Radio Nowhere posted:Cumulus has announced their Rush replacement. I have no idea who this guy is. Dan Bongino is most closely aligned with Mark Levin. He used to guest host for Levin a lot. He got his start with a tell-all book about his time as a secret service agent in the Clinton administration which included a bunch of unverifiable claims that overlapped with a lot of the narratives going around in RWM at that time. That got him his start as a talking head, and then he's been on wingnut welfare ever since. His style is very.. reductive and he loves any conspiracy that involves a Democrat no matter how unhinged. He's not very smart, even by talk radio standards, and has very little range or personality. Imagine like Hannity but dumber, and with constant talk about how "I know <completely unrelated thing> because I was a secret service agent." I think Rush dying is going to end up a lot like when Stern moved to satellite. You're going to see the timeslot split to regional players. The big networks probably don't want another national host like Rush to develop. He was a huge hassle for a lot of stations that syndicated his show because it was just the thing you did when you ran a right wing talk station. But after the Sandra Fluke comments it became difficult to book advertisers for the slots. So his show ended up being kind of a loss leader for the stations. Conservative radio listeners are really loyal. So the stations were still able to make some money on less controversial hosts leading up to Limbaugh and then after his show. It's worth noting that Rush absolutely did not have 15 million listeners. The source for that figure doesn't give any citation for it, and Premiere Radio Networks doesn't release ratings data publicly. The only way to get access to that data would be if you were a potential national advertiser, and even then Premiere has every incentive to just lie about it there too. A common tactic to make listenership seem huge is to treat each day's audience as if they're completely new and cite cumulative ratings numbers for the month (Levin does this a lot). Or they'll cite something like potential audience reach which is a combination of market size, market coverage, and demographic data which basically means they take credit for the listenership of every affiliate even if nobody listens to the program at all. This is why you saw fights in some big radio markets to make sure Rush was on somewhere, literally anywhere, so they could claim the whole market for advertising purposes. For certain Limbaugh had the largest reach of any of the right wing hosts, but it probably hasn't been 15 million in decades. The battle that's going to happen within RWM to claim the mantle of top RWM host is going to be more pivotal than any of the business concerns. Premiere is probably super psyched. They get probably another year (or infinity years?) of syndication fees for the show without having to pay him anymore. Profits for everyone will most likely go up with Limbaugh gone. You might even see some national advertisers come back to the show because they feel more comfortable knowing it's an edited/curated Limbaugh that's not going to say the things that got them in trouble before. That was the year he got popped with Viagra coming back from a sex tour in the Dominican Republic and lost substantial hearing due to his opiate addiction that he blamed on his maid. He was able to mostly keep it together, but Obama winning wasn't something he was prepared for. We had a GOP president for 8 years, and so he didn't have to do very much. Obama's election broke a lot of people, and Limbaugh wasn't able to keep up with the crazy. People kept listening because they liked him, but it created an opportunity for other players (as nine-gear-crow pointed out). nine-gear crow posted:I still lol sometimes when I remember that Glenn Beck used to be the most popular political media figure in the United States at one point and now he broadcasts to like 40 people on a pirate radio station run out of his basement that's owned by Mark Levin or something. Glenn Beck's rise/fall is still one of the most hilarious things I've ever seen in RWM. My dad loved it, and I had been following Beck a bit since he started his show on FNC. When the Beck advertiser exodus started happening I tried to warn him the show wasn't long for this world, and I just got back a "what do you know?" kind of tone. I think Beck was gone within 6 months of that conversation. It wasn't hard to see that's what was happening if you knew literally anything about time slots/ad booking, but the denial was hilarious. Beck's key sin is that he became popular for saying insane things, but did not realize that you need to let your paymasters in on your schtick. Fox had him in what was essentially a completely dead slot that wasn't supposed to do anything but fill time and sell easy ad slots. When they stopped being able to fill those previously easy-to-fill slots they let him go. He didn't understand you need leverage to be able to say the things he was saying, but he had none so he had to gently caress off to The Blaze and then get bailed out by Levin. A single dog is acceptable, but people don't want to take care of the dog. These people buy a dog to be friends with the dog they're not befriending, that their prisoner can have a companion in captivity. Nonworking, unloved house dogs are just some hosed up status thing from television. I prefer goat, yard/roof turkeys, lawn birbs, and cats with bells and ridiculous collars that make them feel cool and scare birds away so they graduate to chasing deer.

Yeah, lovely take. Dogs have been bred to be social with people. Our dogs get spoiled, played with, cleaned, weekly pack days on the bed, and one loves lap time after dinner. One got a ruptured disk in his neck last year and we saved up $5k so he could have surgery out of state. Thankfully he healed by himself and we got a bonus. That's a good boy! We've lost two dogs over the years and each time it's like losing a family member. I can (kind of) understand not being a dog person in favor of cats, birds or scalies, but having that kind of animosity towards something we made to be companions is just baffling to me. Having a bald eagle named Uncle Sam attack Trump when he tried for a photo of was all the warning I needed, not that I thought anything positive of him before that.

I started to listen to the Behind the Bastards Limbaugh two-parter and was happy to learn right away that I wasn't the only one who thought that Rush was parody and playing a character when he started out. I went through a brief spell in the early 90's - for maybe like 2 or 3 months - where I totally thought it was some kind of comedy show and listened fairly regularly then. I legit thought it was satire and decided to check out when he started making rape jokes and beating up on blacks and gay people.

He straight up gave up his own soul and identity to play a character right up until his death. It's pretty funny to be so greedy you annihilate your own self. Also, his dad hated him being a DJ. So I like to think, even though he did "good" for the GOP, he was always a disappointment.

He was also a huge bigot and racist though, and made sure people listening also thought that gay people, single mothers, minorities, etc. etc. etc. were "non functional" or whatever loving euphemism he'd like to use. I kind of doubt that was part of his 'character', if there even was one after a certain point or if he just started wholly consuming the poo poo he'd take on the carpet every day.

Being scared and uncomfortable around dogs is perfectly fine, they can be dangerous, and you never know if a dog has been trained properly. I agree that doesn't say anything about a person's character. "Dogs are smelly beasts and nobody should own them" is completely different.

RWers are incredibly dishonest, but paradoxically, also quite honest as well. what i mean by that is that when you confront a rightwinger with one of their REALLY lovely opinions, in most cases, they immediately run away from them, and insist they don't believe such lovely opinions. but if you prod them a bit, they'll eventually admit how they feel. it's annoying, frustrating, and really loving infuriating, but given enough time, they will tell you how they truly feel right after engaging in performative outrage at the thought they could believe in the lovely thing you accused them of. to give a clearer idea of what i'm referring to, observe the following (slightly paraphrased) discussion i've had with a chud recently: chud: leftists love to call me a nazi/fascist cause i support small government me: pretty sure they call you that cause you support locking up immigrant children (note: i never met this guy until now) chud: wow good thing i never supported such a thing and how DARE you accuse me of doing so! me: oh, sorry. i may have misjudged you. so you DON'T support locking up immigrant children? chud: i'd prefer if you deport them instead me: okay that's....still bad, but what if we can't deport them? chud: we should lock them up me: and then after that the conversation gets stupider, as i then say 'so i was right the first time' around and they once again deny it, all the while repeatedly affirming it. this wasn't a one off thing, btw. i've had idiotic conversations like this with RWers for YEARS and 99% of them are like this except in many cases it takes much longer for them to admit it.
