the shirt that always got me the most engagement was my OG superjoint ritual shirt that i got from a roadie because i was 19 and showed up with a shirt that said in giant font RAP SUCKS. the roadie stopped me and offered me $20 and the shirt for the shirt off my back because according to him "pepper keenen would think its hilarious"

that shirt went to potentially 50+ shows until a drunk guy at Harpos just lurched out of the pit, grabbed it and just yanked as hard as he could, ripping it. i still have it and have considered framing it or something as a memento of my teenage and early 20s boozing years

How was the beer?

Pretty good overall, more dark beers this year and not just flooded with IPAs. Some good ones I can remember were the Doom Lager from Broken Goblet, Two Hundred from Adroit Theory, Hades Corpse from King's County. I also got handed a full can of the Revision metal blade collab IPA since the guy at the table liked my Grave Miasma shirt.

that legendary post about In Flames

i like to tell myself that i like In Flames, but in reality i only really like the first 18 seconds of clayman which is SO sick. it sounds like a freight train full of wizards shooting fireballs at you barreling top speed down a volcanic mountainside

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNalvo1ydJU

the rest of the song is pretty cool, but it never ever reaches the intensity of the beginning, which feels like a wasted opportunity. bullet ride is also a pretty cool high energy song, but there's not enough of that energy throughout their discography. most of the songs i've heard have WAY too much of these sleepy muted verse parts with the singer croaking into the mic like he's trying to pick up angsty goth chicks who love type o negative.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLg8YZBqu4s&t=106s
(part i mean is timestamped - ~1:50)

i could be wrong, and i haven't sat down and really dug into their entire discography, but there feels like more missed opportunities than really great songs with parts like the ones mentioned above. i'm looking for high energy, fast paced, melodic metal that packs a punch.

idk if this thread will give me poo poo for saying this, but i was able to get exactly what i wanted from In Flames plus more from this band with songs like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9dF8ArUlPs

and to quote a recent post/song that does the formula way better, and an album that is probably in my top ~15 of all time:

edit: along the same lines as the above and in response to another topic itt, i like a bunch of Entombed inspired HM-2 metal/hardcore like Gatecreeper, Creeping Death, Frozen Souls, etc. but i cannot for the life of me get through one single Entombed song so idk

it's so interesting to me when metal bands use the same movie quotes in songs. the second song on the EP you quoted uses the same sound clip as this vulvodynia song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26-E5O3SwF4

they're probably one of the more popular slam bands out there, and you'd think dudes starting a death metal band would be familiar with their material? i mean i know there's a ton of stuff to dig into in the genre and not everyone's heard everything. not that it's a negative thing at all, just interesting.

There's a lot of overlapping movie samples in death metal. If everyone was weary about using samples that were already used in other songs, nobody would use anything thanks to Mortician. Also, you have to remember that Slam (especially deathcore adjacent bands like Vulvodynia) has a completely separate fan base from the rest of the death metal scene.
