Devil 2 - AAR for Pandora's Box Day 2

Plan:
Destroy fuel tanks and ammunition bunkers at WP Rome. If GBU-12 left over, request additional tasking from Bulldozer; probable taskings to engage armour from Gallery to Atlanta.

BDA:
All targets at Rome destroyed. 2 x SPAAG and 1x BMP destroyed on Sherman

(ooc: the tanks still standing took multiple GBU-12 hits. We assume the model is bugged.)

Flight Members:
Devil 2 flight - 4 x F/A-18C Lot 20
Devil 2-1: Snapshot, landed without incident
Devil 2-2: radintorov, landed without incident
Devil 2-3: Prime - late substitution, battle damage forced rtb after Rome attack
Devil 2-4: Sauer - late addition, a/c destroyed over rome engaging hind. No chute observed. Pilot MIA.

Loadout:
2x GBU-31(V)3/B 2000lb GPS Guided penetrator bomb (2-4 swapped for 4x AIM-120C-5 for self escort)
4x GBU-12 500lb Laser Guided Bomb
2x AIM-9X IR AAM
1x AIM-120C-5 Active Radar AAM
1x AN/AAQ 28 Litening Targeting Pod
1x FPU-8A Fuel Tank, 330 Gallons

Flight plan and fuel observations:
13000 lbs fuel onboard, Bingo 2900 lbs.
Held south of Rome until Reno neutralized, engaged Rome per targeting plan, continued through atlanta, engaging armor and SPAAG on Sherman. Munitions expended just before Bingo. Minimum fuel at landing was 900 lbs.
In future missions, tanker should be used before proceeding to secondary tasking, or reserve and landing fuel budget should be adjusted to 2500 lbs from 2000 lbs.

METAR:
Not relayed to flights, strong east to west crosswind observed during takeoff and landing.

Radio Plan:
Radio 1 - Bulldozer/Tower
Radio 2 - Wind Maker, Enfield, otherwise as needed
MIDS A - Devil 2 intra flight.

-----
Takeoff and marshalling:
Some issues with takeoff sequence; order not explicitly announced in mission commander's brief. Tower seemed to be sequencing aircraft on a first come, first served basis. METAR not communicated, strong crosswinds seen upon takeoff nearly caused 2-1 to drag a wing.
https://i.imgur.com/kysKq4L.mp4
Climb initiated too soon after takeoff, leading to inefficient climb profile. Some issues with formation communicated, flight lead was too close to mil power to allow formation to stay tight due to early climb. Lead needs to only use 95% mil power and needs to communicate speeds during flight or notify flight what values to chase on FPAS page.

Ingress, and target:
Good formation on ingress allowed short time between impacts during initial pass. Pre planning and entry of target waypoints into DTC allowed for quick acquisition and verification of targets. Good sort on initial attack due to waypoints and target planning allowed for 4 targets to be successfully engaged on the initial pass without overtargeting. Pilot issues with TOO with waypoint designate sequencing lead to 2-1 releasing the second GBU-31 late. The bomb impacted a hill north of the target while correcting. 2-3 was able to engage on the second pass without issue.
https://i.imgur.com/8tQMDwW.mp4
Egress:
Post attack, helicopters were observed in the area and 2-3 and 4 were released to engage per Bulldozer's direction. 2-3 was engaged and damaged by a SA-19 after an attack pass at low altitude.
https://i.imgur.com/yoDYbVb.mp4
2-3 immediately returned to base with the damaged jet, landing at the local airport beside Tbilisi. A maintenance crew was sent over to verify the aircraft was flight worthy, and it was returned to Tbilisi without incident after the operation. Maintainers are currently assessing the scope of the damage to the jet.
2-4 engaged 2 separate Mi-24 helicopters, however neither was damaged enough to be forced down, and was destroyed by an ATGM launched from one of the engaged hinds. No chute was observed, and Sauer is MIA at this time.
https://i.imgur.com/Ob96a6H.mp4

Secondary: After the Rome tasking, bulldozer directed devil 2 to engage targets north of Atlanta. Multiple groups were observed, and 3 vehicles were engaged. 2-2 had to relay co-ordinates for the observed vehicles, as 2-1 was unable to use LSS to home in on the targets. Possibly related to a failure for lgbs to guide from 2-2. Shortly after all ordinance was expended, both aircraft reached bingo fuel state and returned to base independently.

