Extraordinary Attorney Woo on Netflix is a light romantic comedy series from Korea about a brilliant first year attorney with Autism. I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's the Korean iteration of the various versions of Good Doctor around the world.

The show seems shot in consideration of people with sensory challenges: from sound to cinematography, it's maybe the softest show I've experienced since Teletubbies. The cases are at a Phoenix Wright level of stakes, but the emotional beats can be heartbreaking.

I’ve asked around for autistic peoples’ opinions on autism representation on the show and it seems split. I think it’s very good in trying to get people to care about autistic people and show them in a positive light but it’s good to be aware that some of it is still inaccurate and clumsy.

It’s on the relatively edgy and progressive carrier in Korea which is why they also portray gays in a positive light

Korea had a lot of shame about neurodivergence and parents would try to hide it and not get their kids any help out of denial, so for whatever the show gets wrong it’s a one step backwards several steps forward sort of thing

And yeah the emotional beats are good, the lawyer stuff seems very little league

Samaritan is okay.

This is about my opinion as well. A superhero cross between Unforgiven and Robocop (they even tip their hat by having a Robocop arcade cabinet in the film), but not nearly as interesting as that sounds.

And it does the thing that really shits me off and has an exposition voiceover at the start of the film, stating information you get later in the film anyway. Just reeks of studios lacking confidence in audiences picking up basic information. At least I hope it was studio notes, I hate to think someone wrote the film that way.

And this time is especially egregious as it makes something obvious to even the most inattentive viewer that probably should have been more a surprise (ending spoilers) that Sly is actually the villain Nemesis, not the hero Samaritan

Or maybe I've seen too many movies to know that 1 minute in, but I think every viewer will be picking up on it.

The kid actor in Samaritan is dogshit. Gave me huge kid from Kazaam energy. I thought the movie was super boring in a "this is just bad" way.
It's also super iffy on its politics, the bad guy is basically Bane except the antifa are the people ruining the city and we need the cops and a hero to help our cops. There were some okay scenes but definitely skip it, it's like a 3/10.

Nah, the opening ADR'd voiceover spoils the twist 3 seconds into the movie like you said.

lol

I watched The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone (aka the recut of Godfather III) (Paramount+, although it’s leaving soon) the other day. I knew absolutely nothing about the movie other than it involved the pope somehow and people don’t like it.

It wasn’t horrible, but the biggest problem is that it’s utterly unnecessary. Coppola thought so too and only agreed to make it because of financial issues. I had no idea Sofia Coppola was in it and boy is she not good, but apparently she was a last-minute replacement because Winona Ryder got sick and Sofia had no real goals of being an actor.

At times this movie feels like a parody of The Godfather series. I had no idea “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” was from this movie.

If you’re like I was and have completely avoided this movie due to its reputation, I really can’t say you should bother. However, if you feel like watching a mafia movie and you’ve already seen all the big ones, you could do worse I guess.

yea it seems imperfect in some ways neurodivergent people are very fair to say 'eh this isn't really representative' but it seems like by virtue of being on the 'edgy' Korean carrier it's one of the few major outlets giving any kind of 'look if your kid is like this you shouldn't treat it like some horrible problem, they're still just like anyone else' and sadly that's a message that's pretty rare.

I saw it for the first time this year, too. Definitely not as bad as its rep, but not in the same league as the first two, of course. The movie really suffers without the presence of Duvall (why wouldn't they just pay him what he deserved??), but Pacino, Garcia, and Keaton are really good. There are a couple killer scenes, like the helicopter hit, even if it feels more 80s action movie than Godfather , but the incest stuff is odd, unnecessary, and only made worse by Sofia Coppola's amateurish acting. I still dug it, though.

I don't think Sandman is as good as some people think it is, but I would also suggest starting with episode 6 if you're interested but not invested. Episodes 1-5 cover an initial prelude to the series (both in show and comic). I never got much past the comics covered in this first season, but nothing about the back half really relies on facts from the first half except for the fact that (1) Dream has an almost indomitable will, and (2) even for an immortal, he is astonishingly slow to forgive.

If you watched long enough to understand the general consequences of the sleeping sickness from episode one, you basically have everything you need to get the first season, but there are definitely seeds planted for the second season in those first episodes you might want to go back for at some point.

(Godfather III)
The first spoiler is utterly ridiculous if you actually think about it: a helicopter shooting up a casino in Las Vegas would be national front page news (probably even international). It’s not like there’s that many helicopters around either; I think the FBI would be able to crack that case fairly easily. The assassin in the opera was pretty ridiculous too; are we supposed to think that he got so flustered not getting a shot off that he basically decided to throw caution to the wind and commit Suicide By Goon at the end?

There's some weird memory hole that a bunch of people who watched Game of Thrones gave themselves where they forget the first 1-3 episodes of every single season of GoT, including the ones people like(d), are almost entirely all expesitionary setup for the rest of the season. Just a ton of walking around in rooms discussing what's gonna happen in the rest of the season. I remember when S2 came out and people were talking about quitting the show after 2 episodes because "I waited so long and this boring poo poo is what the show comes back to."

For me it's not so much that I forgot about that, it's just that I think I might be permanently burned out on it. Indian matchmaker season 2 was so loving bad. It immediately falls into all the worst habits of bad reality tv: cast members who are just there to grow their brand, obviously contrived social settings and scenes, braindead superficial "conversations" ("do you like tattoos? No I don't like tattoos. Do you like skydiving? No I don't like skydiving." I'm on the edge of my seat), wildly meandering scope so the show just turns into some generic lifestyles of the rich and [Indian in this case].

I feel like Netflix's reality programming is going more and more in this direction where it's indistinguishable from any random Bravo show or whatever

This story was written before the final season of Game of Thrones. It is covered in two published books, and touched on in the main GoT books. The story is complete. Rhaenyra's story is different enough from Dany's to warrant a whole show about it. Anyone looking for a story redeeming what happened to Dany will be disappointed.
