Terrance Shannon announced that he was returning to Texas Tech for his 3rd season. He and Kevin McCullar are Tech's biggest two names locally, along with Jace Jung, and are likely in line for some decent endorsement deals in the NIL era.

And then there's Master P's kid, an incoming freshman for Tennessee State, who signed a $2 million endorsement deal for a large webdev tech agency.

Team USA beat Canada in the U19 semi-finals today, Canada hit a late 3 to get it back to 6 at 92-86. They led for a bit in the 3rd before USA pushed it to double digits in the 4th.

Zach Edey has been killing it for Canada, averaging 16/15 while shooting 58%. Sadly, that's pretty much his free throw percentage too.

For USA they've been led by Chet Holmgren and Kenneth Lofton Jr (no relation). Lofton Jr is going to put up monster numbers at La Tech this year. Jalen Ivey was leading the team in scoring early on, but his numbers have slipped the last few rounds. He's been good on the drive, but his 3 is still very unreliable.

Caleb Furst is a 3rd Purdue guy in the tournament, he's been ok in spot minutes for USA. He's been efficient in his scoring and rebounds at a decent rate but has been pushed around on defense a bit.

Canada beat Serbia 101-92 to get bronze in the FIBA U19. Arizona's Bennedict Richard Felder Mathurin let the way with 31 on 11/15 shooting and hit 9/10 free throws. Ryan Nembhard from Creighton had 21 and Purdue's Zach Edey had a not great 12 points on 13 shots, but pulled down 12 boards and blocked 5.

USA plays France in 5 minutes for the gold, it'll be live on ESPN+, the replay might be on YouTube later.

France led by 5 going into the 4th but USA wins 83-81. Lofton Jr and Ivey had 16 points each, Lofton, TCU's Micheal Miles, and Tennessee's Michael Miles all had 7 rebounds.

Texas Tech lands Oral Roberts transfer Kevin Obanor, a 6'8" F with range all the way out to the 3 point line. High volume/efficiency guy.

There's one more spot on the 13-man thanks to covid eligibility rules, and Tech is in on one more guy (that we know of) Alabama transfer Jaden Shackelford with a final 3 of Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Tech.

Tech's roster next year is looking pretty salty, just a notch below that of Kansas and Baylor in the Big XII. If Adams can coach em up, the season could be pretty interesting.

Smalls
Clarence Nadolny - 1.8ppg
Mylik Wilson - 12.9ppg

Middles
Terrence Shannon, Jr. - 12.9ppg
Kevin McCullar - 10.4ppg
Chibuzo Agbo, Jr. - 2.0ppg
KJ Allen - JC
Sardaar Calhoun - 5.3ppg
Davion Warren - 21.2ppg
Adonis Arms - 10.5ppg

Bigs
Kevin Obanor - 18.7ppg
Daniel Batcho - RS
Marcus Santos-Silva - 8.3ppg
Bryson Williams - 15.1ppg

The offense is going to be very different than Beard's: they'll be playing fast with green lights to shoot. Recruiting wise, he's focusing on offensive recruits to try to teach defense rather than defensive players to try to teach how to shoot. I'm expecting them to platoon heavily and play a lot of press defense, swapping lineups of small-mid-big between groups of 1-2-2, 1-3-1, and 0-4-1 based on matchup and who has the hot hand. Honestly, with as good as Obanor and Williams are, I would not be surprised to see them on the court together for 20 minutes/game and each getting another 10 with another big or a small-ball lineup. Don't think you'll ever see us come onto the court without at least 1 of the 4 bigs, either.

Also expecting them to keep at least 2 3 point shooters on the floor the whole time, more if Shannon, Arms, and Agbo take steps forward in their 3pt % and volume. Davion Warren will be another interesting player to see, as he's a high volume scorer, but not necessarily a high efficiency player. With the 3 high-efficiency bigs as well as efficient drivers in Shannon, McCullar, and Wilson, he'll be the one guy asked to slow down, take better shots, and distribute when it's not there.