Landing: Tower should sequence non-carrier capable aircraft ahead of f-18s and other carrier capable aircraft or allow greater separation. Weasel 1-1 was behind Devil 2-2 and was required to go around when s-turns were insufficient to increase separation.
https://i.imgur.com/7p5JOhd.mp4

-----
Analysis: Preplanning static targets is effective; preplanned waypoints allowed for rapid acquisition and verification. GBU expenditure was as planned and redundancy was required to successfully complete the mission due to a pilot error. 1 rack of LGBs on all aircraft should have been switched out for GBU-38s, allowing single pass destruction of Rome, as 2 GBUs in one pass with TOO/WPDESG is feasible.
Helicopters should not be engaged inside of 5nm. Stand off weapons should be employed if absolutely necessary, otherwise avoid and let SHORAD or attack helicopters engage the threat.
Any wind observed on take-off should be communicated to the tower immediately, as flights after also struggled with gusts.

e:fixed static gifs.

Bulldozer AAR - Day 2

All flights departed under watchful eye of Tblisi Tower. Windmaker and I kept an eye on the border, some confusion initially about no-fly zone in Abkhazia but we ignored that area after seeing the Russian flights on a racetrack. DEAD flights went in first with minimal input from myself. I checked in a couple of times and then had the all clear. Strikers followed with the tunnel collapsed in an almost anti-climactic explosion. Supply dump also went down pretty quickly.

Red rotary around Atlanta area was a nuisance that I should have warned everyone about and just left alone. They would have presented a threat to the Frogfoot flight, but looking back if they'd been properly warned by myself we could have mitigated the issue. I only called back two aircraft from the No-Fly zone, but we never crossed it and all flights did amazing following that border. Until this point the Flight Leads plans all went well and if I'd just called RTB at this point I think the day would have been a smashing success. Sure we had some losses but all pre-defined targets were dealt with.

Instead...

We heard comms traffic and saw some icons on LotATC but I didn't know what was going on. At first I thought it was ground units, but then we saw the air speed and I had WindMaker send a Pontiac to go check it out. Follow this with confusion about Russian / Georgian vehicles and it wasn't clear what exactly was on the ground there. There was a Spetnatz attack during the last mission that was repelled. I expected that there would be Georgian ground units there, so we didn't think it was anything except a Hind strike. Which of course it wasn't.

In hindsight I never should have tasked Devil over there, they weren't equipped to properly deal with either rotary assets or ground units. If anything I should have told them to keep at 25k plus, observe, and RTB. I dealt with an almost exact situation like this during one of the CMO Lets Plays and saw how devastating Hind's can be in the proper environment. I hosed this one up. Everyone did as they were asked, I just asked you to do the wrong thing.

After this we had a Flanker and Fencer incursion that was quickly swatted by Pontiac.

Enfield completed the textbook armor strike and all flights RTB'd.

What Went Well

All pre-planned ops. Seriously, all of the defined missions went great. Everything the Flight Leads set out to do went off without a hitch. The tunnel is closed. The supply dump is hosed. The SAM sites are blapped. The Armor column was Vikhr'd. Windmaker did great as did Tblisi Tower. Once Bulldozer tasking was done I listened in and everyone was damned professional on that Fencer strike and final landing.

