Did you have any issues getting sound playing in the emulaters? I initially had finally gotten everything set up with PWM audio, until I realized that it sounds like poo poo on the RPI. I then went the same route as you and bought that same DAC you did to hook up to my (also Adafruit bought) stereo amp. I followed the instructions on the Adafruit site for the install scripts and such, and I do get audio when I run speaker-test through the Linux console. But when I get into EmulationStation I get no audio in the menus or in games. I can't seem to find any clear info online as to what to set for output when using digital audio like this. Anyways, here's my thinking on this. After seeing what you went through with the controls, and doing some looking around of my own, I decided I just don't want to gently caress with that part of this project. So this is where I'm at now. I now realize my speakers are probably too big, but we'll see. Essentially what I'm thinking of doing is having the screen, sound, and power stuff all in a 3d printed enclosure. The back of said enclosure will have a mounting point for the 8bitdo Xbox controller clip. I flipped the hinge around, so the screen will pretty much cover the controller but I don't think that will be an issue, and will reduce it being so top heavy. The dpads on these newer Xbox controllers are actually pretty nice, and should work well for older games. Also, if you connect them via USB they work just like a wired controller, so no batteries or Bluetooth to worry about there. Power wise, it's definitely going to be a 2s 18650 setup, not sure whether I'll go 2p or 3p though. I'll be using protected cells along with the buck/boost board which also has protection on it. I'm thinking I'm going to have them removable via a battery door. I found a CMB from China for 2s setups, but I'm not sure if I'm going to bother using it. I got a nice Argon40 case with the fan hat for the RPI4 to help with thermals as I may OC to help with the more demanding emulation stuff. The fan hat also has a power button that I'm hoping to utilize for turning the system on and off. So yea, I'm pretty happy with what I've got so far, everything seems to work fine emulation-wise. Next step is to start figuring out the design for the enclosure and get to 3d printing and/or machining. I'm fortunate enough to be the only machinist for a plastic extrusion company, and have free use of the machinery and a really nice 3d printer we use for prototyping.

Nintendo DS emulation on Retropie Everyone's playing that new fangled pokemon brilliant diamond and shining pearl and it's making me wanna play pokemon too. But then I watch them playing pokemon and remember how boring playing pokemon is and totally don't feel like it. Anyway, there's a question that we need to answer and that question is, could I play the original diamond pearl platinum on my poo poo??? A search shows that Nintendo DS emulation sentiment on the RPi3 is pretty bearish. There's an experimental DS emulator called DraStic that seems to have the best performance so far and it's available on Retropie. Spoiler: I tried it out and something must have changed recently, because it's pretty dang good. Or well, it could use some more polish but it's playable. Retropie Forums posted:1.Enter the RetroPie Setup script through the RetroPie system in EmulationStation. A quick restart later, and... Bleh. Sora for the NDS?? That's an odd choice, guy who made this skin. Configuration needed for DraStic By default, it started with both screens in the vertical format. And all my buttons were screwed up. The B button was the A button and the Y button was the B button and nothing else was mapped correctly. It was utter chaos. I looked it up and you need to hit "M" on the keyboard to get to the input configuration menu. So I pulled out my keyboard and stuck it right into my game... thingy(?) and was able to hot-plug my way into the menu. I have to say this is pretty nifty. This right here is a great argument to include 2 full size USB ports on it in future versions, space allowing. I'd love to be able to plug in a keyboard and mouse on a whim. Man that feels good. Or maybe I should just put the full size USB ports on the docking station instead? That would be almost as nice but not as satisfying. I fixed up all the buttons and changed the orientation to horizontal. Much better! The screen options also include a mode where it only displays one screen at a time, scaled to fill the whole display and you can switch with a button press (i mapped it to L2). I kind of wish they had an offset mode that some of the other emulators have where one screen is real big and then the other screen is, like, half size and in the corner. Maybe the devs will get to that eventually. I still needed to account for the broken left dpad button so I mapped the dpad to the left analog stick and then mapped the stylus to the right analog stick. Something is wrong there though because the emulator only responds to the up/down axis of the right stick even though it detects the left/right. I declare it to be an emulator bug! I don't really have any strong opinions about this Gen's starters. So I guess I'll go with Piplup because he's blue. What the gently caress DOUCHE, what are you planning??? Don't touch me Oh. He literally turtled