They're a fringe NCAA team, ranked #57 right now in the Bart Torvik projections, mainly because they lost Myles Johnson who had the fifth best defensive rating of any major conference player in the country last year. Right now Rutgers is projected ninth in the Big Ten, mainly because the top of the conference is so loaded

Basically, if center Cliff Omoruyi and wing Jaden Jones are good contributors, they're a NCAA team, if not, they aren't. They lost Johnson, Jacob Young (who had a great season), and Montez Mathis (a solid 3 and D wing who lost playing time to a defensive specialist.)

There's a bunch of freshmen who didn't play much or redshirted like Jones and Omoruyi, Aundrae Hyatt comes in from LSU to replace Mathis, and Paul Mulcahy is going to see a lot more minutes with Young gone. I guess maybe the other x-factor is Harper and Baker were hurt a lot of the year.

They won't be #57 when RH2 and Geo coming back is factored into that but the main issue is that they really had no freshmen show anything last year and they are going to miss Young more than people think. You know anything about Agee?

Local paper has posted what they think is Evansville's OOC schedule and almost all of it is against Ohio Valley Conference (despite Evv being in the Missouri Valley Conference) schools. Belmont (twice), Tenn Tech, Eastern IL, SEMO, And UT-Martin. Only non OVC are Cincinnati, SMU and IuPuI. Kinda suspicious

I'm not sure how the school is hanging on. They're building a new residence hall somehow, but they are cutting acedemic programs, and nearly dumped a ton more if not for a student and faculty revolt. They haven't even seen the fallout from the Title IX lawsuits from the McCarty mess.

Every single year the Ivy League takes a break from fucking up the world through its various alumni to fuck up everyone's bracket instead.
Division 1 college athletics has been such an enormous drain on so many schools, and generally they get exempted from cuts because they'll claim that donor gifts depend on keeping sports alive, even though the donors in question do not remotely donate enough to make up the shortfall. So it goes to academic cuts, which gut the whole reason for having a university in the first place.

Evansville cut football a long time ago so short of dropping down to D-3 there's just not many options there. Probably the only thing that will bail out schools like Evansville is a massive reinvestment in education but uh that doesn't look too likely either so

Generally nonconference games come to them and when they do trips to the mainland they knock out two nearby games Thurs-Sat and fly back. Not unlike Pac-12 scheduling.

Introducing your 2021-2022 University of Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

instagram: @hawaiibasketball

Hawaii finished 9-9 last year in the Big West, an incredibly bizarre year where they had tons of transfers in, transfers out, and had a key player opt out before the season. It's really hard to take anything away from last year because they went through COVID issues, had key losses and transfers, and their practice schedule was all over the place. Moving forward from that weird year, here's how this next season looks.

LOSSES
James Jean-Marie, PF - transferred to Portland - a transfer from University of San Diego, JJM averaged 12.2 points in his year at Hawaii. Honorable mention All Big West last year
Casdon Jardine, SF - graduated - Jardin, a grad transfer form Utah Valley, average 10.9 and 5.5 and eared honorable mention All Big West last year. Now playing professionally somewhere in the USA.
Justin Webster, SG - transferred to UNLV - sophomore co-captain, leading scorer at 12.3. Honorable mention All Big West last year.
Biwali Bayles, PG - signed professionally with Sydney Kings - Bayles is back in Australia playing professionally now, and played with Australia's under-19 team this past summer in Latvia.
Justin Hemsley, SF - graduated - Hemsley was UH's 6th/7th man off the bench.
Kameron Ng, G - transferred to University of Hawaii-Hilo
Manel Ayol, SF - signed professionally with the Bulls in NZ

ADDITIONS
Samuta Avea, SF - returning after sitting out last year - Avea took the year off during COVID. Should be a senior captain this year and be up for all Big West honors.
Kamaka Hepa, PF - grad transfer from Texas - Hepa, a top 50 recruit from Rivals.com, transfers to Hawaii with two years left to play
Jerome Desrosiers, PF - grad transfer from Princeton - should provide depth at the PF/C position for UH
Amoro Lado, SG - College of Southern Idaho JC - should provide depth at the SG position
Juan Munoz, G - Longwood University - should provide depth at guard positions
Brock Heffner, SF - high school - Heffner comes to Hawaii from Wisconsin and has a lot of experience in front of him, but may see some minutes