What Didn't Work

Any new tasking. As soon as I sent someone off on a task outside of a defined role it was a poo poo sandwich. Everyone was briefed, focused, and ready for a defined mission and I hosed that up sending you to do something else just because you had fuel left. From a narrative standpoint I'll leave hanging bad stuff (like the Kutaisi Situation) as a cliff hanger for the next chapter. Though differentiating between "narrative" and "tasking" may be tricky. If anything we'll have a secondary task defined so if your DEAD or Strike goes awesome you can assist someone somewhere else then go home. Next time totally just say "Bulldozer, the beer is getting warm, we're loving off and RTB'ing. This isn't a good task for us."

I found after that my mic as quiet on SRS, I'll get that squared before the next mission. Not sure what happened as nothing changed from the previous op.

Next Op

However our Russian friends respond I think we've got good resources on hand to deal with it. We'll stick with the mission profiles that we have been and have everyone keep a secondary role in mind. So if for example Enfield has a hard time with rotary then Devil flight can nail them with some AGM-65's. (If we have them :staredog:) I heard quite a few people reporting GBU's falling short, while others didn't have issues. I'm not sure the issue here but if your flight ran into issues please discuss it.

Keep up the good work Squadron.

A safety-conscious little mouse!
GBUs (Paweway II) will fall short if you don't have enough speed/altitude. They're dumb as gently caress and will bleed all their speed doing full deflection corrections from the moment they acquire the laser.

Lase later, up the speed, deliberately overshoot the release point, practice in-game.

Pontiac 2 After Action Report

3x F-14B Tomcat from Kutaisi.

1x Tomcat left at Tbilisi due to last week’s maintenance issues.

Pontiac 2-1: Vähäkylä/Angel
Pontiac 2-2: Terran/Lumme
Pontiac 2-3: KingCrab/Madman Theory

What we were supposed to do: Plan of action was to do CAP south of the Russian border and be ready for ABM tasking.

What we did: We took off from Kutaisi and flew to CAP area. Then Kutaisi was taken over by Russian forces and Pontiac 2-3 was tasked to do aerial reconnaissance above the airport. After that we enforced the integrity of the no-fly zone by preventing any crossings by bandits. We returned to base at Tbilisi, our contingency airport, instead of at Kutaisi as originally planned.

What we did well: We had no serious mechanical failures this time, and we were present and available to the air battle manager when we were needed, both for aerial recon and for enforcing the no-fly zone.

What could have been done better: There were apparently some radio troubles in the 2-2 aircraft leading to a temporary loss of communication with flight lead. More experienced crew members could have spent some time working with them on that before take-off. We’ll try to remedy that situation before the next mission.

Significant events:
2-3 engaged a MiG-31 near the Abkhazian border
2-3 did aerial recon of Kutaisi Airport at 25,000ft, reported fire and battle
2-1 visually identified a civilian airliner that had wandered through the no-fly zone
2-1 and 2-2 engaged a two-ship of Su-24 Fencers and a two-ship of Su-27 Flankers, destroyed two Fencers and one Flanker. Last flanker turned back towards and across the Russian border.

Claimed aerial victories:
1x MiG-31
2x Su-24
1x Su-27
All of unknown origin. No visual ID of red stars.
2-2 reported good parachutes on the splashed planes.

Important: I have been informed that all our maintenance crews and munitions were taken by the hostile act at Kutaisi. We are unable to get more AIM-54 Phoenixes at this time due to no other ally or airframe using them. Our flight returned with three phoenixes from this mission, and from Day 1 there was one Tomcat that stayed behind at Tbilisi due to maintenance issues that had four phoenixes in it. That means we have total combined 7 AIM-54s at this time, and we are unable to get more for Day 3. More to follow on other maintenance issues.

I'll echo Snapshot, this is a pretty chill group and if you want to dip your toes into the world of Aerial Violence a Frogfoot is a great way to do it. Worst case scenario you crash or are shot down. These aircraft are incredibly versatile and fill a perfect spot for a new person to dive in and enjoy themselves.

Yoinking Pontiac 2's AAR format.

Pontiac 1 After Action Report

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yE7yAqwhn54

2x F-15C from Tbilisi.

