Is the effectiveness of the moderna vaccine over pfizer really because it's just bigger?? That's pretty funny.

EDIT: I'm a huge dumbass when it comes to this stuff and I have no idea if it's more effective or not.

That's fair enough. Unfortunately, the institutions (like the CDC) who are supposed to take scientific data and then synthesize & communicate policy have been pretty much making GBS threads the bed. The media are mostly useless and/or straight up lying (to you, themselves, or both). And twitter, or social media more generally, is full of crazy.

These papers aren't written for a general (or even non-specialist) audience, but if people don't try to engage with the primary sources the "interpreters" they are left with are usually some combination of disingenuous, stupid, unreliable, or crazy. I don't think its fair or appropriate that people should have to rummage through scientific papers to know what the gently caress is going on, but in the absence of functioning institutions we get to chose between helplessness or DIY. Failing states sure are great.

Anyway that paper covers a particular mechanism for SARS-CoV-2 evading the immune systems. Pretty much all viruses evade the innate and adaptive immune systems in some way. The MHC downregulation described in the paper is a way for the virus to, in a broad way, reduce the effectiveness of T-cells by interfering with signaling. They mention how some patients who recover from covid still appear to (maybe) be carriers, and those patients show signs of T-cell disfunction. Maybe this MHC downregulation has something to do with it. Maybe it doesn't. It's interesting, but its a huge crazy leap to go from there to "my long covid symptoms are because covid actually lasts forever".

At the end of the day, viruses which persist in the host by damaging, suppressing, or evading the immune system end up doing one of two things. Either they go into a latent phase, stop producing infectious virus, mostly shut the gently caress up, and occasionally cause trouble (like herpes). Or, they keep replicating, increasingly building up until the host succumbs or generally gets hosed up (like HIV, or FIP, which that twitter thread mentions). Neither of these is happening in long covid patients, and really only the second option seems possible with SARS-CoV-2--which would be easy to detect and would not go unnoticed. On the other hand, it is not mysterious that a virus which can cause hypoxia + widespread damage to the vascular system, lungs, kidneys, heart, and brain sometimes results in lingering or permanent symptoms.

Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said if more people aren't persuaded to get vaccinated by messaging from health officials and "trusted political messengers," additional mandates from schools and businesses may be necessary.

"I believe that's going to turn this around because I don't think people are going to want to not go to work or not go to college ... They're going to do it," Fauci told CNN's Jen Christensen during an interview at the NLGJA, the Association of LGBTQ Journalists, convention Sunday. "You'd like to have them do it on a totally voluntary basis, but if that doesn't work, you've got to go to the alternatives."

NYC's experiment begins today: public school starts (1 million kids) with no remote option
NYC also forced all city workers (300k people) to back into the office today

"Our kids need to be in school and it's unbelievable that some kids haven't seen the inside of a classroom for a year and a half," the mayor said Thursday. "There are massive consequences to that, including health care consequences. The healthiest, best place for kids to be is in school."

"We believe this is an extraordinarily safe environment," de Blasio responded. "We've proven it and the most important thing is our kids have to come back."

Yes, it seems to maintain titer development longer than Pfizer, and it is probably due to the amount of mRNA being about three times larger in the Moderna product.

Hahah, yeah, if only we'd done something like a mandatory strict lockdown, contract tracing, and border / airport quarantines so the kids didn't have to be out of school for a year and a half.

There are definitely weird supply chain issues for a while now. Canned cat food was basically cleaned out at Meijer this weekend. Normally you'll find a single brand that's sold out, but this was the first time I had seen it across all brands.

Kroger was out of plastic bags(I like to use the single use bags for trash bags at home  ), so I ended up with a paper bag. At first I assumed it was the phaseout, but that's apparently not until 2025 (because people bitched about it).

But it's actually a hatchet-job on China, the one country to beat the pandemic.
