The Saga

Okay so "udon hair" is absolutely another Japanese pun that got somewhat lost in translation—"hair" in Japanese is "ke". Udon hair -> udon-ke -> Udonge.

Part 40: The Specialist in Suffering

As a preface, I feel I should mention that I'm not going to be doing any V3 fights this time around. Partially because there's still a few Navis we can't actually fight yet, and partially because I can't reliably get S-Ranks on everyone.

That being said... there's a lot of bosses to go around, and I've only done a few of the V2 forms!

Music: In Room

: "But it's how you deal with the incidents that makes you a hero, I feel."

First up! Tsubaki and SpannerMan! I forget when exactly this fight was made available, but it was likely when I was always busy with plot stuff/being stuck in Engelles, so. Sorry 'bout that, Tsubaki!

Music: VS. Navi

SpannerMan V2 is... honestly, not that interesting. He's got 1500 HP by now, which isn't too shabby, but he's still kind of a Gutsman. Originally I thought his wrench cracking a random panel was new, but no, that was in his V1 moveset as well. He just gets faster and more aggressive.

Which, to be fair, is a point in his favor - he's still pretty telegraphed, but a lot of his attacks combo well with each other. IE: Spanner Throw/Metal Impact can lock down a lot of your area quickly, which makes it easier for him to hit you with the fire, and dodging the fire by heading to the front opens you up to Spark Arm, etc.

Will his newfound aggression help him win??

Nope. :v:

: "Oh yeah, I haven't given you my P-Code yet."

Eh?

: "You can use this to access Eien Area from my PC!"

Oh. Thanks, I guess?

If I recall correctly, it does take a bit for the V2 to become available, even if you do it as soon as possible. Which means by the time you've gotten his shortcut there's really no reason to use it! ...Well, I say that, but Eien Area's a pain to navigate and I'm pretty sure his warp point comes out right next to a shop, so, it's not completely pointless.

Music: In Room

: "I'm so excited that my friends are coming to my house!"

Next up, we have Tenshi and Iku! :yayclod:

This fight is the reason why I held off so long on fighting SpannerMan - you can only fight Tenshi after your trip to Engelles. Y'know, due to the whole "worrying about police interrogation" and "being set on fire" stuff. Minor things like that.

Music: VS. Navi

In contrast to SpannerMan, Iku actually does get a few upgrades. For one, her homing thunderbolts strike four times instead of three. Not much of a change, granted, but it's something. Her ball lightning also comes out twice as fast.

The other change is a bit more notable - she packs AreaGrabs now! She doesn't use them super aggressively, but if you dodge too many of her attacks, she'll try to cut you off. You have to dodge a lot to really make her bring it out, though - she didn't get a chance to use it during the fight.

Let's give her thunderous applause for her efforts, though!

:toot:

Music: Eien City

As for our next opponents... it's been a while since we've been to Eien Town, huh?

: "Let's NetBattle!"

Reimu status: still criminally adorable.

Music: VS. Navi

TortoiseMan is now packing 1800 HP, and his most notable change is that he can now drop up to four boulders from the sky at once. Oh, and he feels no remorse about doing that during his other attacks - the boulders drop randomly, but one of my attempts had him hit the back column with boulders while hitting the front two columns with his sand wave. How am I supposed to dodge that, TortoiseMan?? That's against the spellcard rules and you know it. :argh:

: Doh ho ho ho... should've been packing GhostBdy chips, eh? Young'ns these days, no sense at all.

As a side note, one important thing to note about TortoiseMan is that his shell attacks have the Breaking attribute. Which does pierce SuperArmor, so you can't face-tank everything and expect an S-rank at the end.

That being said, let's fight an old man.

D'aww, Reimu looks up to us. :shobon:

Music: Eien City

Aside from Reimu, we have one more friend to visit in Eien, Keine! She hangs out outside the school gates.

Music: VS. Navi

HakutakuMan! He... didn't change at all, really. His BeastOut form is about as fast as it can get, and his first phase is just as much of a joke fight as ever. The only change to him is his HP and his damage. BeastOut is still pretty dangerous, but, well...

Weirdly, he's almost easier in his later stages than he is in his first - BeastOut still procs at 50% HP, and that works against him. If you hit him with one strong heat attack in his V1, that might've been enough to send him over the edge immediately.

In his V2, you can do up to 650 damage before it triggers. Which means if you, do an attack that does 600 damage, like, say, GrasStag + DrgnFlm1... you still have leeway to hit him with that again, sending him into BeastOut with around 10% of his HP, instead of 50%.

I'll fight him fairly, though.

: "Hmm... Not bad!"

I'm gonna be honest: even though I'm not showing the V3 right now, HakutakuMan is who I use when I want to roll for interesting things with Crimson Noise. Or when I need FreezeFrags.

That said, I can't help but feel like Keine's going easy on us. She is a teacher, after all.

: "I'm feeling pretty confident, so let's NetBattle!"

Music: Genso University

Our last friendly rematch of the day is Medicine! Who, strictly speaking, isn't supposed to be a V2. The game kind of expects you to find her V2 while she's still running around City Area, and then have her V3 fight after Yamame's fixed her up. However, I completely forgot to do that purposefully held off so we could fight her as a friend.

