (Sabbat Worlds and Sabbat Crusade I believe) have some excellent stories in. I particularly like Arnogaur, it's an ADB short about a World Eater member of the Blood Pact who's role is to hunt down traitors to the Pact. You get a neat insight into the world behind the lines for Chaos.

I really liked that one as well as the one about the civil war between the Pact and the Sons of Sek.

The follow up to the Volpone Bluebloods story in the second anthology was super disappointing though.

Yes, you definitely should. I reread the entire series starting with Eisenhorn and it greatly increased the payoff and enjoyment.

If it has been years there are some really good books you should check out like Vaults of Terra and Watchers of the Throne among others. BL fiction has improved quite a bit recently, still a lot of crap bolter porn but the standouts are excellent and more frequent than they used to be.

Penitent LE just came in. This is one of my favorite LEs, it's beautiful and very different compared to the others. I hope BL puts out a Pariah LE once they finish with Ravenor.

The Strange Demise of Titus Endor by Abnett is the best piece of 40K fiction I've ever read and it stands entirely on its own (though it spoils a minor plot point from IIRC the second or third Eisenhorn book).

I read a rumor that after it was published, GW decided that they didn't want to ever put out anything so high-brow and depressing again in BL. If true, that would be incredibly disappointing.

That cover is beautiful and also illustrated with art that directly reflects interesting story elements once you've read the book, I love it. I restrained myself from buying it because I don't need to fall down any more collecting holes, but it was tempting.

It could be, at least a part of him. Did you ever read the old Inquistor trilogy by Watson? In that there is a piece of the emperor that helps the Inquisitor in his quest, even gets him into the throne room without any of the custodes knowing to get a direct audience, but the broader consciousness of the emperor has no idea. He talks about how his consciousness has split and pursues different goals and is even sometimes in opposition to itself and he didn't even realize this other part of him was helping the Inquisitor. There are some other scattered examples in the lore of something similar. It's old lore but it could make sense in this case. In Black Legion series we see the astronomican/emperor spirit in the firetide that is independent from the emperor on the throne.

Check out The Reverie by Peter Fehervari. It’s in the warhammer horror series but to me it came off as a different viewpoint of the Astartes. It’s great.

They technically aren't anymore, but some of the ideas that started in those books is still canon. You should read them anyway though they are batshit insane and very different from modern 40k. The Inquisitor visits both the Black Library and the golden throne room, it's wild.

Same. I've never seen the thread react this way to a book. I've seen similar reactions on social media. This was an extremely good move on BL's part. They've spent a decade building up the heresy characters. It makes sense to continue to bring at least some of them into 40k.

Picked up the hardcover version of Penitent and Pariah for a re-read. I had almost forgotten how engrossing Abnett’s writing is. I wanna blaze through Pariah and get started on Penitent, but the story is so good that I just can’t rush past it.

Pariah was a better book. Penitent had better moments.

I actually found the bits everyone’s raving about on this page to be the least well executed compared to other spectacular scenes like King Door. But I thought basically every scene with the old cast of characters was weak and the writing was super shallow. Penitent was a lot better about it largely because it gave the inquisitors and their retinues less screentime. The book was at its best exploring the remarkable world, Queen Mab, The City of Dust, or the entire underground adventure. It was at its weakest doing fanservice or plot reveals.

Biplane
Jul 18, 2005

I read both Pariah and Penitent for the first time, and back to back. Pariah was very good but I think Penitent won it for me, because I'm all about the City of Dust and the King in Yellow gently caress yes

Pariah had me guessing for the whole book basically, and that last reveal was a big WTF.

Penitent, I was mostly able to reason my way to some of what would happen, after reading Pariah so recently, but I was thoroughly hooked and I read it all in one sitting. I would literally kill to be able to buy Mortis right now.