for 5-10 turns doing nothing but Withdraw... I had to pound him to death because apparently that is what penguins do(TM). After the first battle, DOUCHE says he had to go because his mom called so we both went home. Mom gave me a pair of running shoes, the oldest quality of life improvement in pokemon games. As I departed on my adventure, I barely got to the edge of the wild grass when DOUCHE was standing there waiting to accost me with another endless cascade of text. This time he says that before we go to Sandgem town, we should visit Mirage Lake on the edge of town like we always used to and catch the legendary pokemon that resides there. Yeah, okay, buddy. He's following me around now. That's cool! This feels like a final fantasy game. TO BE CONTINUED? My head hurts and I'm not sure if I want to play this game anymore, although I frequently get pangs to play pokemon so maybe I'll come back to this game everytime that happens. Will Cory and DOUCHE catch the legendary pokemon in Mirage Lake??? (HAHAHA No.) Will Cory ever get to Sandgem town and meet Prof. Rowan for whatever he wants??? (I'd hope so. These cutscenes are killing me) Will Piplup survive this Nuzlocke challenge unscathed? (wait a minute, what now?!?) Discoveries so far No additional battery data for now, since I kept it plugged in the entire time. The full case really changes the feel of the device though. It's actually more uncomfortable because of how thick it is. As you can see, trying to hold it like a conventional gameboy/switch is really infeasible... The solution is to hold it like this, which is still uncomfortable. I have only a part of my pinky resting on the back and it's really unstable. Would not recommend. What I see could have been slightly better would be to have the shoulder buttons at the back of the case (where my index finger is in this picture), that way you could hold it as normal as possible. A bed-facing filleted edge, bold move. I've printed many of those on some incidental parts recently and now I'm convinced that it's pretty doable and will also look great after a bit of sanding and/or filler like babyeatingpsychopath mentioned earlier. Is this part with 0.2mm layer height? That's taking a lot longer than I would expect.

So this was the end result last week- And a view of the fillets. The white stuff is the PVA support material. Not perfect but not terrible either- So I had bought some of those brass thread insert things. I made an attempt to install them with a soldering iron. It kind of worked, however my starting hole sizes were a little too small so it was hard to center them, and melted plastic kept squeezing up into the insert. So now I'm printing rev 2 with the holes sized a little bigger than the inserts and I'm going to try super gluing them in. I should hopefully have that tomorrow. morning.

Wow, that looks great! Did you switch to a chamfer? The close-up you took looks like a 45 degree diagonal. Also, I found that I've been able to avoid using the heat threaded inserts so far, even after screwing and unscrewing things maybe a couple dozen times. Which is nice, because they're kind of expensive. I think it would be worth putting them in the screw holes on a "permanent" enclosure though.

Godot Engine on Retropie I spent some time these last couple weeks mucking around with Godot engine. Remember when I made that weird Megaman Battle Network demo? I put it on the Raspberry pi! I had to follow a guide by someone named "hiulit" who ported Godot to arm processors (like the raspberry pi) and it worked pretty well. I also ended up downloading some graphics and setting up a custom skin for the Godot category. trippy For the actual "game" executable, I needed to figure out what settings to use to export this thing to the arm environment. Further down the repo instructions, hiulit managed to include instructions to do exactly this. Godot should spit out a zip file somewhere and all that's left to do is to scp this zip file into the RetroPie/roms/godot-engine folder. Turning on the vgdm demo loads exactly like it would on the computer, splash screen and all: Unfortunately, I ran into problems here. It's just sitting there and not responding to the controls, taunting me. I needed to set up the input handling to recognize the Arduino controller. There's also a second problem where the Godot emulator doesn't have a menu button to exit out back to EmulationStation. Supposedly it's been solved in the issue tracker for hiulit's github but there wasn't enough info for me to follow up. I opened a discussion, but I doubt they'll reply any time soon. For the first issue with the buttons, I had to run jstest and record the button mapping for the Arduino controller. Let's put this here for future reference... Then I changed the input map of my godot game to match the buttons in my controller. The way my buttons were attached were done without regard to which exact number each button would assume and so it's different from PS4, xbox, and other controllers that loosely follow some sort of standard input mapping. Next, I dug into the repo code and looking briefly into the FRT code to see what could be done about exiting the godot engine using a chorded controller button press. They added in an option for the emulator to exit if you press "Shift+Enter" on the keyboard