Music: VS. Navi

As a consequence of her being available so early, her has the smallest amount of health aside from Marisa, Sakuya, and Cirno. I... probably should've done this earlier after all.

It's been ages since her V1 fight, but the only real difference is the fact that she can convert three panels to grass at a time instead of two.

Early boss or not, there's no reason to not give her a fair fight!

See? That wasn't so bad.

: "We'll beat them next time, Yamame!"

Yep, just a friendly rematch between friends. No hard feelings, right?

(Now, hypothetically, if it wasn't a friendly rematch, well... )

: "My Navi was in real trouble at some points, though..."

Before we leave, I wanna mention this guy. If I recall correctly, his thesis was on Cyber-Crime. Someone's certainly got their work cut out for 'em!

Music: Internet

And speaking of cyber-criminals... I said Medicine was our last friendly rematch today. If we take a left at the signpost in Eien Area 1...

We can fight PyroMan V2.

Again, not much has changed in his AI, but he's notable for being difficult enough that I needed to set ShlArmr2 as my regular if I wanted a chance at S-ranking him. Technically I could've fought him right after his scenario but hahhahah we saw how that went down with Murasa. :shepicide:

That said, I can take him down much more reliably than I can Murasa, so hopefully letting his V3 loose on the net won't end too poorly.

Hopefully.

Music: Undernet

The last V2 we have available to us at the moment is all the way back in Undernet 6, just left of the start. We already fought Murasa way back when, so that just leaves...

Music: VS. Navi

ScissorMan. Now, I know this game certainly isn't afraid of giving you powerful chips, but 2200 HP is still a lot to chew through, as it turns out! He's a big bulky bug dude. As far as I can tell, he's still pretty much the same as last time, but it's possible his instant-kill attack has a higher damage threshold now. But ideally you'll never have low enough HP for that to be a problem, so.

Let's squish this bug.

His main claim to fame is his massive wall of HP. Not that it's hard to deal that much damage, more that it's hard to do so quickly. It took me a few attempts to get him in under 30 seconds. That, and as someone using ShlArmr2 instead of Gaia Style for SuperArmor, his Fury Cutter attack has a way of eating up those defenses real fast.

With that, we've officially taken down every V2 boss available right now! Sadly, BeetleMan and Yorihime are inaccessible at the moment, due to their operators having more important things to be doing. We'll fight them eventually, don't worry.

Yes, technically I could go fight Yorihime in the Demo Room, but she'll be available for real soon enough.

Music: Internet

Now that that's taken care of, what say we finish off the request board?

: "I want to get her a present to cheer her up while she's still in the hospital."
: "I need help finding the perfect present for her, I can't come up with anything on my own."
: "I'll be on the second floor of the Yagokoro General Hospital."

Hmm. Something about this seems familiar.

Hmmmm.

Music: Hospital

: "You're our client?"
: "Uh huh!"

Okay, yes, it was completely obvious who posted the request. We get to say hi to Koishi again!

: "Flowers?"

Wait, hang on a minute...

: You said you had no idea what to get for her in your post... if you figured it out, isn't the request solved already?
: I couldn't find the 'edit post' button, okay?

: "So I want to get something nice for her to smell before the operation!"
: "Unyu..."
: "...Is your Navi alright?"

Maybe Okuu has a suggestion?

: "Be patient! It's for sis Satori!"
: "Unyu..."

Ah, no, she's just feeling neglected.

...Imagine if your phone was sentient and started pouting at you if you didn't go on twitter enough. That's literally what's happening here.

Back to the matter at hand...

: "Until the surgery is over, she won't be able to see them..."
: "It has to be something that smells nice, so she can enjoy them now..."
: "But they also have to be pretty, for after the surgery!"
: "So something that looks good and smells good..."
: "That's a nice combination."

So, it's less that Koishi doesn't know what to get Satori, and more that she doesn't know enough about flowers to get the kind she wants. That seems simple enough!

: "Let me know how much I owe you!"
: "Florist in Central City, got it!"

Especially considering we don't have to hunt down the florist ourselves, it's just a simple fetchquest.

: Florist... florist... who around here looks like they know about flowers...?

Music: Central City

Oh hey! That's certainly a unique sprite.

: "Ah... Are you a florist?"
: "...Yes, I'm a florist."
: "This is my shop - part coffee shop, part florist's."

I can't imagine there's much overlap between those two groups of clientele.

: "Are you a friend of Mama's?"

Alice, that doesn't exactly narrow it down when you don't say who your mom is.

She figures it out quickly enough, though. Meet our newest touhou character, Yuuka Kazami!

Yuuka's one of the very few characters who originated in the PC-98 games, who wasn't essentially retconned out of existence after the jump to Windows. As in, aside from Reimu, Marisa, and Alice, she's the only other one. That said, she's not a particularly important character? In her initial appearance, she was a final boss, but her end goal was to kill time because she was bored.

She's occasionally seen shopping in the human village, so she's not explicitly antagonistic towards humans, though it's debatable over whether that's because she's on good terms with everybody, or because she's strong enough that nobody wants to bother her so long as she's not actively causing problems.

