Has there ever been a single franchise that suffered from such severe diminishing returns as Jurassic Park? It's almost asymptotic at this point how bad these movies are getting. Even Alien and Terminator seem to have its occasional bright spots and up and downs. The franchise consists of a single good movie and 5 (?) awful sequels.

I think we should call the Avengers.

Jaws

I guess Hellraiser managed at least one good sequel, but everything past that is easily worse than even the worst Jurassic Park ripoff.

No, because 25% of all Jaws films are good, whereas only 16% of all JP movies are any good, and they've been making JP movies for over a quarter of a century now. The jaws franchise started and finished within 12 years and hasn't reared its ugly head in my lifetime.

I don't think 16% is accurate, unless you're only allowing for whole movies and not parts. JP2 and JP3 should at least get points for great effects and animatronics, and JP2 has the trailer sequence which stands up to any sequence from the first film. JP3 should also get at least a couple points for being as good as it is despite its script being thrown out 3 weeks before shooting and started over from scratch.

I hear a lot of people like Camp Cretaceous and talk about it in the same league as Clone Wars as something that works for adults and carves out its own identity apart from the films, but I'm just not sure I can bring myself to watch it. At least the prequels were interesting bases to start from, if rather flawed. CC is just playing in a toybox filled with garbage.

e: While we're talking about this, I just thought I'd throw out my pet idea that if Vince Vaughn's character had been cut from The Lost World and his story was given to Sarah Harding, it would have vastly improved the film. Malcolm's girlfriend being an ecoterrorist who went over Malcolm's head to destroy InGen's corporate machinations would have given the film some extremely necessary life.

Curious as to which sequel you are referring to here, because they are all extremely bad in very different ways. I guess probably 2, but that movie sucks rear end too, it just has some nice matte paintings.

I don’t know. I watched JP2 for the first time in my adult life a few years back, and it struck me how much the trailer scene is just a rehash of the T-Rex scene from JP1. It’s still extremely well done but it’s more or less choreographed the same.

its a wonderful escalation sequence, a little mean (the bald dude did not deserve that, as opposed to the lawyer who did by virtue of being a coward and abandoning the kids) and a critical lessons that Spielberg (and I imagine Critchton) kept hammering: stop loving with nature.

Does it immediately get lit the gently caress up by depleted uranium rounds turning it's skull into an exploding melon, because this is the 21st century and a T-rex isn't exactly stealth?

JP3 is much better than I think people give it credit for. It's solid "sunday afternoon on TNT" fare, and there are hints of some more interesting character stuff there that obviously doesn't go anywhere but on the whole it's more entertaining than any of the recent series entries. That might have more to do with Sam Neill being the main character instead of Pratt though.

I like your theory about JP2, that would've made for a much better film albeit one that would be weirdly reminiscent of Children of Men given Julianne Moore's role in both.

JP3 is a perfect example of what a podcast I listen to, We Hate Movies, calls a Hangover Movie. Something to turn on in the late morning, early afternoon when you don't want anything too heavy, just something to have on in the background to pay a little attention to and enjoy at a surface level. It's fun, but not great, and doesn't ask too much of its audience. Its biggest problem is that it doesn't have enough people for the dinos to eat, but whatever, it has flying dinos and they're awesome.

JP2 is more frustrating, because there's a great movie hidden somewhere in there, but it never quite pulls it off. It was Spielberg's first movie after a 4 year break after making Schindler's List and the first Jurassic Park, and he's a little rusty making blockbusters, and it shows. For every great scene like the raptors in the tall grass, there's the gymnastics take down bullshit. He also didn't allow his actors to rehearse, saying he wanted, "to capture the actors when they taste the words for the first time, when they look at each other for the first time", which is certainly a choice. He wasn't able to use his usual cinematographer, and the replacement made everything look way darker. Wikipedia even has this bit about how disappointed he was with the movie, and why:

Wikipedia posted:

Spielberg said that during production he became increasingly disenchanted with the film, stating, "I beat myself up... growing more and more impatient with myself... It made me wistful about doing a talking picture, because sometimes I got the feeling I was just making this big silent-roar movie... I found myself saying, 'Is that all there is? It's not enough for me.'" Spielberg regretted that the film characters are aware they are going to an island of dinosaurs, unlike the previous film. Spielberg later said that he knows a major reason why his sequels tend to not live up to the quality of his original films: "My sequels aren't as good as my originals because I go onto every sequel I've made and I'm too confident. This movie made a ka-zillion dollars, which justifies the sequel, so I come in like it's going to be a slam dunk and I wind up making an inferior movie to the one before. I'm talking about The Lost World and Jurassic Park."
