yeah that makes sense. I just started night 1 myself. It's really weird with no announcers at all. At this point I really know know like the top 4-5 guys in NOAH so this will be a good way to learn the roster.

Related to NOAH but unrelated to the N1 - at the tag title match recently the defending champions also had a second set of belts besides the GHC. What were those?

IIRC Sakuraba had them made for Sugiura and himself to commemorate their exhibition grappling match at a Quintet show.

Makes sense, it's a Japanese indie promotion, of course Stronghearts will get involved. If Fuminori Abe doesn't appear I'd be mildly shocked too.

Wonder if it includes Irie or if it's just the core trio. I also wonder if anyone has heard anything from Takehiro Yamamura. His Twitter has a video of him from last year doing some back bumps in a ring and then everything else seems to be promoting Stronghearts endeavours or his own DJing.

Yamamura is djing full-time now in Kobe. If he was wrestling in America with his neck and back injuries, a doctor wouldn’t clear him a second time to return, but I can’t rule it out (he really shouldn’t ever come back it’s going to be a ticking clock until he gets more hurt/perhaps paralyzed.)

LIDET and STH was a long time coming. After GLEAT was announced, it was expected they’d end up there as CIMA will chase the bag and T and Linda are still attached to him for better or for worse. When CIMA was announced for the Zero One for the sumo hall show/Lindaman got strapped up I figured plans changed.

Huh. OK. Signed exclusively or? I'm just wondering about the AJPW Junior title.

I really don't know what GLEAT is even meant to be, I know it's not meant to be an exclusively shootstyle promotion but actually signing Stronghearts to a contract still seems kind of odd, relative to the little I've seen from them thus far. Not necessarily a bad thing, just not sure what they are trying to be.

It'll be their home promotion but I'm sure they're still gonna be working everywhere. The first show isn't even until July. They did shut down their merch store apparently though.

I don't think GLEAT has really established an identity for what their non-shoot style division will be yet, maybe Stronghearts can help with that

I found his easlier NOAH runs lacking but that probably was because he was forced into the champion spot due to Misawa's death and Akiyama being injured. And well that's really a difficult spot for anyone to do good in even if they do have talent

Not quite, but he was always viewed as having the potential to be this good. To cement himself as THE ace of NOAH. I remember the first time I ever saw him in singles action, on an ROH UK show in 2006 (same weekend of the outrageous Danielson Nigel World/Pure title unification match) against BJ Whitmer, I think in the opener & the match was definitely one of the 3 best on a show that featured Nigel, Cabana, Danielson, Roddy, The Briscoes, The Kings of Wrestling. You could tell he had something. But he got elevated to the GHC title in NOAH at a bad time, & then he left NOAH after their poor treatment of Kobashi & went to All Japan at a time where almost as soon as he & Akiyama & Suzuki & Aoki & Kanemaru arrived Mutoh & a bunch of his guys left to form Wrestle-1. So a lot of it was timing & other stuff getting in the way, but yeah, this was the time where he firmly established himself as arguably the best wrestler on the planet for 12 months, where everything clicked.

SatoshiMiwa
May 6, 2007

He was lacking something his first run with NOAH and just didn't get the time to work on it cause of Misawa's death. His series with Tanahashi in 2010 shows it as the match they had in NOAH was very much Tanahashi standing out proving he was the guy while Shiozaki was just there

His defence against Saito is the weakest, and can be skipped if you don't much care about their history and the Misawa connection. Past that his N-1 tour was very solid, the matches with Mochizuki and Kitamiya being my favourite

He's had his shoulder taped since the better part of last year, so this is a good thing. I thought their multiman match was really good, while the other Kongoh multiman blew because of fucken Kendo Kasshin

I'll watch the VOD of the main event later but... arrrrrrrrgh they're really giving him an extended title run huh (unless Kitamiya caves Mutoh's head in with a shoot headbutt, actually please no)

Will the suffering ever end? (I was 99% sure Muto wasn't dropping the belt at V0 but I had some hope.)

The show was mostly fine. The young boy squad continues to impress me. Yoshioka/Kotoge was pretty good with a baffling result. Main event was a match. In my opinion Kiyomiya wasn't elevated at all and Kitamiya will most likely suffer the same fate.

Bad in the short term, good in the long term because he REALLY needs a break. I hope he can be back for the big Cyberfight show but who knows?

Haven't seen this show yet but man that result of the main is a bummer, if not entirely shocking.

As for DG, if you sub to DG now you should be able to catch the 2 nights of Champion Gate from last weekend before they get taken down until they air on Japanese TV. If Night 1 is down though I'll link you to a Bilibili stream of it. Though Night 2 is the much better night of the weekend and Shun vs Ishida is one of the best matches of the year so far. The next live show is on the 19th (& I just checked, they just uploaded the English commentary for Champion Gate so you will be able to watch those)

Every Korakuen and Big Event has English commentary either live or after the fact, so about 1-3 times a month. The current English commentator (jae) knows Japanese so he tries to live translate the promos to the best of his ability. He is also the most knowledgeable person about the history of the Dragon System.

The faction stuff is really quite straightforward. There's one big heel faction, at present RED (stands for Real Extreme Diffusion), it's been around since 2018, Eita is the top guy. It's a continuation of ANTIAS (which was only around for about 6 months), which in turn was a continuation of VerserK.

We've got a bunch of change happening coming out of the generation battles of 2020 but the other main groups so far are Masquerade, led by Shun Skywalker, HIGH-END which is seemingly lead by YAMATO and Team Boku which is basically a mess and will probably be wrapped up before too long when Bokutimo Dragon loses his mask to Diamante. We know this because Naruki Doi has said he's done with them.

They have gotten much more English shows up. As said, the once a month Korakuen show is usually live with English commentary, as are the bigger shows. But you can also expect most shows to get English commentary uploaded within a week, if you can wait.

I'd also say that if you have the time, the Open The Voice Gate podcast is really worth listening to if you follow DG, they give good breakdowns of the shows but also good analysis and Mike and Case have knowledge of the DG system that is second only to Jae among English speaking fans.

Also I'm posting this here for anyone who doesn't read the MOTYC thread: You really should make the time to watch Shun Skywalker vs Kaito Ishida from the 7th March.