Most of the time, she just hangs out in her flower field, as an almost literal personification of the phrase "stop and smell the flowers." In contrast to a lot of characters in this game who have wildly different personalities from their canon counterparts... Yuuka running a laid-back flower shop is pretty spot on.

: "Ah..."

As a side note, "Mugenkan" was the name of the mansion she lived in during the PC-98 games. It was underneath the Lake of Blood.

...PC-98 could occasionally be a bit edgier than the current iteration of Touhou. :sweatdrop:

: "Are you alright?"
: "I'm fine! It's just that..."
: (I thought she just had stomach problems...)
: "I sent my Navi to Eien Square an hour ago..."
: "But they haven't answered any calls since they got there."

Alice, you fool, you asked someone what's wrong while in the middle of a sidequest. Now look what you've done.

Yeah, I figured things wouldn't be that easy.

: "Would you? Thank you!"

Yeah, yeah, sure, why not.

: "Let's search near Eien Square!"

Alice, I feel like you don't understand the point of the request board. People get helped, we get things in return! It's win-win.

Music: Internet

One thing I will say about this sidequest: "near Eien Square" isn't super helpful as far as directions go.

Mostly because there's two warp panels leading out of the Square. This one, which links to Eien Area 3? Yeah, that's a complete waste of time.

We want to take the warp to Eien Area 2 instead, and leave via the one-way path. AKA: the last place I checked because you always take the one-way path when you've exhausted all your other options.

: "They were saying something about a gathering in Undernet 3!"

...Well, that's not worrying or ominous at all.

Music: Undernet

I've navigated through Undernet 3 enough times in the past few updates that I no longer need a map to remember where I'm going. So, silver lining.

Hm, yeah, don't like the looks of this.

...oh good, this is much less dark than I thought it'd be.

Hey. Buddy.

How's it goin'. Good?

: "...You could say that."
: "However... you might not like just who will be suffering!"

We've established what Shanghai does to lowlifes operating on her turf, yes?

: "If you're not here to help, we'll help ourselves to your money!"

:black101:

Music: VS. Tournament

These two are named "Actu" and "Stopper". I'm not quite sure what that might be referencing? But hey, they're about to die, so... who cares? :v:

That said, for a couple of minibosses, they're actually kind of annoyingly effective.

I'm not sure what's worse: me, for somehow getting stuck here because I was too lazy to turn on wingstyle, or that guy, for somehow failing to hit me in spite of it.

: (...I feel a mysterious force at work.)

And that takes care of that. Good riddance.

: "Are you Miss Yuuka's Navi?"
: "You should head back to the shop quickly."
: "She's having trouble opening the shop."
: "Right away!"

Freed from her assailants, Yuuka's NetNavi jacks out.

: "Don't even think about it!"
: "We were here to help the florist's Navi, so we could get flowers!"
: "You're right. Let's head back to the shop in Central City."

Shanghai may bash faces in when there's a problem going on right in front of her, but she's not exactly going to go looking for trouble herself. One good deed at a time!

Music: Central City

: "What kind were you looking for?"
: "...Something that smells good, for a hospital gift?"
: "What do you think of preserved flowers?"
: "Preserved?"
: "Preservatives?"

...Go on.

: "They don't need any water, and will always look fresh."
: "You can apply scented oils whenever the scent starts to fade."
: "...I guess that's one way to get nice-smelling flowers."

Long-lasting flowers would be good, considering we don't know how long it'll be before Satori's eyes are officially healed. Regular flowers last, what, two weeks max?

That, and, yeah, pollen. Probably best not to bring something that could cause an allergic reaction around sick people.

: "Alright!"

: "A bit of a roundabout way to get flowers, but we've got them."

Flowers, get! :toot:

Unrelated, but, the Reincarnation Program not fitting in the menu is always a little funny to me. Why not abbreviate it "Reincarnation Prog."? Eh, whatever. Back to Koishi!

Music: Hospital

: "Free of charge. The florist owed us a favor."
: "Really? No way!"
: "Thank you very much!"

And for our reward, we get another HPMemory, bringing us to a base of 820! Which also means I need to find four more HPMemories before I can make my total a nice, round number again, alas.

: "Come visit Satori some time!"

: "I suppose they've had very different lives. Should we go?"

We could leave, but...

It'd be rude not to stop in and say hi, right?

: "Ah... You're the one from back then."
: "Hi, Satori."
: "Thank you. I'm so glad you came to visit me."
: "You knew it was Alice even though you're blind, huh."
: "I may be blind, but there are some things I can see."
: ...That, and I have ears. You were right outside the door. Koishi's not exactly subtle, you know?

: "Right. If not for Rin, I wouldn't have much of a life at all."

I'm sure there's some blind people who'd likely take issue with the way that line's written, but... considering she wasn't always blind, she's likely more than a bit bitter about her situation. That, and the Battle Network setting probably would be a nightmare to navigate blind were service AI not standard.

: "Koishi, Rin, and you too, Alice... I really want to see your faces someday soon."

:shobon:

: "Unyuu..."

Alright! Request officially complete. Maybe we'll get to see the four of them again soon?

