Visuals look nice, tons of money onscreen.
No interest.

Why can't they cut a trailer that explains what's going on or why we should care? I mean, pretend it wasn't attached to a book series and was just called like "The Adventures of Steve." Would anyone be interested in this based on that trailer?

I mean aren’t all the conflicts in LOTR very rote and generic? It’s always elemental good vs evil with no nuance or realpolitik.

Yeah it looks good production wise but if there's one thing I immediately gleaned from that trailer it's "Hey I hope you're ready to try to keep track of 75 characters!" and each will probably get like 1 to 2 minutes screen time at a time.

Just the worst trailers of this show. Jesus Christ tell me what the show is about. House of Dragons had a trailer say it was about a succession crisis between a king's brother and his daughter, in Rings of Power, I'm just getting slow-mo reveals of characters that are framed in such a way that they are supposed to be meaningful but I have no idea who these characters are! Why are they giving these monologues and meaningful looks?

In fairness this is a pretty different context. LOTR is an ur-text for nerds that was widely known about in popular culture, and also the extremely high production values for it were very exciting. You don't need to work nearly as hard to sell LOTR as you do some obvious cash-grab spinoff.

This shit's about to go off.
All I got from that trailer is that an elf lady is "fighting." who is she fighting? why is she fighting? who even is she? Casual tv watchers who saw LOTR 20 years ago aren't going to know the name Galadriel and remember that was Cate Blanchett in the movies. Terrible ad campaign for this huge budget show.

That teaser is why I work in the industry. It still brings tears to my eyes.

For some reason I remember freaking out that they even put Bill the Pony in it. That's how I knew that it would deliver somehow.

I remember watching the Phantom Menace .mov trailer over and over again and thinking it was absolutely incredible. I think I kept it in a folder with all the random Star Wars lightsaber effect fan-films that I had collected from across the internet back then.

Yeah this is the gold standard. Stacked cast, decent enough special effects (if you're not going to replicate the Harryhausen style), action looks good enough, kick rear end use of "Bird and the Worm", etc. I don't think the movie is terrible honestly, it's good Sunday afternoon on cable TV fare but that trailer set expectations way too high.

I can see the quick zoom on an action figure with a "power ring" that's the size of a wristwatch for them, punching through a stack of tiny blocks.

The ring has a holo foil sticker that reveals a little fist if you get it warm.