Pontiac 1-1: ninjahedgehog aka wrathcough
Pontiac 1-2: HerpicleOmicron5

What we were supposed to do: BARCAP on the south side of the no-fly zone, intercept any Russian encroachment and protect the strike planes from enemy fighters.

What we did: Took off from Tblisi and assumed a racetrack 25 miles south of the no-fly zone.

First engagement- Pontiac 1 flight was fired upon by an SA-6 on the other side of the border, both F-15s engaged in defensive maneuvers and easily shook off the missile.

Second engagement- Pontiac 1 flight was directed to intercept a MiG-31 crossing the no-fly zone. The Foxhound was flying in a notching angle and was difficult to pick up on radar until we were very close; however, the bandit turned cold and exited Georgian airspace once Pontiac 1-1 acquired a missile lock.

Third engagement- Pontiac 1 flight was directed to intercept a four-ship element of Russian planes -- two Su-27 Flankers and two Su-24 Fencers -- crossing the border at low altitude. The bandits did not respond to missile lock, so Pontiac 1 flight each launched two AIM-120C AMRAAMs at the Russian formation. Both Pontiac planes splashed a Fencer each, and the Flankers decided to turn around rather than risk engaging the Eagles.

Fourth engagement- Pontiac 1 flight was directed to RTB; however, the order was delayed to intercept another Russian incursion into the no-fly. Pontiac 1-1 splashed an Su-25 Frogfoot with an AMRAAM snapshot while Pontiac 1-2 attempted to engage a Ka-50 Hokum-A at low altitude. Pontiac 1-2 was forced to abort this engagement after being fired upon by several SA-19 batteries, but expertly evaded at least four missiles and managed to exfiltrate the combat area safely.

RTB- Pontiac 1-1 landed without incident. Pontiac 1-2 ran out of fuel on final approach, however, and suffered a left engine flameout at low altitude. Pontiac 1-2, realizing that his right engine would soon suffer fuel exhaustion as well without room to safely land the aircraft while gliding, put his throttle to full afterburner to gain a last bit of altitude to clear the airfield fence. Pontiac 1-2 managed to land the aircraft without harm to the aircraft or pilot despite extremely difficult circumstances, and his commanding officer wrathcough will be filing a letter of commendation for this feat.

What we did well: Superlative air-to-air engagements, three victories for zero losses and minimal wasted ordnance. Flying 25 miles south of the border allowed Pontiac 1 flight ample room to acquire and intercept bandits without accidentally crossing the no-fly, a marked improvement over Day 1.

What could have been done better: Fuel management -- Pontiac 1-2 misread his fuel gauge and overestimated his fuel remaining. He has been ordered to study the flight manual before next week's sortie.

Claimed aerial victories:
2x Su-24 Fencer
1x Su-25 Frogfoot

Total campaign victories:
ninjahedgehog: 1x MiG-29, 1x Su-24, 1x Su-25
HerpicleOmicron5: 1x Su-24
Alchenar: 1x MiG-29

To: Commander, Hävittäjälentolaivue 11, Ilmavoimat

I write to give you my report of my safe return. After ejecting a few miles east of Kutaisi, I was able to walk to a nearby highway and begin my hitchhiking journey to Tbilisi thanks to a bemused and enthusiastic Georgian trucker. I always keep a bottle of Finnlandia in my survival pack in case of expeditious friend-making needs. We also picked up a young USN Petty Officer 3rd Class, who I will discuss in more detail later.

First, yes, it did take a couple days to get back. I did not utilize my emergency radio, as I had reported my intent to eject, and given the disastrous security situation and breached communications, I did not want to risk Russians triangulating my emergency radio.

Second, our gracious driver, Giorgi, had several deliveries to make on the trip from the outskirts of Kutaisi to Tbilisi. I will forward a list of my travel expenses, as I had to pay many of Giorgi's and my expenses out of pocket, including his purchase of "How to speak Russian" audio tapes. I elected not inform Giorgi that my flight lead and I were the ones who blew up the tunnel so important to his occupation. I am sure a cross-organization line of accounting can bill this travel and per diem to NATO rather than to the Finnish accounts?