: "I found the perfect flower to give to my sister!"
: "Uhh... How do I submit this message?"

This line right here is exactly why I made a joke about the edit button earlier. Koishi's not exactly great at technology. :allears:

: "Are there any philosophers out there?"
: "Anyone who wishes to talk to me can come to the depths of City Area 2."

Music: Internet

Sounds simple enough, why not?

Don't be fooled by the meeting place and think it'll be quicker to warp to Campus Square, City Area 2 is the first area after Genso. Much faster than navigating through City Area 1's teleporter maze.

Y'know, so long as you avoid Genso Area 2's resident ghost fairy.

This is a V2 Bossfight only update, shoo!

Our client is can be found if you head straight to the back of the area, right behind the Interiors' Shop.

: "Young lady, are you the one who responded to my request?"

: Yep.

: "NetNavis are but 1s and 0s one after another."
: "Is my conciousness merely a pattern? One very long number?"

: Nope.

: "Where lies the line between NetNavi and data?"

: Yep.

: "NetNavis, viruses, but what else? What of other existences?"
: "What is data, and what is not?"
: "We just don't know..."
: "That is why we must think!"

: "You have my heartfelt thanks!"
: ...Sure?

He gives us 100 of each kind of -Frags, pleased at having found such a stimulating conversationist.

I can't help but be reminded of the Wise Machine from NieR: Automata. Except his existential crisis resolved happily, instead of with him deciding to take the plunge into the Data Sea.

...Anyways, that's it, that's the entire quest. :v:

: "I don't think I found an answer."
: "I want to talk to that girl again."

And now the request board is officially complete! For now, at least.

: You know, I'm something of a philosopher myself.

Music: Engelles

For our final stop this update, we're gonna take a quick detour to Engelles! Because I remembered something existed here when I went to check if Wriggle was around to fight.

The Quiz King!!!

: "Come on now! It's quiz time!"

Are y'all excited? I'm excited.

: "It's a quiz showdown! Answer all 15 correctly and earn yourself a grand prize!"

: Go!
: "Question number 1!"

50
10
0

Even without any boosts, I'm pretty sure a tier-two Kedama can't survive all three hits from a ShotGun1.

: "Correct! Question 2!"

Brown
Blue
Green

Gonna be honest, this one was a complete guess.

: "Correct! Question number 3!"

EvilEyeΩ
EvilEyeΣ
EvilEyeβ

This one's tricky. You'd think EvilEyeβ would be the second form, considering it has beta in it's name, but no, the answer is Sigma.

: "Too good! On to question number 4!"

3 BugFrags
5 BugFrags
2 BugFrags

: C'mon, I could answer this one in my sleep.
: You already used that joke in the humor update!
: "Good! Question number 5!"

Campus Square
Remilia's HP
Genso Square

This might've been harder if one of the responses was someplace after Eien. As it is, Remilia's is in the same area as Genso Square but closer to the front, and Campus Square is connected to City Area 1, and I actively avoid that place.

: "Also right! Number 6!"

26
29
32

There's a single offhand line from Kumako where she mentions that her sister is 4 years older than her. But if you remember that, you're lying.

: "So old! Next question!"
: Oi! Look who's talkin', old timer!

: "It's been a wild ride, that's for sure! What question were we on?"

5th
6th
7th

There's always one of these.

: "Thought I had ya! Question 8!"

RayGun C
1000 Zenny
1 BugFrag

Is it a bad sign that I actually do remember this because of this LP? I used that money to buy stuff at that very shop.

: "Question 9! You're getting there!"

1040
2080
4160

This is just simple math:
130 x 2 (Full Synchro) = 260
x 2 (Elemental Weakness) = 520
x 2 (Grass Panel) = 1040
x 2 (Blinded) = 2080

: "That would send your enemies running! Question 10!"

Mushroom guides
Novels about wizards
Black magic books

They were gifts from her mom! :eng101:

: "MMM! Question 11!"

Genso Report Network
Genso News Network
Genso Soup Network

I dunno about you, but I'd read a newspaper called "Soup".

: "Alright! You're at 12!"

GaiaSwrd
BambSwrd
LeafSwrd

GaiaSwrd was the Leaf-Element Sword chip from BN2 and 3, while BambSwrd was the equivalent from BN6! Presumably, it wasn't included in 4 or 5 because that was when they were pushing Sword-Element as a thing and they didn't want to confuse small children. Or something.

: "In the last leg now! Question 13!"

Sub Chip Vending Machine
Request Board
Royal Bed

I know it's the first one because I stopped by the Interiors Shop on my way to the Philosopher Navi, saw the price of that thing, and promptly closed the shop window. It's stupidly expensive.

: "Daylight robbery it is! Question 14!"

CatDog
NekoDolphin
TeddyBear

How could anyone forget the cutest plushie?

: "Amazing! Last question!"

6
7
8

First time I had to guess at this and got it wrong. I never bought a BltzBstr addon! Evidently, it costs 2 Hertz, same as the BstrPwr AddOns.

: "A prize to our gorgeous winner!"

And our prize is...!

...Why do you have that??

Um.

