Yeahhhh you really should never put yourself into a position where this is likely. Ratbite fever is no joke.

Well, it was scoop them up to save their lives, or brutally stomp them to death. I didn't want to put poison out or get some kind of trap and just hope it catches them, nor was the cat going to do anything about them.

Since I was a kid I have caught mice barehanded a number of times, and don't recall ever being bitten. Had to scrub my hands afterward due to seeing tiny mites crawling off the mice, but never bitten.

It's not that kind of test.
I spotted a leucistic sparrow the other day but didn't get my phone out in time which is a shame as that was a first.

Nothing else all that exciting lately, but I did find some tiny bird bones while tilling the garden and I escorted a crab spider out of the kitchen the other day.

This large, buzzy creature sat on my arm for half a minute while I took pictures of it and was chill enough throughout that it didn't occur to me until trying to google it later that it might be a horsefly.

Yup, it's a horsefly.

Or a "stout," if you live in the island of Newfoundland.

The huge horseflies rarely bite people, they are specialized in feeding on large animals like cattle and horses.

Male https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phidippus_regius Regal Jumping Spider. Not sure if they range as far as northern Indiana. He might have hitched a ride in a box as he was running around our warehouse. Super chill, one of my coworkers just coaxed him onto a hand and found him a nice shelf to relax on. Little dude was a healthy half inch long or so.

My first thought was they might be wood ants but I think you are right about the carpenter ants

Washington State Park, about an hour south of St. Louis, but all that stuff is pretty common and found within 50' of the park road. The Abbot's Sphinx was the only one I was surprised to see.

that's a male luna moth. he's either resting, or exhausted and about to die. if he's been there for an entire day, probably the latter.

Saw a luna moth crawling around with tiny, tiny little wings. I assume that's some sort of defect in metamorphosis rather than them waiting to unfurl? I took pics but probably won't post since it's a little tragic.

It’s either very fresh and looking for a perch to swell up on, or yeah something went wrong