A note: I do not know why the US Navy ground crew wear those funny blue uniforms. They did nothing to camouflage them as they were cut down by 23mm cannon, 12.7mm machine guns, and small arms fire, which I had the misfortune to witness in part after engaging an Mi-24 and as I looked over my shoulder to watch an Igla chase after me. (the 9X is overpriced trash by the way. An AIM-9M or AIM-9P5 would have made short work of that Hind or even an R-60 from the old days of flying MiG-21s under Kekkonen).

The good news for the F-18 as an aircraft is that it likely survived the first Igla shot with just some minor damage, but the invaders showed up with a lot of Igla shooters, so they hit me 3 times in one pass. That was one too many Iglas, but a tough bird! XD

Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael Che is a clerical MOS (Yeoman?) who was fortunate to already be near the base exit at the time the Russians attacked the base and slaughtered his squadron-mates. He had been sent on an errand to find very fancy cardstock on which to print awards for excellence for the Tomcat aviators. He said he heard one of the last broadcasts from a Tomcat Pilot by the name of LTJG Vähäkylä saying “Not my problem,” as the Tomcats left the area, their engines momentarily drowning out the screams of his dying comrades. I told him maybe this was an enemy psyop broadcast...

Anyway, now that we are back, I will unfortunately be unable to fly the next mission or two, as I am undergoing a battery of medical examinations related to my physical and psychological trauma. I am making sure they are all uploaded into the medical system for my retirement packet. As you know, I retire very soon, in 2017, so I need to document these issues thoroughly.

I hope that Yeoman Che is able to get some counseling soon. I saw him at the dining facility the other day, where he was waiting to eat until all the US Naval officers had been served and seated in their lounge, and he said that his behavioral health appointment had been postponed indefinitely. The Navy behavioral health specialist expected to be too hungover from a “sick rager” that the Tomcat aviators are throwing, and so had cleared all appointments. Yeoman Che said he planned to spend the evening building a scrapbook in memory of Chief Petty Officer Dana Williams and the rest of the enlisted team, many of whom were killed in action during the ambush on the flight line, while they were preparing for post-flight maintenance of their Tomcats. He is hopeful that some of those from his unit who are MIA are found alive.

Ystävällisin terveisin - Med vänlig hälsning - Kind regards,

Re: [!] Requesting exfiltration from secret safe-house in Kutaisi

Commander,

Whilst I do not like to refer to myself and my comrades as heroes, our brave actions at Kutaisi have unfortunately forced us to abandon our ships over Kutaisi. Once I had exited my aircraft, I had to abandon most of my gear as it was trapped irrecoveribly in a dungheap dangerous terrain. While I hid from cautiously observed the Russian troops from a safe distance, I had to sustain myself by feeding on a plate of kinkhali and beer a laughing farmer offered me berries and water that I foraged from the Georgian wilderness. Using my great intercultural and social skills I embedded within the local population. They provided me with a disguise and hid me at their dinner table. After charming them with tales of our exploits and bravery, I made out with the farmer's daughter in a hay stack recruited a female resistance fighter from the local populace as informant. However, her brother chased me from the property I had to exfiltrate quickly as to not endanger her as Russian troops were quickly approaching. Once the coast was clear, my informant drove me to a internet café secret hideout in Kataisi proper. Please pick me up at the Kutaisi McDonad's on Tblisi Street 1. You will recognize me by my shrewd disguise (a battered jeans and plaid shirt).

This came in about 20 minutes ago, we had a brief call and this will be one of several objectives. We're waiting on NATO clarification of further requirements. Importantly I've requested clarification if the 1st Eng. Bn. has Flamethrowers. Why flamethrowers? Well, what better way to determine friendlies from hostiles if the friendlies have flamethrowers?