No, no, hang on, seriously, aren't these (techincally) illegal? If Shanghai was anyone but Shanghai, this would be super dangerous, right?? Answer me!

Wait, when he said he could die happy... did he...?

: "I'm still alive and kicking! Don't go declaring people dead without their permission!"

No, he's fine. :haw:

Anyways, DrkAnchr! This does exactly what it sounds like.

The anchors dont all hit simultaneously, so if an enemy moves at the right moment they could conceivably dodge it, but... it's a flat 300 breaking damage to their entire field, crackling every panel. It's amazing.

Dubiously legal prizes aside... I think we've given the NetAgents enough time to work out what exactly was up with that portal. They should be ready any day now.

Well, that’s not quite right either; that’s a Sigma.

Epsilon in this context would just look the same as a regular E as a capital, or be ε in lowercase.

If you think about it, it's a bit like trying to argue that humans aren't made up of atoms.

The best part about Yuuka is that her power is manipulation of flowers, which has no hidden meaning to make it more terrifying like most other Touhou powers. She's just that strong.

:eng101: GaiaSword is actually unrelated to the elemental swords, and is instead the unique chip that Wood Styles get to use; it eats every other chip you've selected after it, but combines their power together. BambooSword is only in BN3 and 6, though; why not 2, when it had a program advance for Fire/Aqua/Elecsword? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh next question.

noooo, i'm a shaaaamm :negative:

I remembered a leaf-element sword existed in 2 & 3, so I didn't bother to check, but I completely forgot BN3 had Bamboo and Gaia Swords.

(also I just checked BN2's library and it doesn't have BambSwrd OR GaiaSwrd, so I was wrong on all accounts)

Yeah, your library extends to accommodate for them. If you're on the Virtual Console, press the Network menu option and you'll get all of them.

So! I managed to talk at great length with one of the former devs, and I learned a lot about stuff that went on behind-the-scenes with Shanghai! Holy poo poo things were not pleasant. :(
I managed to get my hand on a raw resource archive that was (supposedly) considered lost. And boy howdy there's some good concept work in here! And boy howdy there's a whole bunch of stuff that's extraneous that I'm still sifting through! And boy howdy there's, like, actual porn in here so I can't post it! I'm still sifting through stuff, but here's some notable stuff (not the porn). Please enjoy!

Yo poo poo beta Reisen had a visor? And Tsubaki looked really shounen!

A higher-res rendition of DruidMan! Dude looks cool!

And his NetOp. The plot's starting to close in...

TankMan remains the best girl in all of Shanghai.

Well now this is unexpected. A full reference of SpannerMan! Dude's looking drat amazing!

And PyroMan, by extension. Definitely a lot of work went into PyroMan's design, but...

Interesting little thing. All of the friend Navi chip art is supposed to be a piece of a larger team attack picture. Nice!
Kind of makes me wish there was a PA of all the friend chips...

The art used for Reisen's portrait.

Being a NetAgent's hard work. Do your best, Reisen.

...I'm not gonna flood the thread, but I'll probably post more, later. All of the work that went into this game is really wonderful, everyone involved was both extremely creative and passionate, and it shows.
Even if the development was troubled, I really love Shanghai. And I'm glad that the game managed to be released and "finished".

Man all of that art is loving fantastic, and also incredibly interesting. The friend navi chip art being part of one larger piece is really cool, and this all really makes me wish we got to see it in some form.

And of course the archive itself haha, I assume there's no way to send it through this lp's discord or the such, either?

TerminusEst13

Not through Discord, it is multiple gigabytes in filesize. Could probably upload it to something like Mega, though.

I'll ask him if he's comfortable with me passing it around. I'll admit I probably should've done that before posting art from it and I am willing to take the L on that, but aaaaaa cool art from cool game

oh hey, i actually got my hands on what i'm pretty sure is the exact same archive! :aaa: I've been going through it slowly because A: it's friggin' massive, and B: I've been kinda lazy about sorting it, hahhahh

I was considering doing a bonus update later on with a bunch of the concept art just because concept art is generally neat as hell. Like, I hadn't realize how much yorihime reminded me of KOS-MOS until I saw her in full. Though, I hadn't considered whether I'd need to ask permission for that... :sweatdrop:

Also, as a side note: one of the things in the archive was the art for the PAs, which were never implemented in this version, though they showed up in the most recent Shanghai Necro release. The only problem being the Darkchip PAs were blurred out because of copyright stuff. The archive has the official versions of those, including the blurred out ones... however, it's a .jpg file, instead of a .png like everything else. And it's got some really noticeable compression artifacts.

Would it be too much trouble to ask if you could see if the dev you're friends with has the uncompressed version of that sprite sheet?

There's a couple others missing from the HD sprites (AnchorRain, EternalCut, and MasterStyle), but I don't believe the first two ever actually got art, and the latter is, ironically, detailed enough that jpg artifacting doesn't make much of a difference.

Unrelated to the current LP, but... it turns out there's another Touhou/Battle Network crossover being worked on at the moment, "Dream Force Hartmann".

Judging by the art, it seems like it's currently in early alpha(?) but hey, count me intrigued!

Part 41: Corporate Espionage

Music: In Room

: "Huh? Sagume..."