RETURNERS
Mate Colina, C - Colina, a senior, is a traditional back to the basket 7 footer who can hit the 3.
Junior Madut, SG/SF - Madut, a senior, is a 6'5 guard who can get to the rim and is a streaky outside shooter.
JoVon McClanahan, PG - McCanahan is a 6 foot something PG who transferred last year to UH from Junior College.
Noel Coleman, G - Coleman transferred to UH last year from University of San Diego - combo guard who can handle PG or SG.
Bernardo da Silva, PF/C - da Silva was injured almost all of last year but is an excellent rim protector defensively
Beon Riley, SF - Riley is a 6'6 sophomore who saw spot minutes last year for UH.
Zoar Nedd, SG/SF - Nedd, a walk on, earned a scholarship last year and provided spot minutes for UH.

I think that's everyone.

UH should be a decent squad this year. They have been competitive over the past few years in the Big West but could never really get over the hump in the league. Scheduling will be key, Big West schedule isn't out yet. Diamond Head Classic will be hosted in Manoa in December and UH will open with Vanderbilt. Stanford is one of the headliners of the event.

Most likely, based on last year, I would guess the starting lineup will be

PG - McLanahan, JR/Munoz, JR
SG - Madut, SR/Coleman, JR
SF - Avea, SR/Riley, SOPH/Lado, JR
PF - Hepa, JR/Desrosiers, SR
C - Colina, SR/da Silva, SOPH

Heffner may see spot minutes at the SF/stretch 4 position

I'll probably sound like a homer but Hawaii should be pretty good. If you're up and looking for a game in the middle of the night, Hawaii's games often start at 7pm local time, which is midnight EST (I think, with daylight savings). They SHOULD challenge for the Big West this year, but Irvine and Santa Barbara will be quality as always. Just excited to get people back in the Stan Sheriff Center - and if anyone makes it out here for the Diamond Head Classic, holler. I may even be able to get you tickets, heh.

Anyway, perhaps this gave everyone something to look forward to during these lazy rear end days of summer.

My advice to you is to start drinking heavily.
https://twitter.com/jaypo1961/status/1422262795454799881
Here's the story so far:
1. Howard Moore, longtime assistant coach for Wisconsin men's basketball, gets into a horrible car accident summer 2019. Alando Tucker, the Badger all-time career points leader who was in a student development position in the athletic department, agrees to fill in under short notice.
2. Kobe King leaves the program early 2020, makes a parting comment to Gard it wasn't about the strength coach using that racial word. Strength coach is fired, when it comes to light that the players that heard it informed Tucker who chose to keep it to himself.
3. Somehow, with no rhyme or reason, the team goes 9-1 and finishes with a share of the Big 10 title.
4. Pandemic.
5. Barry Alvarez announces his retirement, and Tucker is part of the search committee for the next athletic director.
6. During the entire 2020-21 season, Tucker attempts to undermine Gard in an effort to get himself promoted to head coach.
7. Part of that undermining is the leak of a closed locker room meeting between the senior class and Gard, which Tucker was suspected of releasing.
8. Tucker's not retained for this upcoming season.
9. I wish for the hutzpah of someone thinking after a year of coaching basketball at the college level thinking "Oh yeah, here's how I can get promoted." I would be unstoppable.

This is interesting because coming into the summer Colvin was at best a 2 star recruit. He's been doing pretty well on the AAU circuit and is super athletic, but not the kind of player I would expect to get a contract offer. He's 6'5 and will be a junior this fall so he has time to grow and improve, so maybe that's the kind of kid this league is targeting, good size and potential for skill growth.

Hopefully he sticks with Purdue, he's got strong ties with is father Roosevelt who played for the football team when they were good in the late 90s and his older sister is on the volleyball team.

A lot of the guys they've signed are pretty legit NBA prospects but also I don't think anyone actually knows how it's supposed to work or make money in the long term. For now at least they have a ton of start up money. In theory they're also supposed to pay college tuition for the players later if they decide to go that route instead of playing pro basketball since this would be nuking their eligibility but I guess we will see what happens.