Georgian SpecOps have eyes on the "Not Russian" Abkhazian separatist people. They are holding fire and will operate as JTAC's once ops begin.

This will be objective PIGPEN, more tasking and details to follow.

I've reached out to the Iranians through a Swedish delegation to see if they will trade Iranski Phoenix's for Ikea furniture. More to come.

Commander Yooper, you are to choose some courses of action for next saturday:

The Area of Operations:
South Ossetia

Current situation: Roki Tunnel is destroyed, but some not-Russian defenders were left behind. Your main mission is to destroy these forces, which will decide the victory condition of the next mission.

To achieve victory, two out of three conditions will have to be filled:

-Destruction of Armored Company B
-Destruction of Armored Company C
-Destruction of both russian auxiliary munition depots, both inside busy civilian areas

(Armored Company A was thoroughly destroyed by Frogfoots in last mission)

Victory means that the Georgian Gori Tank Battalion secures South Ossetia firmly into Georgian hands.
Loss means that some not-Russian hold is still maintained over it in the future.

You have two additional side objectives:

You will receive a reinforcement flight in the form of four C-17s from Turkey that will have to be escorted in. You will get a say on their flight path. They will also offer you a choice of one of three:

-All model Mavericks
-Most model Cluster Bombs
-Additional AIM-54 Phoenixes and US Navy Maintainers

You can choose to commit to the recapture of Kutaisi Airfield that is held by the prior force:

-Committing requires PGM equipped fighters to assist a ground JTAC, likely eight total.

-Not committing will not fail your main mission and will conserve flights to the main AO.

Not capturing Kutaisi will remain a thorn in your side in the future. It is not a major plot device, but will be a diplomatic issue as the Georgians want your help on it.

Let us know soon.

The prognosis
is not good.

I think we can accomplish all three conditions, plus escort the C-17s and help retake Kutasi. To do anything less would be shameful.

I suspect we could do CAP with 2 pontiac flights, the tomcats and one of the other. Perhaps let the migs or eagles strike. If we can get a full Pontiac 2 in the air, two two-ships of F-14s are formidable.

TO: Commander Yooper, EUNGJFACC
FROM: Capt. Hedgehog, 123rd Fighter Squadron, Oregon ANG

After consulting with F-15 and F-14 Wikipedia specifications crew chiefs from both the Oregon ANG and the USN, we have determined that the F-15C has a maximum effective combat range of 1,061 nautical miles as compared to the F-14B's 500 nautical miles. In addition, there are four Tomcats in battle-ready configuration compared to just two Eagles. I recommend that Pontiac 2 flight perform fighter sweep and BARCAP above the Kutaisi strike operation -- where they can easily refuel and rearm from Tbilisi as needed -- while Pontiac 1 escorts the C-17s in from Turkey. The Eagles will have plenty of fuel to bring the Globemasters safely home, including any potential intercepts needed against Russian aggression.

A Communique From the NATO Bureau of Logistics and Armaments, General Josef Marxer of the Newly Established Liechtenstein Air Force presiding

Greetings pilots!

I have run our Flight Assessment Program to generate cost reports for our operation. While we have achieved our objectives, and I should note that our weapons were employed in a very accurate, and therefore cost effective, manner. Unfortunately, excessive airframe losses continue to drive up operational costs.

Congratulations to Pontiac 2-1 | Vähäkylä / Angel for being the most cost effective overall, closely seconded by WEASEL 1-1 | BEAR. Devil-1 Flight is credited with the destruction of Roki tunnel, with estimated damages of $400 million which was divided among flight members. Devil 1-1 | Jarmak is therefore credited as causing the most destruction over the course of the mission. Thanks to the accurate employment of weapons, everyone who did not lose an airframe has an excellent cost ratio and should be commended.

