It seems like half the issue here is that Togashi got too ambitious, creating a plot with a ton of moving parts, then giving all those moving parts complicated powers, and then having everyone talk at length about their interpretations of the powers, where their mistakes will... you get the idea. With a weekly schedule, you'd likely get late era Bleach-style "eh, gently caress it" resolutions and things would keep moving just out of desperation to have something on the page. But with the time to try to do it right... Well, you try to do it perfect. And if you can't, you just don't release anything.

I still don't understand why Togashi didn't just end the series after the world tree bit. I mean, it was the perfect stopping point: the original impetus of the story, i.e. Gon getting to meet ant talk with his dad (which had been the driving force behind each arc so far) had been resolved; there were still a few plot threads hanging off, but those could be easily and neatly tied off (or even just ignored), instead of launching into an entirely different story arc which would require dozens if not hundreds of chapters to be completed. I mean, at that point, and considering Togashi's more and more frequent hiatuses, it was the logical choice.

Just looked it up and yes, those two do indeed reprise their roles in EZ (or at least Tia’s back as Happy, Colleen’s wiki page hasn’t been updated yet but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was her).

I don’t think I ever gave half a poo poo about Chrollo vs Hisoka because it was so obviously a foregone conclusion but in practice the entire fight being a comedy of errors from the moment Hisoka said “I’ll let you pick the time and place” culminating in Hisoka getting hosed all the way up and taking his L like a big salty baby after Frankensteining himself back together with Nen was a very worthwhile part of Hunter x Hunter.

Incidentally, I saw Red Hood spoilers and I don't think I need to spoiler tag my thoughts: The world of the series seems really super cool just looking at it and I hope they lean into that- the mangaka is a really talented artist and I feel like some of the stuff that was just in the background could be a story in its own right.

I liked this single chapter of Red Hood more than the entire rest of the story so far combined. Which I'm not sure is a good or a bad thing. Still liking Undead Unluck though, amazed how much that one's grown on me.

My main impression of Red Hood so far is I really want a game (video or tabletop) in this setting with these designs but the story and characters aren't grabbing me. It's kind of the polar opposite of Candy Flurry.

Reminder that Chad is the character whose backstory involved being given a coin by his grandfather and keeping it as a memento, going so far as to being badly beat up to protect said coin. Later he gets a power up when he learns to focus his powers through an item which holds a special significant to him: his skin. It seriously baffles me Kubo went for that instead of, you know. The coin.
