so the term "hot dog" apparently started as a grim joke about the provenance of the meat sold by really cheap street carts, but eventually just became what we normally call those things.

what I'm saying is that I can easily imagine this large and violent man getting apoplectic over what was then a mildly gross slang term.

Well yeah they used to be, but they still are. That strip is only aping 1960s/70s comic styles, it turns it was drawn only a couple years ago by a kid who grew up reading old Kliban and Robert Crumbs comics

Thanks for sharing that - I knew the comics themselves were contemporary, but I had always pictured them being drawn by an R. Crumb-type; I had no idea he was so young.