: It's way too early for me to be dealing with NetAgents... why did I think that afternoon trip to Engelles was smart, again?

: "Well, here's what it says..."
: "It's been a while, Alice. Thank you for your help the other day."
: "Your work has helped us get a grasp on the true identity of those hooded Navis."
: "I'll be conducting a debriefing on the matter on the second floor of the Agent Center."
: "You're not a NetAgent, but I'd still like you to participate."
: "It's okay if you can't make it, but please come to the Agent Center if you can."

Translation:
: I literally don't have the authority to order you around, but you're the only one who was able to do anything last time, so this briefing is almost entirely for your benefit in the first place.

: "Do you? ...I don't really want to, but I guess we should."
: "Heh, I know exactly what you mean."

At this point, Alice is kinda resigned to the fact that she's The Protagonist. She's dealt with too many incidents to be anything but. :v:

: "Alright..."

: "Going to the Agent Center again, huh..."
: "Last we went with Tenshi, now it's just us."

Can't exactly bring your friends along to a top-secret meeting, huh.

Music: Genso Town

Unsurprisingly, most of the NPCs out and about are all talking about how the Net was temporarily overrun with serial killers. Y'know, standard everyday stuff.

: "It feels weird to miss going to school..."

*Insert joke about currently topical worldwide plague here*

But enough of that, we've got a meeting to attend!

Music: Main Center

: "There's nothing I can do...! I'm just a rookie!"

You know, it occurs to me: despite the fact that the NetAgents literally pilot giant mecha, this game's closer to the Magical Girl genre than anything. A rookie pilot might very well be the protagonist in that genre, but here? Only brightly-colored middle-schoolers allowed. :colbert:

Oh, and speaking of NPCs talking about the latest incident...

: "Are you even doing your jobs?!"
: "What are you doing about the disaster on the Net?!"

Yeah... y'all have fun with that!

We can now finally access the second floor of the Agent Center!

...It's pretty much the same as the first. Government buildings aren't really that exciting, frankly.

: "Thank you for your assistance."

It's a 50/50 on whether Reisen's report mentioned us solely for commendation, or if it was along the lines of "Promised NetNavi cash reward for assistance. Please forward all of Payroll's inevitable complaints to my Spam folder."

: (...Somehow, they're even less comfortable than the chairs in the lobby.)
: (Is it some sort of productivity trick? Maybe management doesn't like long breaks.)

I'm sorry, but the mental image of Alice procrastinating the meeting by rating the comfort of the lobby chairs is really funny to me for some reason.

Speaking of which...

Let's get this show on the road, shall we?

: "Also in attendance is Alice Shinki, whose help revealed the source of the attack."
: "Ehehe..."
: "Are the Black Navis a new generation of ROM NetNavis?"
: "No... A result of a virus breeding program?"

Both are good guesses! However...

: "...Invaders from Beyondard."

Music: Stop

Come again?

: "Please elaborate. Beyondard?"
: "Beyondard is a dimension whose existence was only known to select organizations."

Music: Incident!

Oh hey, finally an explanation for what Beyondard actually is, now that it's been hinted at a couple times.

: "A parallel world... Like something out of a movie."
: "It does indeed seem like fiction, especially if this is the first you've heard of it."
: "But Beyondard certainly exists."
: "The Black Navis we faced are from a Beyondard tribe of cannibals."
: "It seems that we're up against the monsters of another world."

: "Of course."

Sagume, are the dramatic one liners really necessary?

: Dramatic one liners are always necessary.

: "Do you mean to say... This raid was led by a person from our world?"
: "Not a person, but persons."
: "And there's only one group who would do such a thing."
: "...ROM."
: "Yes."
: I was going to draw out the reveal a little longer, but sure, spoil my fun why don't you.

: "However, their headquarters and sources of funding are still unclear..."
: "Determining these facts has now become our top priority."

You'd think Tenshi's information might've helped with that, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume she only ever contacted them online, and as such didn't actually have much useful information in the first place.

The same goes for Medicine, who didn't actually have a NetOp to begin with.

: "We can't be reactive in this fight."
: "Shutting down ROM takes precedence."

It probably doesn't help that, barring Shanghai, the NetAgents need to fight at a 10-to-1 ratio to have a fair fight against the invaders. Playing defensively really isn't sustainable for us!

: "Meeting adjourned!"

Music: Main Center

: "Oh, I totally get you. Fighting against another world, huh?"

Between all of her dramatic one liners, and this line... I'm pretty sure Sagume's actually excited by all of this, the dork. :allears:

: "Haah... What a dependable Navi."
: "I'll call you if we find anything we could use your help with."
: "...And here's your reward for helping with the Black Navis."

:toot:

: "Let's head home. That was a long meeting."
: "See you later, Ms. Sagume."
: "Seeya."

We can leave once I'm done talking to everyone/rifling through their belongings.

: "That's all we've gathered, though..."

On a side note, Sagume's blink animation might just win the award for the smuggest one yet.

: (Compared to the ones at school, they're in beautiful high definition.)
: (Of course, you can jack in.)

Of course. It's a new area, after all!

