it is possible that there is a future where russia takes advantage of a neutered ukraine to continue gray zone activities and destabilize ukraine again, but also there is a world where they scream "no surrender" as their country is burned to the ground and ukrainian independence is effectively eliminated. the options are not particularly ideal. i would probably surrender and take the deal, again presuming the russsians are serious.

Nations, tribes, and empires have tried to “ eliminate” Ukrainian independence for between 800 to 1000 years depending on how you reckon between Rus, Ruthenian, and ZUNR. How has that worked out?

Honestly my best hope for an outcome for this whole poo poo is a palace coup to get rid of him and install someone new who agrees to take a much less confrontational stance and cede everything back to ukraine in exchange for repealing the sanctions and presumably replacing them with reparations.

Its what Kazakhstan did during its protests, its what the tatmadaw did after taking power in burma, on the side of using it for good (v rare) its what Sri Lanka did to try to prevent race riots and anti-muslim mobs after the Easter Bombings.

It is a very bad sign for their assessment of how this is going down at home.

Also I don't think dropping AK-47's is a good idea. Not least because, well, arming people who have no experience of using firearms is likely to result in an awful lot of people either killing their families, each other, or forces on their own side that they are confused about.

Eh, they tried to, though - it's literally in their constitution that they have to try to join. I think the lesson is, "if you really, really think you can get all the NATO member-states to vote for you to join, join NATO. If not, you can't rely on them."

I think it's brave of Finland to say that they might join, but I don't know if that's really on the table for them vis-a-vis existing member-states.
