So, no joke my introduction to Getter Robo was through Gekiganger 3, via Nadesico, but I've loved these three dumb boys crashing their robots into each-other ever since. I've really been enjoying Getter Robo Arc as this bizarre, but lovable off-model mess. I didn't see a thread about it so I thought I'd make one. Anyway, I really like Ryouma Nagare a lot, and Takuma putting on that 安全+第一 helmet in ep one was pretty great. So who wants to talk about 3 guys crashing jets into each-other? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2xDk6WA8SM

Huh. Didn't think we'd get a thread this late in the season, but hey. It's been my favorite show this season. Why not, right? We're closing in on the end of the Arc manga, so it'll be interesting to see how the anime wraps things up. The new elements with the Go characters will probably play into the anime's ending, but how is still an open question.

I was lamenting the cgi and terrible art before this came out but it's so much fun I don't care, and honestly the cgi is pretty good all things considered! I don't know if there are any animators left in the industry that could animate late-Ishikawa robots in all their intricacy so it isn't like they had much choice. To be honest though the new stuff hasn't engaged me much so I've really fallen behind on this show the last couple of weeks

The animation is so, so bad, but I'm with you. I also basically just don't care, I love seeing my guys. Seeing both the dinosaur empire and the humans team up is just like 'lets go!'. my introduction to getter robo was literally though this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wl4JVo87L9w

Yeah, the magazine it was in got cancelled so it ended on a huge cliffhanger and then Ken Ishikawa died a year later. I'm interested to see how, if they evem try, to tie it all together. The final chapter kind of sped things along so they could easily slow it down a little still

i know it would never happen but it would be pretty sweet if all the mainline getter manga got animated with decent quality in order. as it is, each getter anime and ova has been in its own continuity that is incompatible with every other continuity. but again, the grand finale of the getter saga barely got made on a shoestring budget so this will absolutely never happen.

When I think about how long it took for JoJo to get a good anime it really feels like anything is possible. It's pretty easy to forget just how barebones that first season was. I'm really curious how getter arc was even made. I don't really know much of anything about Studio A-CAT & Bee Media, but the production quality is so rough I'm consistently reminded of 'Musashi Gundoh'. They manage to squeeze in a few seconds of decent animation here and there at least, and I can only imagine their number 1 priority was getting in some cool attacks for the next super robot wars game. There's this 'we got 10 random guys off the street to make this' energy that's kind of endearing. I haven't really kept up on new anime over the years, so maybe this kind of production quality is closer to the average than I realize.

Studio A-Cat's portfolio has mostly been 3DCG work for other anime and whatnot, their first actual production was only super recently with Frame Arms Girls which was made to sell Kotobukiya's kits.

Hey some more people on the English side that care about Getter Arc. There are dozens of us! Dozens! If you haven't already, please check out Ken Ishikawa's Gtter manga. Not just because Arc is an adaptation of one of them, but because they own. Getter Robo Go at least is mandatory reading imo.

I've only read the first series, which bounces around between ultraviolence, newt-based horror, and that kind of 60s/70s popular shonen manga style. It's got some amazing gems though like: I actually haven't read Go, so I'm gonna go ahead and do that.

Unlucky7 posted:I don't know much about Getter Robo except that everyone is some degree of psychopath, apparently. It's not the worst starting point. The manga's first arc has a mad scientist named Professor Saotome recruiting a team to pilot a giant robot because the dinosaurs are back and they're pissed. His robot can only be piloted by the biggest badasses, so first he gets Ryoma Nagare, a karate master whose style was banned from completion for being too lethal. Then after dinosaurs kill everyone at the lab except Ryoma, Professor Saotome, and Saotome's daughter Michiru, they recruit Hayato Jin, a youth terrorist who rips people's faces off, and Musashi, a goodnatured doofus judo expert. Getter pilots vary in their moral standing by the character and the version of the story, but they tend to all be some level of crazy.

the best thing about getter robo is that piloting skill and experience is completely irrelevant. if a badass jumps in they are fine, but everyone else who tries to pilot a getter tends to get mulched in short order.

i love how much this anime looks like poo poo and how terrible the foley is at all times it makes it really stand out when they suddenly compose a shot really well like kamui sitting on that cliffside when we learned he's the second prince my friends and i watched this alongside gridman. gridman. the contrast makes the meal

Yeah... the sound design is probably more tragic than the animation to me. It's so poorly used which is one thing, but I was hoping for something more visceral than the Yu-Gi-Oh soundboard Otoh, it's been a fun watch and my favorite show this season and I really need to get caught up!

Just imagining what trigger could do with getter robo is a fun brain adventure. if I put on my art hat, I always think about how Bones adapted ONE's art in mob psycho, and I think Ishikawa's style definitely has this off-model, off-kilter vibrancy that could be hard to adapt if you're using the source material solely as a story board... but yeah, it just totally misses the mark visually, still, having fun watching it. The Clone Musashis were some real gallows humor.

This adaptation has had its ups and downs but this latest ep was really good imo. Animation was noticably better, lots of traditionally animated Getters Bringing Uzala back was a cool addition Looking forward to the conclusion now.

Uzala showing up again felt kinda off to me though, there was something nice about the perfunctory way McDonald bites it in the manga - just him simply being crushed and Takuma feeling lost after his vengeance just ... peters out.
