LOTR is an ur-text for nerds that was widely known about in popular culture, and also the extremely high production values for it were very exciting. You don't need to work nearly as hard to sell LOTR as you do some obvious cash-grab spinoff.

All I got from that trailer is that an elf lady is "fighting." who is she fighting? why is she fighting? who even is she? Casual tv watchers who saw LOTR 20 years ago aren't going to know the name Galadriel and remember that was Cate Blanchett in the movies. Terrible ad campaign for this huge budget show.

Stacked cast, decent enough special effects (if you're not going to replicate the Harryhausen style), action looks good enough, kick rear end use of "Bird and the Worm", etc. I don't think the movie is terrible honestly, it's good Sunday afternoon on cable TV fare but that trailer set expectations way too high.