However, despite the achievements of the package, there are a few less sunny matters to attend to. Firstly, I have observed that the ground crew has loaded more GBU-31s than I recall issuing to Devil-1. As a result, the JDAM handlers have been sacked. JDAMs will be unavailable until the JDAM handler replacements are trained. Additionally, Kutaisi had the bulk of the Phoenix stockpile: as a result of its loss, we have only 7 left. I have made the decision to additionally freeze this inventory, to be released in the event Kutaisi is retaken or if we have credible intelligence of cruise missile threats.

In other news, pilot Bears.is.Flying has had their fratricide charges dropped, and the inventory of Mavericks is available for use again. However, much of the inventory was also in Kutaisi, so the supply is very limited for now.

Disturbing rumor out of Russia. Its claimed the fuel tanks near the bunkers predated the bunkers construction, and contained a slurry of animal feces used by farmers for fertilization. Unverified images of the closest town being bedecked in brown, with shocked children covered head to toe in what is suspected to be, to quote a report, "khleb"

Our intelligence department reluctantly confirms the same model of Ural fuel truck used to pump fuel to the tanks is in fact also used for sewage and septic tank emptying. While not impossible, it IS conceivable that the trucks seen fueling there were filling the tanks with animal waste. It was felt at the time that the chance of the tanks contents being fecal in nature was too slim to merit consideration.

Drullusokkur.

Some very interesting choices here.

I'll start with the armored forces.

We'll have eight (8) F-16's and eight (8) SU-25T's available to hit assets trapped near the tunnel. 16 aircraft should be more than enough when we did it last time with mostly Enfield. I'd like our F-16's, who so awesomely did DEAD last time, to use the newly released AGM-65's to sanitize that area of MI-26 and KA-50's. Those F-16's can also fit with some PGM's to strike those auxiliary depots in civilian areas. F-16 Flight leads, please advise on best loadout. SU-25T's, Arbitrary and Bonkers, do what you do best; kill tanks.

Now, the C-17's...

Cluster bombs are out. We're not going there. This isn't Fulda. AGM-65's have the greatest potential for structured violence. As much as I'd like a load of free Phoenix's, I think we can retake Kutaisi and get (some) munitions back for our Tomcats that way. All in all I think Maverick's provide a greater bang-for-buck to the strikers whereas a Tomcat with a Sparrow is still mission effective. Our Mavericks had some of the highest kill-cost ratio scores on mission #1, I'd like more. Especially as I think we'll see more rotary threats.

Kutaisi

Devil 1-1 is going to provide support to those flamethrower wielding Georgian Engineers. I want Kutaisi back. Even if we can't use it, it demonstrates to the Russians our resolve and it gets us some Phoenix's for the F-14's. Plus I think Devil 1 Flight would love a little payback.

CAP

1st, is there still a no-fly zone as defined in the previous mission?

Pontiac Flight Leads, Wrathcough & Angel, with the loss of the MIG-29's we're two birds short. I'm looking to put Angel and Pontiac 2 on BARCAP to preserve that No Fly zone. Wrathcough and Pontiac 1 will be tasked with bringing those C-17's in. Flight path will be such that there is a big fat pile of our aircraft between hostiles and C-17's. In the event of a larger incursion we'll task the Strikers to assist to preserve those C-17's.

We have Devil 2 flight available for tasking, I'm thinking of having them as backup PGM lobber / CAP, and hold back to respond as needed.

Dandy, Squadron S2

Can you procure any intel on disposition and/or location of the remaining armor in B & C company as well as details on those munitions dumps? Any intel on new threats we should be aware of?

Enfield flight honored the tenacious legacy of my father by destroying over 2 dozen Russian armored vehicles. I know perhaps that the total cost of those vehicles don't even show up on NATO's tally, however we single handedly blunted the enemy's advance that would have certainly wiped out the defenses of Tskhinvali. We will shed blood until the last invader is swept from our land, and the sun rises upon a Georgia made whole.

Lawsuit is claiming handlers only outfitted 4 GBU-31(V) with penetrator warheads on devil flight, additional GBU-31s used in the strike were older conventional MK-84-based models that were not covered in the general's communique.

