OK, real dumb question because I could argue either way on pure design: Are tank hatches generally designed to lock from the inside to keep people from climbing on and flinging in grenades/molotovs/bullets, or are they generally designed to be openable from the outside to allow the chance for someone to open the hatch and get to the crew to get them out? My knowledge of russian armor stops at Afghanistan, and my impression is that nobody at any level gives a poo poo about the people inside, so "weld them in a hope they don't burn to death" and "a locking mechanism is western decadence that might allow the troops to survive" both seem valid.

Hatches generally open from both sides, but the crew can lock them from the inside. e: These locks simply prevent the handle from being operated. I'd be amazed if Russian/Soviet designs didn't have them. If the crew locks themselves in, there's no easy way of getting them out.

It's not so much that they're the most important as it is that they're the easiest thing to break that will effectively disable the tank. That said, I wasn't a tanker but my understanding is changing treads in the field is one of the core things armored crew train on. So it's usually also a temporary thing. Unless they catch them unbuttoned the Molotovs are mostly blinding in effect on MBTs. Humvee/MRAP-class poo poo though have all sorts of openings (like the open turret) if they're anything like ours.

I am not an expert on Russian armor but tanks are generally designed to be employed at greater distances than one in which your enemy is close enough to throw things at it. Even infantry support armor relies upon infantry to keep the enemy from climbing up on it or attacking from blind spots. If you bring unsupported armor into an urban environment it’s only a matter of time before the crew get taken out.

Some of the analysis I read leading up to the war suggested that Russia's doctrine is still over-dependent upon the premise of armor-centric combined arms engagements at range, without enough attention paid to urban operations. It looks like Ukraine has been exploiting this tactically and engaging the Russians in ambushes and up close, where they're less effective.

Molotov are fine against trucks and what not but what really works on tanks is water balloons/buckets with paint on the hot engine hatch. Tends to catch on fire just fine and wreck engines. Don’t even have to bother with lighting them.

Someone probably learned something from Chechnya, yeah, but they didn't bother passing that on to the 19-year old conscripts that actually got sent into Ukraine, who seem to mostly want to just stay holed up inside their vehicles rather than provide infantry screens against ambushes.

The starkest thing to me is the lack of drones. In the Armenian-Azerbaijan fight a while back probably half the footage was drones shooting stuff or getting shot down. I have yet to see any indication either side is using drones extensively.
