Has there ever been a "magical power school" show/manga that actually made it through all the years and finished and didn't scale into something out halfway through the first year.

Iruma has made it to year 2 of demon school and so far I think it has mostly avoided this, though I doubt it will actually play out every year of school.

Honestly, it's just too tempting not to shake up the story in the final act. It's kind of a cliche but it's also an easy way to communicate how big the stakes have gotten.

They didn't mean My Hero Academia, they meant magic/sci-fi/superhero/whatever school settings. It's hard to show that the stakes have risen if the school's somehow still a neutral zone where nothing happens as the cast runs off to fight nuclear firebears or planet conquering aliens every other arc.

Yeah, I meant it as more of a general trope of the setting. Like how Harry Potter had the school year for the first six books, and then they were on the run for most of the seventh, that sort of thing.

If it led to multiple arcs like Gentle Criminal, it would have been great. Deku furiously trying to stop one low-grade criminal from busting up a school festival that they were putting on to give a small child something to smile about had higher emotional stakes than most of the comic.

(But no, it would have just been a ton of tournament arcs disguised as sports festivals or training courses.)

I wouldn't mind if it was characters other than Deku fighting minor villains either. An arc from the view point of another character, y'know?

Since Deku is kind of boring and interchangeable in motivation with the other characters in his class, I don't think it would've hurt to build up the ensemble cast idea more by giving them all personal struggles over the course of three years.

Yeah, I guess you can say that MHA’s scale is too big for it’s strengths to play out effectively. It would be more interesting as a comic imo if there was no boogeyman figure like AFO lurking as the endgame. I’m thinking of One Punch Man but played straight

Most of the cast aren’t remotely interesting enough for individual arcs to work

you could wring some pathos and dimensionality from a lot of the UA kids, even non-entities like ojiro and souji

but it would mean dedicating the entire manga to that one class, which would be its own problem. AssClass deliberately sequestered the kids from the rest of the school/polite society so it could dedicate at least some time to every one of them, MHA’s scope has always been larger than that

e: and that’s not even getting into the teachers. I love Hound Dog’s entire concept to bits and he barely gets a dozen pages

It would have been nice to have a slice-of-life chapter at some point for someone like Sugarman, exploring things from his perspective, maybe how it feels to have someone in your class with a quirk that just seems like a straight-up better version of yours. Even better if the whole time the chapter is hinting at some kind of resentment and then it turns out it really doesn't bother him and he's like, easily the most emotionally stable of the characters.

Then maybe one with Tailman where his tail keeps getting caught in things.

They absolutely are but for some reason rather than even try to attempt to give them characterization the author is just speedrunning to the end while occasionally glancing at the popularity charts.

UA and that other school where Camie and Goenitz went seem to be more like trade schools in practical terms. They're doing academics but they're also doing real work experience and presumably if it was five or six years earlier they'd all be expecting to get jobs as sidekicks or specialists once they were done.

Yeah, I think that is how it works. Suneater was already lined up to work as Fatgums sidekick and I think in the Aizawa section of Vigilantes they mention it's expected that you'll be a sidekick for a few years after you graduate and him going solo immediately was weird.

Edit: I went and checked and man, that bit where it's shown that Aizawa lived in a featureless apartment with just a suitcase and sleeping bag is so sad. I'm not crazy about Vigilantes but that arc was great.
