I'm guessing this is in reference to the Spider Man ep? I've decided to stay away from it for now, I'm really not in the mood for smug “modern movies amirite?”.

Speaking about Stephen, for some reason it just popped unto my head, one of my favourite little reactions of his. It's an old (fantastic) episode, “One magic Christmas”, and Andrew says something about a bank robbery, but calls it “an attack on a bank”.

Steve: (laughs) “an attack on a bank?”
Andrew: “yeah that's what they call them on the North Pole.”
Steve: “oh that makes sense. So anyway...” (Andrew laughs in the background).

(it's a top tier episode, check it out).

There's the smallest thing that Stephen did that pops in my head every so often and makes me laugh. In the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull episode, Andrew describes his ideal scenario of Indiana Jones kicking Mac into that vortex thing at the end, and just the way Stephen then imitates Ray Winstone screaming "Noooo!", it always gets me.

Nothing they say in The Spider-man episode is wrong though. Episode was also hilarious.

Was very surprised though that Stephen popping the Spider-man balloon wasn’t mentioned once what with the parade and Thanksgiving happening in the movie.

It did a long while ago. The umpteenth time they start nagging about it it’s no longer insightful or fun. I’m sure they’ll realise this one day…

Seriously, if you want sex in a movie, watch porn. If you want a realistic and healthy depiction of flirting, romance and sexuality in movies, that was never depicted in movies and likely never will.

Their point is that it absolutely has been depicted in many of the movies they watch and iirc they always deliberately acknowledge when they see a healthy, normal cinematic relationship

Yeah, imo they're right, but it's a completely one-sided conversation so as a listener I'd just as soon they give it a rest.

I get this funky high on the yellow sun.

Chalk me up as someone who doesn’t mind when they harp on it. Hell, do it every episode. I can see why some people might think it’s one sided, but it’s surrounded by jokes and they always are coming at it from a larger opinion about film vs just whining about a movie in and of itself imho.

Completely agree with this. I just feel like movies of the Alien/Casablanca/Citizen Kane/Goodfellas variety don't provide enough material to really make the show shine. While Spider-Man is a good movie, it also has flaws that make for better riffs and digressions. If they kept the WLMs to entertaining schlock I would be very happy.

But this is obviously a taste thing, and I'm sure others would disagree.

That’s not to say that the Alien episode didn’t have good stuff. The whole bit about “Did an alien gently caress my face?” was gold, Jerry.

All of the talk about sex and sexuality in movies began in earnest when they joined the Order of Boop, and invited her grace into their hearts. When they say "we want to see characters who gently caress" they really mean "we want to gently caress Betty Boop"

It took 27 minutes before they actually started talking about what was going on in the movie. I also made a mental bet to myself that if they do a bit about the xenomorph they would have it talk like how they do the shark from Jaws and of course they do

My problem with their constant sexuality talk is that that's what it is, just constant. Like yes I agree that the Disney helmed marvel movies are sterile and completely devoid of realistic human interactions but they just keep going on and on about it to the point it's just awkward and I'm sure many would rather they just moved on

I saw Spider-Man No Way Home yesterday and it's insane how much better Spider-Man 2002 is. Like Dafoe is in No Way Home playing Norman Osborn/Green Goblin but his performance is nowhere near as hammy as it was with that same character in the 2002 one. It's like he's playing a different, much less interesting character in NWH.

No, I think this is spot on.

The best WLM episodes are films that most people love but that still have obvious shortcomings, goofy elements and gaping plot holes to poke fun at. Spiderman being a perfect example. Superman 1 & 2, Batman 89. The movies you listed are pretty much wall to wall excellence so the humor is harder to come by.

I think this is true but also: if the movie in question is “nerdy” it tends to be a lot more fun to talk about. Their episodes on Star Wars, LotR, Indiana Jones, all excellent fun while still being about wonderful movies, because there’s a lot of fun colourful characters and wonky stuff to riff on.

Goodfellas was like the least fun I’ve had listening to these guys. Just beat after beat of “and then this scene, it’s so awesome, x is so good, y is fantastic.” Rinse and repeat. It’s not fun.

It’s a Wonderful Life is one of my favorite episodes and I think it falls into that same category as Kane or Goodfellas episodes. I think the hit and miss ratio is about the same for wlms and whms, its just with so many less wlms it seems like its worse.
