This is the earliest post I can find in the doomsday econ or trmpf threads about a mysterious virus killing people. January 19th.

So December 15th might be wishful thinking for when we realized what was happening. We've been recommending respirators since January 24th though lol we figured it out real quick.

Yeah so what exactly is the "psychological harm" bullshit regarding masks and preventative, pro-social behavior that seems to have really taken off recently? Or that the masks, themselves, cause some kind of psychological harm because mouths are magic?

Did I just accidentally summarize it or is there more to this line of nonsense?

the loving thing was sequenced by dec 31st, and i remember watching it on CNN after the ball dropped on NYE

the correspondence leading up to the ProMED article are not public record and will not be found with the 5 minute google search she made before firing off a tweet and then 10 more tweets defending it

this is entirely Zeynep thinking everything possibly known is available to her, and thinking that there can't possibly be a connected world of scientists that exist outside of her personal information network that may be privileged to information she is not.

also, remember that at least several epidemiologists knew about the MA bear week breakthrough cases 2 weeks ahead of the paper going to preprint and the US government responding to it

i think the article in this issue is this one. it is about the need to fund US foreign aid, and his reasoning is that better healthcare in the developing world will cause people to have fewer children
https://time.com/4704550/bill-gates-cutting-foreign-aid-makes-america-less-safe/

quote:

Better health puts nations on the path to self-sufficiency. How? When health improves, people decide to have fewer children, because they’re confident that the children they do have will survive into adulthood. As family size drops, it gets easier for countries to feed, educate, and provide opportunity for their people—and that is one of the best ways to stabilize any vulnerable region.

also I wonder what else caused the Syrian Civil War to happen Bill?

quote:

Syria is a tragic example of what can happen when the key ingredients of stability don’t come together. Beginning in 2007, the country experienced the worst drought in its history, driving more than a million people from rural areas into the cities, stoking political tension, and laying the foundation for the horrific civil war that continues today. Of course there were many causes of that war, and not every country that has a severe drought collapses as badly as Syria did. But the world will not be a safer place if the U.S. stops helping other countries meet their people’s needs.

so yeah cspam definitely didn't "call" the pandemic in December 2019. The first real mention was on January 11th where someone in the fastest and dumbest thread was basically just like "huh weird mystery virus that's cool" and then on January 19th TwoDay mentioned it again since it was killing people and then on January 21st the CDC reported the first case of covid in the usa:
https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?noseen=0&threadid=3908676&pagenumber=1539&perpage=40#post501836188

that's when we called it. January 21st. From then on it's like constant covid talk in all the threads until January 24th (the day China locked down Wuhan) when it got its own thread: the First Covid Thread Hallowed Be Thy Name.

In that thread people recommended respirators on the second page and were estimating death counts from 5 to 50 million.

Dr. John has been a primary source for me this entire pandemic. I believe I found him from CSPAM COVID thread one. I tend to believe he has a good idea what the medical consensus is and a pretty good idea of where we're heading.

So we've just given up? If the current situation in hospitals and schools is us giving a poo poo about this virus, what the gently caress is giving up going to do?
They're going to stop doing free public testing. The number doesn't matter anymore because everyone is going to get it. Everyone. The number of cases will eventually just be the number of people. This is the bleakest this has seemed to me since it began.
Herd Immunity is impossible, it is never coming. This virus is just going to mutate and re-spread through the entire population over and over again until what?

Is public health really completely incompatible with our culture, economy, and government? COVID just wins because we're all so loving stupid? After all the goddamn insane poo poo humanity has managed to survive, this is the thing that's going to actually turn us into a scene from Children of Men.

I don't have really anything constructive to add except I listened to this earlier today and had a similar train of thought. Don't forget the part though where he mentions I guess some big pediatrician in the UK that's like "we don't need to vaccinate kids because they'll just get it anyway and it's not a big deal" - I was painting a wall at the time so this is a rough quote

It's like looking into another world. Like, I know and remember that january 2020 involved me going out to my local chinese buffet and either january or february somewhat joking about taking dog coronavirus vaccines. my spouse had only been gone like, a month, from here at the farm. I threw away 3M N95 masks every time I dealt with diatomaceous earth. :psyduck:

I'm kind of with eye patch lady. I definitely feel like one of the few locally who give a poo poo and it's hard to keep caring when all you see is an endless expanse of this, forever.
