AFewBricksShy posted:Cabin in the woods is the first one to come to mind, but hasn't the "Sacrifice to prevent the end of the world" been relatively common in horror lately? I mean no that's not a unique trope at all. Cabin in the Woods is amazing, but definitely more of a jokey (and very literal) take on it. This is more personal and contemplative and insecure. It's not showy at all. It feels more in line with The Mist than anything else. Just sort of a personal POV of people trapped in an unimaginable scenario. edit: at least the book is. No idea what the adaptation is like. BonoMan fucked around with this message at 17:24 on Sep 22, 2022 |

BonoMan posted:Yesssssss! This is based on the book "The Cabin at the End of the World" and I loving loved it. It was one of those books that got the rights purchased but I just assumed would never get made. I really enjoyed A Head Full of Ghosts so I’m tempted to pick this up before February but I’m torn on waiting for the movie so I can go in blind because I love M Night too!

Parkingtigers posted:Prince of Darkness was creepy AF even watching it on VHS with a friend. I was only sad that there's a transition from night to daybreak right at the peak which really breaks the tension. If the storyline had played out before sunrise hits I'd have been creeped out until the end but even as a kid I wondered why JC made such a baffling choice that whiffs the ending. You need to watch it again. The last scene of Prince of Darkness is one of the greatest tension moments I've ever seen.

Ooh, it's good to see Khondji really flex again. He's done a lot of gorgeous understated stuff in the last few decades, but I loved when he was going all out with visual flourish in the 90s. And I'm always down for Inarritu.

I AM GRANDO posted:Truly sublime. There are maybe five wonderful ideas in that movie that could each be their own movie. It’s an extremely creative film, especially given the limitation in sets and location. I know I'm late to PoD talk, but... I saw that movie my freshman year in college when it came out. I left the theater with my mind blown. Like you say, it left me (in a good way) with more questions about that movie's world than were shown on screen. I mean turns out there's the underlying realty to the Catholic religion that only a select and limited brotherhood know about. Like it's a mix between Gnosticism and Zaorastrianism. God and Anti-God? Who the gently caress is being referred to "Your god Proteus cannot protect you"?<---(that's where I snagged my ID) There's an almost technological, nanomachine vibe going on with Satan. Plus, Pleasence and Wong in the same movie? Sign me up. Its definitely my favorite horror movie, and is generally near the top of my list of fav movies in general. Carpenter is just so good at making a movie with a rich and deep story with so little budget. Proteus Jones fucked around with this message at 02:23 on Sep 25, 2022 |

It looks good, but making a TV series out of The Last of Us kind of feels kind of superfluous. At best, I think it's nice for people who have no familiarity with the game and no intention to play it?

My understanding is that it's going to have a bunch of storylines with new characters from stories they wanted to tell while making the first game. I've followed the filming and it's certainly faithful to the first game start-to-end but they want to branch a lot more of it out. The outbreak also happens in the show in 2003 instead of 2013 which I think is an interesting decision from a set design perspective. Maybe there's more to that as well.

Neil Druckman was part of the writers' room and the showrunner from Chornobyl is a fitting match, so I have high expectations from the show. I like TLOU's story enough that I'm glad to see it get adapted to a genre that tends to age better and reaches a wider audience than games. It will also be nice to see the narrative restructured in a medium that doesn't require a combat sequence every 15 minutes. Also, Naughty Dog's animators and tech artists are second to none, but actual photography still lands emotion harder than realistic CG.

I don't really mean that live-action is better or more emotive than animation, but rather that it's better than animation attempting to look photoreal. At least for now, it's still in the uncanny valley and that creates a bit of emotional distance for me, as the audience. Heightened or stylized animation is a different story.