How did this smug dummkopf ever make general?

Pontiac 1-2 AAR

Following Flight Lead's report, I'd like to submit my own to highlight the experience from an individual pilot's perspective.

What we were supposed to do: BARCAP - Sortie from Tblisi to patrol the south side no-fly zone, in the mountain ranges.

What we did: Both sorties were from Tblisi. Both sorties saw equally poor takeoffs from myself, though apparently the second one featured crosswind? I never noticed this, so at least I can guarantee consistency!

First engagement- 1-1 was engaged by a hostile SAM site. I saw smoke, and not knowing the different capabilities of SA sites, joined 1-1 in defensive manoeuvres, lagging behind and above. I'd hoped my countermeasures would help in the defence, but I think I only wasted fuel and stores.

Second engagement- Pontiac 1 was directed to intercept a Mig-31. It wasn't showing up on our radar, so I increased separation from 1-1 to widen our search pattern, hoping that the new geometry would allow us to bypass the notch. Unsure of the tactic's effectiveness. It felt right at least!

Third engagement- Pontiac 1 was directed to intercept a mixed four-ship of Russian aircraft, Fencers and Frogfoots. This was when I discovered a lack of a "Missile Lock" binding, as well as DCS no longer recognising the buttons on my joystick. Maintenance crew were likely worried that I would cross the border again and try to escalate the war. After accidentally firing thirty rounds from my cannon, I launched 2 AIM-120s at a target while in an STT lock. In future, I should change to TWS when engaging multiple targets - though I only detected one hostile. I successfully splashed a Fencer, though I made no confirmation that the pilot ejected.

Note: Following this engagement, I requested permission to turn back and kill them all. Permission was denied, but this provides a good example as to the mental state I was in at this point in the sortie. Consider that we'd been flying for a while at this point, our first A2A engagement was scuffed, and finally, we had targets we could kill.

Fourth engagement- According to Flight Lead's AAR, Pontiac 1 was told to RTB. I have no recollection of this order. I do however, recall being informed of SU-25 Frogfoots penetrating the no-fly zone. I immediately vectored towards them, and believed I had visually acquired the target. I was not successful in engaging them, however, having lost lock likely due to terrain. I regained a radar contact, but could not lock them up. This is where things got dangerous. I fumbled with the radio, requesting that AWACS Wind Maker declare the target off my nose, and while that happened I heard noises in my cockpit which I tuned out in order to listen to Wind Maker.

Those noises were, as I discovered on playback of the flight recording, "Missile. 12 o'clock low. Missile. 12 o'clock low. Missile. 12 o'clock low." It was a sheer fluke that allowed me to survive. Later I discovered this was an SA-19 site. Tunguska missiles are extremely deadly, and I have never successfully evaded them intentionally.

RTB- I immediately identified that the prior engagement, plus a misunderstanding regarding instrument readouts, had left me starved of fuel. I cruised towards Tblisi at a comfortable altitude, around 10,000ft ASL, though I struggled to see my HUD instruments through the sun. I misidentified the runway, lining up for approach at the adjacent Soganlug airfield. At this point, I saw the readout start ticking between 100 and 0. I set my engines to idle - a move that in retrospect likely saved me, as GNN footage shows that I experienced a left engine flameout, if my engines were still running it would be likely that would send me into a deadly spin - until I expended full afterburner for one last push over a treeline and some fencing. The push was unsuccessful, but it granted me enough energy to swerve the obstacles.

The landing itself was among the smoothest I've made. Both engines ran completely dry attempting to taxi after touchdown.

What we did well: I feel like combat tactics and non-combat manoeuvre advice were a strong point during this sortie. Formation turning was also a high point.

What could have been done better: Weapons employment and tunnel vision. I should've splashed at least two bandits during the third engagement, and I shouldn't have been anywhere near that SA-19 site.

Fuel management was perfect though. What's the point of having it if you're not going to use it?
