STONE COLD 64 posted:whats a good semi recent humans exploring space movie im on an outer space vibe rn I really liked Ad Astra & Arrival for recent space movies, they both feel pretty grounded and believable and are well paced (Arrival, not The Arrival, unless you feel like watching mid-90s Charlie Sheen play an astronomer named Zane Zaminski lol)

There’s a few scenes with him in court, but mostly it’s people talking about it outside of court. They even mention a surprise confidential informant who’s going to testify, but they never show it or mention it again

I got kind of bummed because I enjoy a good trial scene. The new Perry Mason show had some great ones if you’re also into that.

Watched Prisoners tonight finally. Thought it was incredible but the first half was stronger than the ending. Incredible performances but felt the back half became a bit more rote. Especially as the core mystery is obvious from so early on. Whereas the first half was harrowing and dreadful in all the best ways. I think after Loki meets Keller in the abandoned house is when the wheels come off a bit. The red whistle was a nice payoff though. Think the only Villeneuve stuff I have to watch is Sicario and Incendies.

Sicario is tight, perfect suspense filmmaking. Incendies is more divisive, kind of a slow burn mystery/suspense that almost plays like a grand tragedy. I like them both in different ways. I feel like Prisoners is a good watch overall but ultimately feels like kind of messy and bloated, I dunno, that's probably the point but it's one of his weakest films. It's saved by other things like shiny cinematography and twitchy Gyllenhaal.

I think the main problem is it sets up such a hard problem in the first half really well but then the last third feels more like one of those Morgan Freeman Alex Cross films which feels like a weak ending.

I got a good Chris related screenie I’ll post when I’m home. And a Paulie one for that matter. In other knews I bought all the audiobooks by Laird Barron that weren’t trashy noir novels that I could find as well as Behold The Void by Frank Fracassetti or something which had a foreword by Lair Barron. I’ll report back on if it’s deece.