at any time, but there didn't seem to be anything similar for controllers. I didn't feel like spending time to mod the source code at the moment, so instead I coded my game demo to detect the START and SELECT buttons being pressed and manually exit the game. https://i.imgur.com/2oQbKCF.mp4 Tada. Current State of Godot Support for RPi? There are a couple drawbacks from the config changes I need to make. The first is that my Arduino controller has an eccentric button mapping that is different from all the most popular game controllers. Game controllers seem to be a complicated thing to get right (which is why things never seem to work...). The problem lies in the game engine and editor side. The godot emulator isn't integrated into the rest of RetroPie so it doesn't use the configured bindings that the other emulators use and instead, reads the raw input of the USB device from the operating system. I needed to change my input mapping to recognize the Arduino controller mapping. In changing this, I made it so that my game wouldn't be compatible with PS4 or other controllers. To get everything working right, I'd need to code in a more elaborate input mapping that can handle all that. A more proper fix would be to mod the godot "emulator" to use the RetroPie configured input bindings. This is bad news for people who want to run arbitrary Godot games on the RPi because you don't have control over the source code to change the input mapping. The second problem is similar to the first. I manually coded in quitting when the user presses START and SELECT. If you want to run literally any other Godot game, and you aren't on keyboard, then you're poo poo out of luck here. Exiting the game without plugging in a keyboard would require a hard reset. Not too cool... My conclusion is that RPi godot support is possible, but still really rough around the edges. I could probably help with the effort but there really isn't anything on Godot that I want to run so... I dunno lol Also, based on the dev's own notes, they recommend running Godot games using the RPi 4 because the earlier models can barely run the engine unless it's a really simple game like what I made. It's not a very bright prognosis. This was a fun way to mess around for a little while and I got a cute little demo to play around with. I think I should dig into the EmulationStation source code a lot if I want to make a front-end mod for it instead of using Godot engine.

And then probably make a similar but completely different product based on those smaller designs. Kind of like how I made the 3d printed enclosure. I think this will help me in several ways. The first is that hopefully it will mitigate problems with “designing myself into a corner” where I lay something down and then it turns out later that I should have done something different and it will be a huge pain in the rear end to change it. Basically, this is to fix every time I talked about how I had to make certain CAD features smaller or had to work around the wiring or didn’t want to implement a feature because it meant I had to rip out a whole bunch of stuff. The second benefit is that now that I have a rough knowledge of all the parts of the system, I can break things down into sensible chunks that can be developed more or less independently. I hope this will make things easier because instead of one long line of tasks, I’ll have a large list of smaller chunks of work that I can switch between when things get delayed or when I just get bored of what I’m doing and want a change of pace. Some of those tasks will yield a cute, coherent product and that might do a lot for my need for instant gratification. So, yeah, I’m looking forward to this! Phase 2 uhhh “Quest” List I was told to go to see Impa in Kakariko village, so I went there and she turned out to be this crazy old person who gave me a bunch of poo poo to do. Also guess what? I hope to get handy enough with this to whip up stuff like I can with CAD drawings, just more expensive and time consuming. Finish making that USB Hub design that I did a long time ago. I need to figure out how to assemble and solder using surface mount components. Test out the button PCBs that I made. There was one for tactile switches and another with the custom trace for metal dome switches. Create a breakout board for a key matrix IC. This should save some space compared to the handmade discrete component version that uses a bunch of diodes. Adding an audio jack to the CM3 breakout. Add a wireless module to the CM3 breakout. This part is key to making this system not a pain in the rear end to use. Hello. After all that hubbub about splitting things into tasks and trying to facilitate faster prototyping, I’m finding it quite difficult to start because most of these TO DO items are about learning new stuff and that takes a lot of effort. Progress has been slow, and will probably continue to be slow. Currently, I’m splitting my time between this stuff and a bunch of personal tasks related to figuring out my uh… job situation and that’s not really helping. I have hopes that everything will be sorted within a year, but who knows. Fingers crossed. During the holidays, I spent a lot of quality time with my printer. I got around to making those small random prints that people normally do when they first get a