Music: Internet

: "IF SOMEONE FORGETS IT AT A BAR, THEY'LL BE IN BIG TROUBLE!"

Oh god, if the NetAgents are analogous to a more militarized Scilab... does that mean in this universe, the computers were made by Apple? :gonk:

: "...ZZZ..."

D'aww, Sprites. :kimchi:

Off in the corner, there's a BMD with what I believe is the largest HP AddOn in the game? Of course, I thought the same when I found the +200 one in the Shrine Comp, but this one wasn't actually listed in my guide or my notes.

Music: VS. Virus

There's also two new viruses! The first of which is Flire, which probably had a much less groan-inducing pun for a name in Japanese.

It's Okuu again! Except in virus form, this time. Which pretty much confirms that FlaMeow was based on O'Rin, even with her appearance as Satori's Navi.

Flire's attack pattern is kinda weird, as far as attacks go. They shoot a fireball out which stops either at three panels away from them, or as soon as it's within one panel away from you (either straight or diagonal), before exploding in an X-shape.

Which means the best way to not get hit is to stand directly in front of their shots. :haw:

Their chip does the same thing, but I find it annoyingly hard to aim. Later versions explode in a 3x3 burst, so they're a bit easier to use.

The other virus in her is EvilEyeΩ, which is notable for the fact that ChrgCan3 is actually something I'd classify as a situationally good chip. Not something I'd use on bosses, personally, but there's a fair amount of stationary or slow viruses that 300 damage is pretty attractive.

Anyways, there's nothing else left for us here, so we may as well head on home. Much like that Sprite, attempting to pay attention during a meeting is enough to make Shanghai fall asleep, apparently.

Music: In Room

On the way home, I checked to see if Shinki had any new dialogue about our Secret NetAgent Meeting, and... nope.

She kinda gets forgotten about dialogue-wise until the postgame, unfortunately.

As we enter Alice's room, her PET goes off.

: "Ah, let's see... From Henchie?"

Hmm?

: "Please come to where we ran into each other in Undernet 2."
: "Something only for me?"
: "We'll have to head to Undernet 2 to find out."
: "Let's get on the Net then."

Huh. Wonder what's going on with Henchie?

Music: Undernet

These warp points will never not be the most convenient thing. It honestly makes it a little hard to go back to the original games at times.

: "What's so secret that we had to meet here, huh?"

It should be noted that Henchie normally hangs out in the Petting Zoo, but will only talk about this if you come here. Why all the secrecy, Henchie?

: "I might have seen something like it before."
: "...What?"

:monocle:

: "When you got chased by viruses?"
: "Before that. We fought over 'Key.bat'."
: "Oh, that was you?"

Shanghai's recruited enough goons at gunpoint that "we first met when you decided to kick my rear end" doesn't even rate as memorable. :allears:

: "Back then, the reason I was looking for 'Key.bat'..."
: "Was because I received a request from Border Concern."
: "The company with the big office in Central City?"

The one headed by Yukari? No, surely not. Her mugshot wasn't vaguely sinister at all, why would she be up to something shady?

...Well, okay, maybe she's a little sinister.

: "It was an under-the-table deal that they didn't want anybody to know about."
: "But 'Key.bat'... When I went to turn it in, I saw a gate a lot like the one we destroyed..."
: "...A secret project in the Border Concern servers."
: "Turns out the only reason I was allowed to see it was because they never meant to let me go."
: "So they set viruses on you..."

: "I don't know... That's awfully weak evidence to break into a company's servers..."
: "That's why we're only investigating."

As everyone knows, Breaking and Entering is perfectly legal so long as you don't actually take anything. :pseudo:

: "Oh? Usually you would be a bit more hesitant."
: "During the incident, I saw a lot of Navis suffering..."
: "If there's even a change we find out who was responsible, we should chase it down!"
: "Alice..."
: "I understand, let's go check it out."

By "suffering" do you mean "getting violently murdered deleted"?

: "It might tip off Border Concern."
: "Where do we start, then?"
: "The phone in front of their office should connect to their company intranet."
: "That will at least get us started, so let's head over there."
: "Understood."

Shanghai has lots of experience hacking into protected servers, so this should be a piece of cake.

...You know, that's probably another good reason to not have the NetAgents get involved just yet. What they don't know won't hurt 'em!

Seeya, Henchie!

Music: Central City

: (I'm not brave enough to get in the middle of that.)

Clandestinely hacking into a company's servers? No problem. Walking through a crowded work environment? Scary.

...Yeah, no, that makes perfect sense, honestly.

: "Why it's outside, nobody knows..."

Don't be silly. Of course the visitor's phone is outside, where else would they put the phonebox? :v:

: (A long time ago, there were a lot of these around that anyone could use.)
: (But they're much more uncommon today, after the rise of cellphones.)
: (I can also jack in.)

Music: Internet

:ohdear:

: "They... noticed us!"
: "Where did they take Alice to..."
: "They took her to the Border Concern building!"

Wellp, our objective has officially changed. We're not here for intelligence anymore, we're here to save Alice and destroy everything that gets in our way. :black101:

As usual, without Alice, our options are a bit more restricted that normal.

