Buick's whole thing was/is to be a budget luxury brand, something with 3/4 of the amenities of a Cadillac at like 2/3 the price. They also tended to stick performance engines in some of the higher trim levels as well. '60s Skylarks were a decent alternative if you couldn't get a GTO, Olds 442 or Dodge Charger. The Grand National is a legendary car even if its specs nowadays are kind of middling. '90s Roadmasters are popular with enthusiasts because you can get something with an LS engine in the body of a cheap land yacht. At the same time all of GM's problems, including Cadillac's own downturn, piled onto the unfortunately earned reputation of being mainly for old people, really did a number on them over the past 30 years.

lol reminds me of a thing one of the RLM dudes said in an episode of Best of The Worst featuring a college student from like 1996 rapping about table manners while dressed as like George Washington for some old lady’s straight-to-VHS public access finishing school

he said something like “that guy’s gotta be in his forties now. He’s probably got two kids, I promise you they’ve never seen this.....Imagine showing up to this guy’s funeral one day and just wordlessly playing this video”

I remember Chris Slate from Game Players. There was a brief bit of time where Game Players was a fairly good read instead of being a poor man's EGM.

Though I think they got tossed into riot grrrl stuff rather than brit pop from what I remember.

video for Hypocrite spun my teenager brain round backwards in my skull. she seemed so loving cool. miki is pretty active on twitter these days and posts all kinds of cool stories from back in the day.

this came out in 1990 so it qualifies. i'm still kind of in love with her dress in this one.

My first car was a 1998 Chevy Lumina. It wasn't really my choice, but my parents pushed me into it.

If you wanted to change the battery on that big white turd, you had to remove the windshield washer fluid reservoir. It wasn't a terrible operation, but it's such a :wtc: design choice.
Don't forget the big cross-brace that runs over top of the reservoir!
My wife has a 1997 Lumina that deserves to get crushed but she's still holding onto the idea of it.

What a hateful car. I'd rather slam my dick in a window than ever work on one of those again.

Did you read it before or after you learned that the author was convicted for possession of the wrong kind of pornography?

I read it in the 90s and then went back to it after that case broke, looking at it through that lens, and good grief, the man's issues are right there on the page.

The rumor was Malibu went under because of the game studio and then was acquired by Marvel for their digital printing setup.

Surprised we haven't seen a remaining of it yet.

on the subject of 90s comics, I just saw this on an ad* in a 1993 issue of Wizard:

I think Pastry's post above yours helps answer part of that... plus seriously who on Earth even remember Malibu?

I legitimately saw the Ultraforce intro once in the 90s at 0430 am and thought I hallucinated it for 20 years before some goon found it after I described it. There's only the flimsiest possible whiff of an asshair of "brand recognition" that some entertainment suit could latch onto for risk mitigation in a relaunch, and Marvel as a whole is doing pretty well so why dig up that blighted corner? Every kingdom has to have some badlands.

The rumor was that the IP has payout requirements that Marvel didn't want to pay out. But Joe Quesada denied this and said the real reason would require airing dirty laundry. So it's possible Marvel is being cheap or there is some sort of #MeToo thing at Malibu that Marvel would prefer to keep buried.
