I know a couple of ASOIAF superfans who help maintain GOT websites, do podcasts, run twitter accounts all devoted to this series and it seems like today was the day that a lot of them finally gave up the ghost. Marking the 10 year anniversary of the last book being published seemed to finally bring home the reality that GRRM has no pages, will probably never finish another book (let alone 2), so on and so forth. Almost all of them have pretty much written off the prequel series as well, which bodes ill for the continued success of the IP in any form.

Really kind of sad, all things considered. Imagine how crazy people would've gone if GRRM had announced a release date for the last book today.

I think it worked out well for Jason Momoa. Some of the kids quit acting altogether iirc, and the rest seem to be living their best b-list life.

Which is a good thing, the acting really wasn't the problem in the end.

Jorah says that, basically, if the Dothraki invaded and the Westerosi just holed up in the castles they wouldn't know what to do, but that Robert was too stupid to not fight them. Also a plan like that is fine in theory, but if Highgarden decides to hail the Dothraki as the new kings of the 7 kingdoms, and you are hiding in King's Landing, not a lot you can do about it.

The show had Robert explaining that if the Dothraki invaded the city would probably be safe behind the walls, but the Dothraki would then loot and burn every farm and village around. And a king that hides behind his walls while that happens is going to be a really unpopular king.

Ehh. The Watch is severely dumb. The North is well established to be loving massive (as much land as all the other realms conbimed!), and thinly peopled. This organization is regularly putting weapons, armor and horses worth years of the average peasant or even craftsman's income in the hand of criminals and malcontents. All they have to do is wait for a task a day or two away, bolt, steal some different clothes from a farmstead and either board a ship or stay off the Kingsroad.

To be fair, that's actually addressed in the books and show. Jon Snow for example is shown as being as safe on the wall as a new guy in prison. They talk about how no noble families except the Starks are sending people to wall and how degenerate the watch has become.

Here's the thing though, we know very little about how the testosterone that the body naturally produces correlates with physical strength. Studies are all over the place and some even indicates that a high level of natural testosterone might even make you less strong.

Well, no. There's more to come. Another book as big as this one.

I did not forget to write about the other characters. Far from it. I wrote lots about them. Pages and pages and pages. Chapters and more chapters. I was still writing when it dawned on me that the book had become too big to publish in a single volume . . . and I wasn't close to finished yet. To tell all of the story that I wanted to tell, I was going to have to cut the book in two.

The simplest way to do that would have been to take what I had, chop it in half around the middle, and end with "To Be Continued ." The more I thought about that, however, the more I felt that the readers would be better served by a book that told all the story for half the characters, rather than half the story for all the characters. So that's the route I chose to take.

Tyrion, Jaime, Dany, Barristan and Jorah, Victarion, and all the rest of the characters you love or love to hate will be along next year (I devoutly hope) in A List of Lands, which will focus on events in Essos, just as the present book focused on Westeros.

I doubt any will match someone like Clooney in terms of jumping from hit TV show to mainstream movie stardom but most of them seem to be doing fine. Pablo Pascal comes to mind as someone whose career has taken off but I guess he was already kind of on the ascent even before playing Oberyn.

The rest of the main cast seem to be taking some time off or at least gradually easing back into other roles, but they've got piles of money to tide them over while they do so.

typically physical strength is a solid second to discipline and courage in formation fighting anyway. the spartans weren't feared because they were all ripped, they were feared because their big blocks of spear-toting guys were more mobile than the norm - the unsullied have nowhere worthwhile to go, and are unified by shared trauma and very hard training. it's a workable fantasy conceit imo, even if you'd expect them to at least go through puberty before getting cut (do not tell me if this is specified in the text idgaf).

Side note, although the Spartans were feared due to formation training and discipline (and perhaps even more because of their propaganda) rather than physical prowess, like all the other upper-class Greeks in phalanxes opposing them, they probably were pretty ripped. Classical Greek culture had a bit of an obsession with exercise and the male form.

Sparta was also much more of a paper tiger than popular history and culture would have you believe.
But yeah. It's more the fact they are cut while prepubescent, unless I'm wildly misremembering, that sticks in my craw.

Also to be fair while most of the show actors have had careers that went nowhere since being on/in the show, it's also worth noting that most of the show actors who were really popular; Danny, Sansa, and bafflingly Arya who went from amazing in the early seasons to terrible in the later - were generally at best the weaker actors on the show, and at worst outright terrible.

Nothing against her as a person, but Emilia Clarke is not a good actress. Add unto that fact she was miscast as Sarah Conner, and that even if they had brought back Linda Hamilton through a time machine that movie was still a mess anyway, and yeah. It's just the perfect storm of bad decisions around most of the cast's attempts to do bigger and better things since the show ended/winded down.

Gonna rep Christian Cameron again here for his excellent (and, given how :spergin: he is as an author, probably as true to life as it's possible to be given how little factual knowledge we actually have about the era) portrayal of the Spartans in his Long War series. They were weird even by the standards of the times, and even more weird from a modern perspective.
