For a full background I'd read:

Iron Snakes to introduce some of the Astartes characters.

The Saint arc from Gaunt's Ghosts, which comprises Honour Guard, The Guns of Tanith, Straight Silver, and Sabbat Martyr. This sets up the Saint and Milo.

After the two Urdesh books, finish everything off with Salvation's Reach, The Warmaster and Anarch, the last three Ghosts books.

That is five books of introduction to these two, but they're five excellent books.

I assume GG gets a little less pulpy eventually? I recently listened to the audiobook of First and Only and while I enjoyed it I tend to prefer the """more serious""" books.

I like Abnett, but I have so little time to read these days that I don't want to trudge through even good stuff if I don't have to. I'll keep pursuing the dark coil stuff; I'm reading Requiem Infernal now and it's so loving good.

It absolutely does. The first novels and stories were almost the very first Black Library fiction written for GW, so they are certainly finding their feet regarding tone etc. I think Abnett went pulpy short story vibe for the initial two books (as they were compilations of serialised stories) and then realised he could examine Sci fi versions of actual warfare scenarios (vaguely) like Stalingrad in space.

Necropolis is the first truly great GG book, but the next four book arc 'The Saint' is really great too. Focusing in armour combat, trench warfare, covert ops, and various other aspects.

After that, The Lost arc focuses much more on the characters, and also examines Chaos in much more detail. Previously they'd been fairly generic villains, but this arc really digs into Abnett's chaos as a civilisation, rather than just traitors. The Armour of Contempt features some of the most memorable passages about the actual act of fighting all out war against a hellish enemy in any 40k fiction.

Once you hit Traitor General it's honestly banger after banger.

Just start with Necropolis, you can fill in the blanks yourself and the book itself slaps, "What if Stalingrad but with all the knobs turned up" is a killer premise

Abercrombie is good.

I still remember a friend of mine saying he was just reading the first First Law book and me and another friend who'd read it asking "Have you met the Bloody Nine yet?" and him being "Wut. He's in it from the start?" and us "You'll know what we mean when you get to that point"

Then coming back a week later and being "OK. Now I get what you mean".

Then just read the Urdesh books, the background stuff is for completionists. Sure , it's all good stuff, but you won't miss anything critical. There's a legitimate Imperial Saint. Damocles Squad are all veteran badasses. Blood Pact fight like a real military, not as hordes of slavering fanatics. There, saved you hours of reading.

I imagined it like an action movie, with super high speed sequences and dramatic slowdowns when the weapons were firing, then everything speeds up again and they're zooming off with great balls of fire erupting behind.

Eh I read both today.

Combat scenes swing between really nailing the whole 3 meter tall several hundred pound super soldier aspect of them the running past the truck scene, the fight between Priad and the Arnogaur. To pretty lame [spoiler]like when they are getting suppressed by guys with .45 caliber weapons.

Also read silent hunter which hilariously can be summed up as "Never come near my latent psyker son again"

It looks like him, but he’s at least been demoted to Lieutenant.

Maybe he was the fill-in captain of 2nd company while Sicarius was off leading the Honour Company against the 13th Black Crusade and got demoted back to the ranks when he came back.

The developers:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saber_Interactive

They made their own 3d engine and made the Halo remasters with it, then they made World War Z and a Witcher 3 port for the Switch. So it looks like they've got the technical chops but no design / art / music / writing credentials to speak of.

However, they've been on an acquisition rampage over the last year. They bought, among other minor studios, the Metro guys, half of the Ghostrunner devs, and whatever's left of 3D Realms.

So I'm not optimistic, but it doesn't seem hopeless to me. If I were to predict its chances, I'd say 25% crap, 40% mediocre, 30% good, 5% excellent.

Looks pretty good. The planet looks very similar to the first one's forge world, all sandstone-looking Ministorum buildings.

I hope we get more varied environments, 2011 was at the tail end of the Call of Duty / Gears of War "brown and grey" muted palette trend, but it's been a while and fashions have changed.

He was dragged off by the inquisition at the end of 1 so maybe Lieutenant was the only spot open after he got back and primaris'd.

The traitor guardsmen in Space Marine 1 were the worst part of that game specifically because they would often spawn on ledges you can't reach and shoot you with rocket launchers.

They were using a local production autogun rifle, so .45 actually is in the upper end of whats reasonable for someone to use for a hand held assault rifle. In comparison the heavy stubber was .60 cal which is also somewhat reasonable.

Ah, in various other Sabbat Worlds books they talk about ".20 cal autocannon" being a big round which is lol. A .45 round out of a rifle cartridge would be a lot nastier.