printer. Some of those prints ended up as modifications to the 3d printer shrine. Currently, it looks like this: The only new thing in these pictures is that I outfitted the bottom section of the table with acrylic panels and two swinging doors to keep the inside climate controlled. They’re mounted with brackets I designed and attached to my lovely internet table with a bunch of wood screws. I used Fusion360 to make these. You like ‘em? I’m probably going to use it for everything going forward. There was an uncomfortable transition period mostly related to specifying constraints, but soon the user interface became intuitive to me and it feels like I can even figure out how to do new things without searching online. Editing things is possible now. It feels amazing to rewind to an early step, make my adjustment, and then have all the subsequent steps magically change in a sensible way. Was adding all this fancy stuff to the cabinet necessary? No. But the mounting brackets for the acrylic panels were a nice simple design to get into f360 and also to serve as a first draft of a possible enclosure design. I’m very glad I did this first because I realized mid way through that this bracket design requires pretty much perfect tolerances between all the screw holes, panels, and wood surface and that’s pretty bad for something that needs to exist in real life. It would be a good idea to try a more forgiving design the second go around. The hinges were the perfect next step up in difficulty. I haven’t modeled many things that move. Also this is the first print-in-place design I’ve made. I get to cross another thing off my bucket list! The middle piece of the hinge is printed 0.4mm in the air above the other piece. It took some trial and error to get to this value where I didn’t leave enough room and the two parts fused together. Then I modeled some handles and a screwhole jig for mounting them onto the acrylic panels. The only thing that’s missing now is a doorstop. Tada.

“What the gently caress is ‘Shrine Wheels’???”, you might ask. Good question. To answer it, let me unnecessarily overcomplicate things by explaining that I don’t own property. This will make sense later… I don’t have a workshop or man cave I can dump this 3d printer into so for now it resides in the living room. When my landlord decides to do something in the house, I have to move the printer out of the way and then move it back. I make due by carrying the printer and paver stone separately and then deadlifting the table and putting everything in my bedroom temporarily. To make it easier, I think it would be nice for this table to have wheels on it. Not just regular wheels like on a shopping cart or one of those TVs that the teacher used to occupy the class while nursing a hangover. If the table is too jiggly, it’ll affect the print quality, so what I need are removable or retractable wheels so when the printer is working, the table legs will be directly touching solid ground. But what is this called? Is this even a thing? I tried searching for “retractable casters”, and that leads me to casters with brakes or casters that have a screw on them to raise and lower them. Like this! Or this I think casters with brakes would still be too shaky, and casters with retraction built in require latching each caster separately just to change modes. In these past six months, things have changed completely. Lots of new companies springing up, vying for market space in the portable market segment. A new premium portable springs up every few months, pushed out almost as fast as mobile phones, claiming to be the ultimate gaming pc. Gaming… has changed. Portable gaming isn’t exciting or new anymore. Despite all this, I’ve been feeling the urge to pick up electronics again. Sometimes I feel like this thread is out of place here, but I think I want to keep going until I can finish a usable result and deliver files. My current plan is to try and post at least once a month, so less frequently than before, but maybe with more substantial things done per post to make up for it. Thank you for sticking around! USB Hub PCB Design Experiment (Part 3, JLCPCB Boards Arrived) This debounce looks like a dog’s dinner!! I made a test PCB in KiCAD 5 a long time ago to dip my toes into the wonderful world of PCB design. There were three sections–one to test the fit of omron switches as ABXY buttons, another to test the fit of metal dome switch membranes under a 3DS dpad, and a third to create a simple USB hub design. I also got this PCB fabbed to make some “mouse bites” and see how they feel in real life. It feels really weird to pick up something that I started such a long time ago. I’ve heard that the lead free HASL coating is good for short-lived prototypes probably because they’ll oxidize if you leave them out too long. This is bad especially for this because the metal dome contacts need to remain pristine since they won’t be covered in solder. I think the gold ENIG plating doesn’t suffer from this issue because it’s gold, which is why they recommend using this coating for actual products. I wonder how practical this advice is. Those mouse bites worked just as planned. Ehehehehehe. Next week: FEET ASMR. I used my fine tipped pliers to break off the “sprues”. You can see how the FR-4 really is made of fiberglass. The broken