You'll have better luck at Cigar Auctioneer if you're looking to just buy RoS. I've only seen Southern Draw samplers on Cigar Bid.

I've picked pipe smoking back up after a few years and I found an old baggie of one of my favorite blends that's in surprisingly good shape. Used to be the only place you could get pipe tobacco around here was a porn/cigar/sports merch store and nothing they had was really well labeled.

They had a lot of stokkebye stuff but I think this one might be sutliff, it's only ever just been labeled "Balkan no. 2." It's real heavy on Latakia compared to everything else I've smoked. The good news is that I'm in the 21st century and can buy tins of actual pipe tobacco online, what's a good blend that's heavy on Latakia?

Also do you guys have any recos on pipes? I've got a couple of mid range estates, but I finally make enough that I can entertain the thought of treating myself to something nice that wasn't smoked by a dead guy

There have been boxes of RoS Toros on freefall pretty consistently lately. Got one not all that long ago.

Do they have any good blends that are heavy on Latakia? And do you know if any good pipes that might not have the name recognition of a Peterson but still deliver worthwhile craftsmanship in the sub ~$150 range?

So last night I did my typical Kenning Fuckup™ and checked Famous Smoke just to see what was going on and I saw they were having a 20% off orders over $100 Memorial Day sale. Queue me picking up an 18 box of La Aurora Preferidos Sapphire robustos to qualify for the sale, and a 6x6 pack of tins of Padron Corticos, which their 4 1/2 x 35 petite corona. With the 20% off the Padrons ended up being $3/ea, which is a goddamn deal in my book. I'm so excited for these to show up.

I'm suuuuper interested in the other vitolas. The wrapper ratio on the Travailleur hits so right, I might be interested in hunting down a LAT46.

Super worth a shot for anyone imo. I'm already hankering for another.

https://www.tobaccoreviews.com/ has an incredibly robust search tool for finding blends. If you create an account (it's free) you can save them to your profile as well.

Also, search for Jiminks (https://www.tobaccoreviews.com/Search?ReviewedBy=Jiminks) and you get a very comprehensive list of reviews from the most prolific pipe tobacco reviewer around (super nice and very knowledgeable dude who was on another forum I frequented).

The aforementioned smokingpipes.com is the best place I've found to just browse pipes (not the cheapest place to buy them though).

A quick search shows 260 options regarding Latakia blends.

Peterson and Stanwell are in there between 100-125.

Really in the sub $150 range you’re looking at Peterson and Savinelli primarily for things that are easy to find. There are a lot of online pipe makers, but you have to buy from them and they vary drastically in price.

I have a Moonshine and a Neerup that I adore and both were sub $150. Also, love Stanwell, but they seem harder to find if you're in the US.

I tried to smoke a QdO 54 yesterday but the burn issues were so bad I ended up just tossing it. I smoked a SLR Regios today which was decent but mostly tasted like a cigar, earth/tobacco. I didn't get any of the cool flavors from the reviews I read after.

I had a similar bad burn experience with a Curivari Seleccion Privada last night - kept running down one side no matter how much I touched it up, and the draw was overly open and didn't really give much smoke - I may try another one again soon, because Curivari makes some good stuff, but drat that one was disappointing. I'll probably go for a smaller ring gauge next time though - I'm getting pretty close to swearing off anything over 54, and even on 54, it's better as a box press.

Lyon

It was mostly a lack of burning/smoke production. I tried the PerfecDraw, I relit/touched up the cigar, eventually I clipped it and tried to start “fresh” but still a terrible burn and draw. I’m going to dry box the next one when I try it.

54 is my cut off as well for anything I’m purchasing more than one of and ideally I prefer 52 or less.

The

Nubs got me smoking bigger rings. I tried every one as soon as they were on the Tinderbox’s shelves (except the Dub, which I tried later), and really enjoyed the size. So I’ve also been trending up in RG as I smoke a cigar two or three times a week and often for two+ hours. Big Rings are good for that, too (I rarely smoke my pipe in pubic since Covid, although I do smoke it 2x a day every day on the deck).

Also, anybody got any recommendations for Cuban cigars? I want to get him a box for Father’s Day, but don’t have the budget for Cohibas. I’ve not tried a non-American brand for years, so new medium smokes would be great, but I do know coming from European sellers there is a premium as well as shipping.

HUP mag 46 perfect in every way IMO. Fresh ones are smoking well IME.

Bolivar PC for a petite corona size

HDM petite robusto for a nub size.

R&J short Churchill’s for robusto size

R&j Cazzadores for lonsdale

Smoked a Rocky Patel Vintage 1979 robusto the other day with my buddies. We all agreed that it's the best of the Vintage series we've had so far, which is appropriate since it's the more premium release. The first one I smoked was a tad on the dry side, but this one had a few extra weeks in the humidor and it was perfect. Smell of the foot was hay and barnyard with a bit of cocoa, the wrapper smelled like cocoa and cinnamon, and the dry pull was all chocolate. It sparked up beautifully with lots of smoke production, and the flavor was a very nice mix of leather, fresh wood, a subtle sort of chocolate/caramel thing that didn't get too sweet, and (especially near the end) plenty of the Cameroon wrapper perfume of musk and sandalwood. It was also a perfectly-timed smoke, clocking in at just around an hour fifteen.

The only issue I had was a bit of wandering on the burn, which required some touching up but didn't really mess with the smoking experience. My buddy had some draw issues on his, and had to use the PerfecDraw. You can get a 15 box of these on Cigar Bid for under $60, and it's absolutely worthwhile if you like Cameroon wrappers.

NewFatMike
Jun 11, 2015

Very good! I hadn't heard of the 1979 vintage before, I'll keep an eye out for it.

Having my last Travailleur, and these are some of my favorite petite coronas (short panetela at this size?), and the Cracker Crumbs scratch a real similar itch to the Papas Fritas. I'll pick up another fiver of these this weekend and maybe a LAT54 or 46 just to try the different sizes.

The last veneers are gluing up now, so my 3 modified humidor drawers are about done! To complete the upgrade, I designed and 3D printed a hygrometer clip to keep him stable:

That's not reflective of the real stats, the hygrometer was still settling.
