I'm in the office today (first week stuff) and it's sized for <100 people but pretty much everyone is WFH 100% so it's literally just me and my predecessor/trainer. Feels like I'm in a post apocalyptic movie or something

Yea for geology dude GIS is a shoe-in as a first opportunity. It will get paid more than helpdesk, and you have a huge leg up on junior GIS positions in that you already understand some of the field. Lots of F500 corporations have a GIS department. Or if you have a fancy to be tickled for startups, plenty of those too (I am not a fan of startup environments or compensation for junior positions.) Fire those apps away. Energy and utility companies have had absolutely ripping profits for the past few years, even when other sectors have sucked garbage, so I bet they are bursting at the (coal, nat gas) seams with open roles. Also what's the deal with hockey in Canada. There's this persistent stereotype that everyone in the country is completely rabid for the game, but every time I've met a Canadian they range from "don't watch it" to "it's fun to watch." Apparently not all Canadians can ice skate?

Starlink doesnt have coverage above 53 degrees that being said, I've also done time supporting rural satellite internet and by all accounts starlink is a significant improvement too bad about everything else

I wish there was a Starlink alternative that is run by someone who is at least less vocal about being terrible and somewhat less rapey than Musk. I really want some remote land but the only option that would let me keep working doing that would be giving him money.

Internet Explorer posted:I moved somewhere "remote" recently and I already have so many stories. At least I have 100/10 DSL, I guess. Should be getting fiber in the next couple of years. Lemme tell ya something about internet access in the rural south. I have lived here ~10 miles from a state capital for over a decade. When I first moved in 5 meg DSL was all I could get. As a month ago, the best service I can manage to get is by using two bonded ATT Firstnet sims in a cradlepoint setup with an outdoor dome antenna. RSSI is barely -80. That's good for MAYBE 10 megs down and .5 up. Comcast won't even sniff at me without 200k for construction. I've gone through every possible avenue to get something decent for years. There subdivisions being built 5 miles away with FTTP, but this middle of nowhere rear end place I've found myself in is a black hole. Starlink finally shipped this month and I'm seeing close to 100 with 30 up. So, in my situation, starlink is a loving GODSEND. Oof, that's pretty rough. Yes, I'm definitely not complaining with my 100/10 DSL. The previous owner did a lot of work to even make that possible. I recently got the Starlink RV hookup because of our internet goes down, not only do we have no backup, we have no cell service. I've already had to drive 20+ minutes bright and early to let my team know that I didn't have internet.