areas have string-like things coming off of them. I should probably use some sandpaper to smooth out the nubs here. Fiberglass splinters are nasty. I soldered my leftover omron switches to the breakout board along with some right angle pin header to the back. I only had 3 of the 100g (white) buttons, so I used a 160g (blue) button on the last one. I think I like the squishiness/ease of the white buttons better. Perfect fit! I also brought out the second, white set of 3DS buttons I bought a long time ago. Glad I got extra sets of everything. I love having all the parts on hand. Waiting for everything to come in the mail sucks. Here’s the pad with the sticker mounted. It’s really stuck there. That’s good! Then all I need to do is lay the silicon membrane on top followed by the dpad. Finding a way to mount these things in place will be kind of tricky. On the 3DS, the outer case has a very specific dpad shaped hole to do this. Okay, so for the second part, it’s time to see if this stuff is working. I brought out the Arduino Pro Micro I used for cardboard prototyping and a breadboard to recreate a key matrix circuit. I need 10 inputs, with 2 of them being the column wires (so a 4x2 matrix). So, these were also spaced to go under the dpad, but they’re close enough to the ABXY button distances that I can put those on top instead. It also seems to work pretty well! I’m very happy with how this turned out. This could save a lot of space, the only hurdle is sourcing a supplier for custom made dome membrane stickers. Okay, time to handle the most complicated part: the USB hub. I gotta figure out a way to solder a SSOP IC (the FE.1 usb 2.0 controller) and some I went to youtube to go strum up some conventional wisdom about SMD soldering. There’s some basic solder blobbing and wick techniques, but also this thing called “drag soldering” that I think I want to try out. Should I go out and get the right tools for the job? Probably. Will I actually do that? …no. I’m gonna give it a go with my lovely unregulated hand-me-down soldering iron and thick gauge solder. What even could go wrong??? Okay, recall this picture: The idea here is that this mechanism will sit underneath the table that I keep my 3d printer. You use this by putting your foot on the pedal and pushing down to engage the caster wheels and lift the table off the ground. In this position, the table can now be wheeled around with ease. Lifting your foot will cause the wheels to rise and the table legs will touch the ground, anchoring the table to its position. I made a sketch using Fusion360 to let me play around with measurements and see how much clearance I need for the foot handle. The travel distance of the lever was concerning to me because the lever must span the entire table width, making it about 27 inches long. I need to make sure it’s not going to add, like, 2 or 3 feet to the bottom of this table. Time to put the constraint solver through some hoops. It’ll be easier to explain by overlaying the picture on the sketch. I labeled where the caster wheels are and where the legs and foot lever is in red text. The casters are 3 inches tall and I put in 3/4 inch thickness for the foot lever. A 3/4 inch difference in height between being “up” and “down” seems like enough clearance for the legs when I’m wheeling the table around. The variable I varied was distance from the hinge to the caster wheel mount. In the picture I settled on 2 inches, which I found gives a good compromise between lever height and wheel clearance. Here you can see that if I want 3/4 inches of clearance and set the wheels 2 inches from the hinge, I get a lever travel distance of about 5 inches. The whole mechanism has to be more than double this length, which means it will be around a foot tall. An extra foot on the bottom of the table isn’t bad, I think. It might be better even since it will bring the 3d printer bed closer to eye level when sitting. Moving the caster any closer to the hinge basically makes the lever go vertical when unengaged and moving the caster to 3 inches in distance will decrease the lever travel to about 3 inches. I think that’s preferable but at this point the far side casters will be a good distance towards the middle of the table and that might be bad for stability. I’ve been meaning to do a mock up of the whole frame for better visualization purposes, but I’ve been too lazy to do that. I might get around to that next month. You need to let me know if/when I manage to out-stupid any of them. I think there's a whole subreddit dedicated to these types of pictures. This gave me a shower thought. Why do soldering irons have a long shaft that is also burning hot? I mean other than, uh... melting cheese? (I've never melted cheese this way. I've never had to use stuff beyond the tip.) They should add some sort of shielding to it.

Fancier, more expensive irons put the heater into the tip as a cartridge. Also, so far your soldering looks serviceable, though you have a bit too much solder on most of the pins... A bit blobby, you want a nice concave fillet instead. Keep it up (and you will want a proper iron, especially for smt)

Also, this might be a good read for you: http://www.ipctraining.org/demos/pdf/drm-pth-f.pdf Its a demo subsection of IPC J-STD-001/ IPC-A-610 , the industry standard for soldering.