: "Oh...? Even for a lady like me...?"
: "Maybe it's closed to the public, but maybe we could go off somewhere private...?"

This will never work.

: "Teehee... Get over here... big boy."
: "That is, if you're man enough to... come."
: "G-Gulp!"

...I can't believe that actually worked.

: "A-Ah!"
: "Finally! What a clown!"

The screen shakes several times while the sound effects for a sword, gunshot, and explosion play in the background.

So, yes, Shanghai did just kill him.

: "Reisen?! How did you-?"
: "I came in to perform some questioning, and a robot attacked from my blind spot."
: "It must have been a specially designed combat robot."

Right, right, sure.

: I'm not even going to dignify that with a response.
: "Yorihime escaped into their servers, but they isolated the terminal she was in."
: "They overlooked one of my concealed weapons, but it is too small caliber to break out."
: "Additionally, this lock is electronic and cannot be picked."
: "Yorihime would have been able to disable the lock, but..."

Welcome to our next dungeon, the Border Concern Company Servers! I know I've said this about all the dungeons so far, but you should definitely listen to the music that plays here, because it's excellent.

: "I should have some minions around this place..."

On the one hand, this is incredibly convenient, but on the other, can you really say it's out of character for her to have recruited employees from big tech companies to do a little bit of insider trading? :v:

It's not like she's unfamiliar with the concept, after all:

Part 7 posted:

: "GOOD! PLEASE DO YOUR BEST!"

This Sprite seems nice. Seems kind of a shame to lie to her, though.

: "No."
: "WHAT? TRESSPASSER! CALL THE AUTOROIDS!"

Despite saying as much, she doesn't actually call any Autoroids. This is why you don't leave Sprites in charge of security!

Anyways - here's the map of this place. It's pretty straightforward, as dungeons go. Despite the cameras everywhere, they're just set dressing. This isn't a stealth mission.

Grabbing this BMD off to the side before heading out - if they didn't want people to steal their stuff, they should've hired stronger guards.

As for this guy...

: "Good, I knew I had a loyal servant somewhere in here."
: "What?! Miss Alice has been trapped in the basement?"
: "The dungeon control systems are just ahead, but they're protected by security."

Hang on. It's gotta be several kinds of illegal for a corporate office to have dungeons built into them, right? Nobody thought that was suspicious during construction?

: "When entering the area, it will ask for a password."
: "Then step on the numbers on the floor in order, within the time limit."
: "If the wrong number is input or the time limit expires, an Autoroid will be dispatched."
: "However, defeating the Autoroid will also unlock the system, so do as you like."

So even if you screw up, it's not the end of the world. Nor is the game rude enough to punt you back to the start of the area or anything like that.

: "The numbers may be dice faces or Han numerals, so it might not be that simple."

By "Han numerals", he means the kanji for numbers in Japanese. IE: 一, 二, 三, 四, 五, 六, 七, 八, and 九. The first three are self explanatory even if you don't know them, but the rest aren't so kind. Thankfully there's generally context clues to figure out what's what, but the time limits aren't exactly generous. The first time I played, I set off half the alarms in this place!

...Thankfully, this time, I actually have a rudimentary understanding of Japanese! :eng101:

It starts off pretty easy though. The mixing and matching of tiles doesn't come till later.

Easy peasy.

This BMD contains a chip for LeafWav3 H, not that we can actually edit it into the folder at the moment.

We'll be back to take care of this floor later, for now, we've got some dungeon security to smash. Into the basement!

Once again, it's basically a straight path to the end.

Mine. I won't ever use it, but it's mine nonetheless!

Second layer of security is where the Han numerals start, and you can kinda see what I mean by the game giving context clues if you don't know them offhand?

As in, 1 through 3 are easy, and by that point, 4 and 5 are just a matter of continuing to move in the same direction, like you're drawing a Z on the ground.

Next!

This BMD only has 3000z in it, no big deal.

Ah, finally, we're getting somewhere.

: "This must be where they're keeping Alice!"
: "All that's left is blowing these guys to bits!"

Music: VS. Tournament

Combat Routine: Set.

Execute. :fuckoff:

: "I was able to connect to your phone through the internal wireless network."
: "We can operate now! Are you alright, Alice?"
: "I'm fine!"

: "You hurt Alice, and you deal with me!"

Shanghai's plan is simple: attack.

: "How fortuitous. I must speak to the president myself, as well."
: "Are you coming to help us, Reisen?"
: "The series of actions this company has taken requires further investigation."
: "We do not have time to call for reinforcements."
: "You will require aid to bypass the robots on the way to the president's office."

: "I'll do what I can from the company's servers."
: "Be careful, Shanghai. You won't be able to jack out."
: "Move out!"
: "Yeah!"

Huh, previously in Battle Network when they did the whole "Lan separated from Megaman" thing, you weren't able to use any chips. This seems way more tolerable in comparison! Eh... they're a step above regular navi fights, but they're not that bad, really. At this point in the game, you should be able to deal with them without much hassle. Even if you decided to purposely try to softlock by switching to a really lovely folder beforehand and saving, you could theoretically slowly beat them with charged shots - they don't have any way to heal themselves.
