it's much better when a character is cringe because they're cringe and not because the author is bad at writing and/or has a terrible sense of humor. macronomicon kind of does lovely dialogue in that everyone sounds really similar but he's actually funny so it's not a problem

TUTBAD somehow manages to make the sort of "adorkable" interactions that annoy/irritate me in most other stories good. I think it's mainly because the characters have clear voices and aren't obviously just "the writer speaking through their characters."
I think some of it's just brevity. Dwelling on cringe interactions makes them so much harder to read than, "yep they're dorks, let's keep it moving." A lot of web serials just blather on forever, TUTBAD mostly doesn't, despite being slice of life.

For the opposite of brevity: look at how on the nose He Who Fights With Monsters is with Jason's sense of humor, just constantly bringing it up and spending time on people talking about it or reacting to it or duplicating it.

So the Lord Magistrate had been mollified, and he thought, prepared for any “delicate diplomatic incident” that the young man could bring.

Naturally, the heavens had seen his hubris, and designed to punish him for it.

Ar'Kendrithyst Patreon: I like how at the end of the chapter that unknown to Erick, people are working on taking down all the plots against him, to the point where 6 people out of a 10 person group are spying for Erick. Like some gangster meeting where everyone involved is from different federal agencies.

Also that Melemizargo is one of those spying for Erick, lol

Yeah it's awesome. He gets a chuckle out of me almost every chapter. He's gotten much funnier over the years but the inherently ridiculous setting helps it out.

How did "Wake of the Ravager" end? I dropped it after it seemed like they'd be in the weird desert-trope area forever, specifically after they got stuck in the other dimension.

it hasn't, it's just on hiatus

Dunno if others are like me, but I will usually not read a story unless I either trust the author or the story has at least 40ish updates. People usually go through their first arc by that point so you can see if you only had one good idea, or at least there is a decent amount of content.

Macro came back, dropped like 30 chapters to get to the end of a book/arc, then went back on hiatus but they plan to pick it up again in the future.

TUTBAD 134 posted:

“No,” said Alfric. “Imagine that you’re her, and that you’re responsible for disappearing somewhere between three dozen and two hundred people, maybe even more. You’ve been doing this entirely in secret for a number of months, being careful to evade a cursory pastwatch, manipulating memories so that no one can tell on you, all that other kind of thing. If someone comes to you with questions, what do you do?”

“Kill them,” said Isra.

“Flee,” said Verity.

“Seems extreme,” said Mizuki. “Cate seemed nice, even if she was a little insistent. She could easily have stolen the dragons, if she was malicious.”

“You deny everything,” said Hannah.

I'm starting to think that the Industrial Strength Magic guy has some sort of weird complex/fetish involving parents being sexual. At first I overlooked it, but then it comes up in nearly every appearance of the protagonist's parents (and even during the first time his grandparents show up together!).
