Yeah he's got a fine voice and is even a pretty good speaker, I watched a couple of his writing classes (I don't write, it was just fun ) and he seemed perfectly fine at it. Reading is something totally different though, especially reading characters. It's a performance, and he's not a performer.

Classic Brandon. "I'm adding even more scenes to Wax & Wayne 4. Hopefully I'll finish the last 20% of the book today though. He has some big news he "needs to talk to us about" regarding "how his career is going to go" though could just be my imagination but he looks/sounds "off" in this video? Hope he's not sick or anything Sab669 fucked around with this message at 17:21 on Feb 28, 2022 |

This makes me worried a bit, although admittedly it's a pretty small worry compared to the big thing going on right now. How could his career go differently? There were a lot of collaborations in his non-Cosmere works, will he concentrate on Stormlight and be the big outline guy while others write Mistborn/Warbreaker 2/etc.?

Jose Valasquez posted:Could be something like "I'm burnt out, I'm taking a year off from writing to do other stuff" It's going to be this. Sanderson just put up this pinned comment on the weekly update video: Brandon Sanderson posted:Just wanted to say that I appreciate the well wishes, everyone. You don't need to worry overly much about me, though. This relates to something I was forced to do for my own mental and writing health, but I took the action I needed to take, and because of that I am doing quite well. Tomorrow will explain more. If you guys remember, this is the first time he's changed up his writing process. He normally does 8 hours of writing a day, split into 2 4-hour sessions and normally he focuses on seriously working on one project at a time, and he alternates between writing and revising projects. This year, because of promises he's made around the Stormlight books and other things, he's split his workflow: one of the 4-hour sessions is writing new prose (Stormlight) and the other 4-hour session is revising (Wax & Wayne). My guess is, this change has not been working. He probably tried it and found he just could not get into the right frame of mind for Stormlight and so has been using time that was supposed to be Stormlight time to revise Wax & Wayne, or to take a break. Or he might have tried doing Stormlight and just knew that something was off because he's not happy with the way the new stuff is going or for the first time in a long time, he can't force his way through the rough draft. Also note the expanded scenes for Wax & Wayne. I've just started doing post beta reader revisions on my novel today and while I'm obviously not Sanderson, I follow his writing methods very closely because they work for me. I would guess that the expanded scenes are needed because there are plot/character arcs that don't land emotionally without them, or the lack of those plot/character arcs detracts from the emotional payoffs. It does NOT sound like these have been easy revisions. Also also, if you missed it, this was his recent keynote at the Cytonic launch, talking about how Cytonic was the hardest revision he's done of his career: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zNhFvEi4M0&t=360s He puts it down to the pandemic, but I think a huge factor he didn't really get into was the disjunction between what the Skyward series is (the wacky awesome adventures of Spensa) vs the reader expectations built up from Skyward itself. My guess on tomorrow's video is that this change in his process is not working for him and he's bitten off more than he can chew. I'd suspect by the way the updates are going, he's decided to push through finish Wax & Wayne because that's closer to publication, but then he needs to take a break for mental health, which means pushing back Stormlight 5—by how much, who knows, but I would guess by at least a year. He might do some work on other projects to take a breather, he might not, but he's been on record that the Stormlight books take a massive amount out of him and I believe it. Each Stormlight book is structured as a normal trilogy in five parts with a short story collection and the only way they can get it to market in 18 months is to run five publication processes in parallel. FYI my head is exploding just trying to launch one book at a time. Granted I self-publish and don't have the backing of a huge publisher like Tor and also my own team, but it's a huge undertaking. His team, especially his editors, must be stressed and burned out too, with everything they've got going on, including adding their own con on top of everything plus more leatherbound projects, etc (I think Words of Radiance was supposed to happen this year or something?).

3 Cosmere novels, I'm very excited. Emperor's Soul is amazing, and apart from Elantris, I liked all of his (till now) standalone novels. Warbreaker, Sixth of the Dusk, and Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell are all enjoyable reads. Okay, the White Sand graphic novels are a bit meh. But still, this is very cool. Slight spoilers for what Brandon said about the novels: One book is featuring a character who we have seen before but who never had their own, dedicated story. At first I thought this could mean Khriss, but she had a story in White Sand. So Nazh perhaps? Or Sarene's pirate uncle? It's not Hoid, his personal story is written and simply unreleased (and unrevised) as yet. I do hope that at least one novel is set on a shardworld apart from those we've already seen, perhaps we can learn something about Mercy or Valor or some of the other shards? That would be really cool. Anyway, I'm pumped as hell. First we'll get the finale to Mistborn Era 2, then we'll get a year full of unexpected Cosmere releases.
