3,000 soldiers were not lost. that is the estimated amount of troops which would have gone into the airfield in kyiv based on the seating capacity of the number of aircraft allegedly on standby, IF russian troopers were able to hold it

russia probably lost 100-200 soldiers in the initial attack, whose job it was to clear and hold the airfield until backup comes. unfortunately for them, they got swamped by a much larger force of ukrainian infantry before backup came

Order of Gostomel airport battle as far as anyone can tell

~15-30 russian transport helicopters with several attack helicopter escorts are filmed flying towards the airport. At least a couple were shot down either on the approach or as they departed, including at least one of the very new ka-52s (known because there's footage of the pilot ejecting, which, for obvious reasons, is not a feature most helicopters have). Helicopters were apparently targeted both with surface AA and by Ukranian jets

Some sounds of scattered fighting around airport, this is roughly the time of the eponymous cnn video

Russians call off plans to send in reenforcements via heavy transport because if Ukranian AA/AF still exists enough to shoot down helicopters, there is no chance you are getting transports in. Supposedly ukranians covered the runway in tractors and broken heavy machinery and poo poo to make it unusable, but I've seen no pictures of it, so who knows if it is true or not.

Ukranians start shelling stranded russian airborne forces in the airport

No, it's more like between 2,300-4,400 that they didn't get to drop right by the big flashing red target of Kyiv.

If all of the information (especially those drone strikes, jfc) is even semi-accurate, the Russians are getting lit the gently caress up and they will not win a war of attrition especially in a modern urban warfare environment where the good guys have good tech and the rest of the world has their backs.

I don't know what Putin can actually do since he seems stuck, he can't retreat because he's Putin but it also seems impossible that he could ever hold control of Ukraine so this is a waste for him and the longer the invasion lasts the more damaged Russia's economy is and the more his army gets mangled if the reports so far are accurate.

Their only gains seem to be in the South which Ukraine abandoned as far as I know? The map posted earlier was surprising as I thought Russia already controlled much more of Eastern Ukraine before the invasion due to the supposed separatists and officially recognizing them as independent, but it looks like they haven't made much progress on the front I think everyone assumed would be their strongest.

Maybe he miscalculated and thought he could succeed with a small push and a much larger and more aggressive one is coming in the future but I'm wondering what state the Russian military will be in after a week or two if this continues. How long until his orders cannot be fulfilled because there isn't the men/equipment to carry them out?

They are clearly still flying out of somewhere. Not only are they doing air interdiction still, but ground support missions—at least near Kiev.

I’m not sure they mean to push eastern front hard yet. The play seems to be that Crimean and Kharkiv forces encircle Donbas frontline, since otherwise Russians are looking at frontal assault on 60 thousand soldiers manning anti-artillery fortifications they’ve built over the course of 8 years.
